Maria - The Vulcanoes (Patreon)

An unserem letzten gemeinsamen Tag auf Lanzarote im Dezember konnte ich Maria mitten in diesem gigantischen, sich bis zum Horizont erstreckenden Lavafeld fotografieren. Das Außergewöhnliche an dieser Landschaft ist, dass sie erst vor knapp 300 Jahren – nämlich zwischen 1730 und 1736 – entstanden ist. Die verheerenden, jahrelang andauernden Vulkanausbrüche wurden damals von einem auf Lanzarote lebenden Pfarrer in Tagebuchform dokumentiert - denn zuvor war dieses Gebiet bewohntes und fruchtbares Ackerland.

On our last day together on Lanzarote in December, I was able to photograph Maria standing in the middle of this gigantic lava field that stretches all the way to the horizon. What’s remarkable about this landscape is that it only formed about 300 years ago, between 1730 and 1736. The devastating volcanic eruptions lasted for years and were documented in diary form by a priest who lived on Lanzarote at the time. Before that, all of this was inhabited and fertile farmland.
