A while ago I was asked about what my planning process is like, and all I could give you was a blurred out screen shot of my spreadsheet for Breaking Legacies. I thought now would be a cool time to let you all in on the process by showing you my spreadsheet for the Nira and Rhien arc I'll be starting whenever it gets voted in the monthly prompts. Their story will be called Facing Legacies.

Download the full excel file attached in this post!

Keep in mind that I use these files more as guidelines than as strict skeletons to throw meat on. Sometimes I add chapters, sometimes I combine them, sometimes I cut things out completely and change direction because characters don't always react the way I expect them to. Facing Legacies will all be from Nira's POV, but usually when I use multiple POVs I color code rows based on whose chapter it is.

In case you don't have Excel, I've attached it as 2 png files labeled Part 1 and Part 2. Remember, this is THE SPOILER, so if you don't want to know what'll happen then don't look xD

Could we see someday one of your plans with the POV option? It would be cool to learn

Ivaylo Zhelev

I kind of hope that you'll find a way to marry them and that it feels natural xD Of course they don't have to be, but it's the best feeling when they get everything they want. Also, hi :] Haven't finished Breaking Legacies (halfway-ish through), but I'll say this. You monster.

Z.R. Reed

Hello! :) It is the best feeling when characters get everything they want. Like you said tho, I'll have to see what feels natural as I write Nira and Rhien's story. I guess we'll find out! Lol uh oh O.O hopefully you're still enjoying it tho!

Ivaylo Zhelev

I have, yes. Just finished it actually. I absolutely loved it. Didn't like their 'suffering' (I never do) but they have their happy ending. I kind of hope that Rhien and Nira won't be subjected to the same amount of stuff happening to make them miserable, but I'll read it anyway. Didn't read through the whole plan. Just the final chapters and a bit at the beginning to see how much later the story will be since the first. All in all, thank you for the story :]

Z.R. Reed

Aw good! :D. Suffering is never fun (unless you're a masochist like me, I guess haha), but stories wouldn't be interesting if nothing bad ever happened :P. Nooo Nira and Rhien won't suffer even a fraction as much as Ava and Kiena did, I promise. And you're very welcome for the story! Thanks for letting me know how much you liked it. And for supporting me on here :)

Ivaylo Zhelev

Hmm, I kinda disagree on the story not being interesting if nothing bad ever happened, but it all depends on how it would be in the narrative (though, every time someone said that phrase or something similar to it, there was a very graphic torture/rape/something in that vein chapter(s) before/after that statement). For instance, in Breaking Legacies I could see that the 'bad' was far more likely to be present than in say, Interference. Still, the fight they had in Interference didn't feel as natural as the bad things that happened in Breaking Legacies. I mean, I understood that Taylor would get a bit angry and frustrated at Jordan for forcing herself, but when I read the little bits from Taylor's POV it felt somehow wrong for that fight to happen, and after Nicole visited Taylor for her not to go immediately to Jordan. I don't know. I guess whenever I can get the next tier(s) I'll try to ask it as a prompt xD Still one of my favorite books, it's just that tiny little 'had to happen/when it rains it pours' moment that slightly irked me :] Wow, this was a rant. Sorry xD

CyclopsSlayer

Just finished Breaking Legacies, enjoyed it as much as the rest of your books. Eagerly awaiting the next

Z.R. Reed

Haha it's okay, rants are acceptable. And I definitely understand what you're saying. I think sometimes authors do use that phrase to justify graphic badness, and as a young-ish writer myself, I'm still learning how much pain is necessary for plot. (Like rape, for example, which Hollywood taught me was a good plot accessory, but that I've since learned is an awful/harmful way to advance the plot and will thus not be putting it in stories pretty much ever again.) I guess by 'if nothing bad ever happened', I meant more along the lines of 'if there was never conflict', which like you said, would depend on the narrative. You're absolutely allowed to feel irked about how the events went down in Interference, and in no way do I want you to feel obligated to change your mind. I would like to offer my perspective though, and say that you're right about it being Taylor's personality to go to Jordan immediately after Nicole's visit to talk things out, but while she's infinitely patient with Jordan, she did struggle with anger issues. That being said, I think Taylor likes to go into situations she knows will be upsetting having completely processed that situation, that way she has her emotions under control. For example, she struggles with not reacting to Nicole during the game even after she’s had time to calm down, and she STILL gets into a fight (even though Nicole arguably deserved it…). Also keep in mind that the fight scene from Taylor’s POV happens after she and Jordan have talked it out, so any doubts and insecurities Taylor may have had between her fight with Jordan and her fight with Nicole are no longer present. It may seem like she’s mastered controlling her anger, and in a lot of ways she has, but she’s not perfect and the last thing she’d ever want to do is react to Jordan with anger. So I’d say that Taylor was planning on going to Jordan immediately, once she felt ready. But! That’s my perspective, and I do believe that things not directly stated in the book are open to the interpretation of the reader, so you are completely free to disagree. All in all, I appreciate the open discussion :). It’ll be an interesting one shot to write if you ever request it! And that was a BRICK of text, lol, sorry!

Thank you, William! I'm so happy you enjoyed it! And thanks for your support on Patreon :D

'If there was never conflict' makes more sense. (Now I'm nitpicking, so bear with me xD) If the conflict was less about how the two characters' relationship is ruined and more struggling with someone that wants to ruin it (breaking up/making them doubt their partner) I'd be more for it, but as it is, the vast majority of authors go right for the two characters' relationship and break them up. (There are a few authors that just love to break them up 70-5%-ish percent in the book, just because 'something has to happen') What I'm trying to say (xD) is that I wouldn't be so paranoid when reading a book if the authors didn't go for that particular thing that they are so fond of. Again, if there is a legitimate reason for them to break up, okay, but when all book they say to each other they trust the other without a doubt, and then the inner thoughts reflect what they say, and next chapter or two, they break up, that's just bad. Now the above thing doesn't reflect about Interference and Taylor, (okay, maybe just slightly, but not to that ridiculous degree) it was just a little abrupt to see Taylor lose her patience. Yes, I know she has said that she has had anger issues, but the thing is we haven't seen her struggle (not that I want to). So while I somewhat understand, all throughout the book we see her calm and mischievous and all around fun and then that happens. Ugh, I'm sounding like I'm hating it or something and just paraphrasing stuff xD I know that the fight scene happens after, and that's a nice glimpse into the past (I also love protective/possessive stances. Of course when they're appropriate and not just jealousy because someone looked at her funny or something), so yeah, I was more talking about wanting to see Taylor's POV during the falling out with Jordan. Which would probably be my request whenever it comes. I'm still a little sad I missed the voting for the prompt for us to see Ava as a wisp though xD Hopefully you'll bring it back sometime and not have it fight with favorites xD Also just finished In Spirit and Truth. You like to be mean don't you :P I got scared for a second there near the end where it seemed like he was about to rape her, but I guess he didn't? It's a little unclear since she blacked out and then woke up with everything hurting and a little of her observation made me think that he did rape her when he was unconscious. I don't know, if you could say for sure whether or not he did, I'd be thankful (still thinking he didn't, but if I don't know for sure, it'll keep gnawing at me). That ending as well was really mean. You say you're a masochist, but I think you're more of a sadist :P Make me have to read the second part. At least you won't break them up again when they get back together some time during it. Right? Right?! Anyway, don't worry about the wall of text. I once wrote a review on FFN that I couldn't fit in xD So yeah. I'm good if you're good.

Z.R. Reed

Ah! I see your point! And yeah I think seeing the fallout of the fight with Jordan from Taylor's POV would definitely help clear the air with some things, and show more why she reacted the way she did. It's definitely a good idea :). I will bring the prompt with Ava as the wisp back at some point! So you'll have the opportunity to vote for it again. Sooooo yeah he did rape her (like I said, awful/harmful not too happy with younger me [I was like 17/18 when I wrote those books], but it happened so now she's dealing with it and it'll be mostly resolved in the 3rd book which I'm writing now). And you're totally gonna hate me when you read Phantoms, so just go into it knowing that you're gonna be really frustrated with Camille and Kyla... cuz they get back together eventually, but it takes forever and it's classic 'misunderstanding that could've been solved with one conversation'. If it helps, just remember they're dumb teenagers and when do most teenagers ever solve conflicts the mature way? At least in fiction, anyway... Live and learn, you know? haha.

Ivaylo Zhelev

Glad to hear it :] And now you're making me want to wait till the third book comes out xD Just so I can lessen the frustration (that particular trope is my least favorite, after the 'why not rape' her one). I would understand why teenagers behave that way if when I was a teenager (which wasn't that long ago mind you) and my friends who were also teenagers they behaved like they are described in most YA books. That's why I mostly avoid reading them, cause I/my friends behaved like that when we were 12-15 so to me, they're not 17-19. I don't know xD Still, thanks for the warning. Guess I'll (probably) wait for the third one. There gonna be a fourth? Don't answer that if you don't want to :]

Z.R. Reed

Lol no hard feelings if you wait til the third book comes out. I'm hoping to finish it soon so it won't be long till I start posting chps on Patreon. The plots are stand alone, so you won't miss anything super major, and what important details you do miss should be sufficiently recapped in the 3rd. And there will be a fourth! And a fifth. I have big plans for these characters so long as the readers don't lose interest haha.

Ivaylo Zhelev

So I was right. You're definitely a sadist :] The poor characters xD Hope you don't torture them from the third on out as much :] Thanks for the talk. It was refreshing (:

Z.R. Reed

Maybe a little :P. Lol I make no promises! But I do promise to try and continue improving on keeping the torture to a plot and/or character development necessary basis. Thank you for being so nice and open! I look forward to chatting with you in the future :)
