I'm copying this comment from another person, but this explains better why Levi was inspired to follow Erwin despite what happened here: (this is from the manga) So after the fake document reveal, Levi accuses that his friends died for Erwin’s "worthless schemes". Erwin: “Worthless schemes? Who was it who killed my subordinates? Killed your friends? Was it me? Or was it you?” [Levi starts to blame himself here.] Erwin: "You’re wrong! It’s the titans! Where did they come from? Why do they exist? Why do they kill humans? I don’t have the answers. None of us do. Limited by our ignorance, we’ll continue to be devoured by the titans! If we just stay shut behind the walls, we are never going to escape this nightmare. Take a good look around you! No matter how far you go, there aren’t any walls here. In this open space, I believe there is something there, illuminating our despair. But there are those who seek to prevent us from venturing beyond the walls. They are consumed by selfish thoughts of their own losses and gains from behind the walls where they are safe! It’s only natural. During the past 100 years, hindered by the walls, the eyes of humanity have been clouded. They cannot see the landscape that lies on the other side. But what about you, Levi? This is just pure speculation on my part, since nothing in the canon material that I know of has ever hinted this or anything. We now knew that a group of noble clans are resistant to the Founding Titan's memory control. So I suspected Erwin's family might have shared some noble blood from one of those clans, which is why he and his dad have such strong sense of free will unlike most people inside the wall.
