Or, Portrait of a Twink on Fire. Or, Call Me By Your Flame.
We're joined by Angie (@st00perduck) to talk about Hiroyuki Imaishi's (Gurren Lagann, Panty and Stocking) first feature film from Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners), the balls-to-the-walls and (coincidentally) politically charged anime spectacle Promare. Scratching the surface of bright colors, breakneck animation, and assorted anime bullshit reveals a movie with some shockingly cogent stuff to say about institutionalized oppression, environmental destruction, and our own complicity in power structures with genocidal ambitions (no, really!). If all this sounds incredibly topical, well, it is, even if Imaishi and company were just trying to make the anime equivalent of a Fast & Furious movie.
Plus, we answer perhaps the most "burning" question of them all: is it gay to kiss your homie on the mouth to give him life saving CPR before you go fix global warming by punching the planet in your gay sex mecha?
