Selected by Patreon supporter Doctor Ironic, the crew takes a look at the 2000s cult bomb that sent writer/director Richard Kelly to director's jail: Southland Tales. Starring The Rock, Stiffler, Buffy and most of SNL it's a wildly amibitious, dense, messy, weird, chaotic and otherwise numerously adjectival satire(?) of Bush era America, California culture, the war on terror and consumerism. And Marxism. And the end of the world, the book of revelation, TS Eliot, reality TV, zeppelins, teen horniness...
It's a lot. It's a bit of a mess. But maybe that's what we like about it? Dive in headfirst as we explore this maligned and misunderstood film and celebrate the inherent value of creative ambition and big swings, even when they don't always connect. Press play and inject 2005 directly into your pineal gland.
NOTE: In this case you might want to consider watching this movie before listening to the episode. For reference, we watched the recently released 'Cannes Cut', but the theatrical should also suffice.
