Fan-favorite guest, discord mod and official Star Trek correspondent Seqarts joins Stu and Cole to talk about 1979's 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', the underrated and spectacular first film entry that revived the once-cult 1960s TV show and turned it into a generation-spanning franchise. In this follow up to our episode on the 2009 JJ Abrams reboot, we discuss how to do revivals and 'legacy sequels' right, this movies unique place in history, the tug and pull of the influences of 2001 and Star Wars on hollywood SciFi, follow up on the question of 'what is (good) Science Fiction', ponder 1970s future-fashions, very long shots of cool models, the work of Douglas Trumbull, and consider the design and themes of V'ger - one of the coolest things ever put on screen.

This is a spoiler-heavy episode of a movie we're quite positive about, so we strongly advise you consider watching it before listening. For this episode, we're discussing the 2000 "Director's Edition" cut, remastered for 4K in 2022.

TOS, TNG & DS9 are peak, Voyager is mid, Enterprise is decent until it goes full 9/11 and then Nu-Trek is at worst not even Trek and at best is low tier slop. TOS had the best movies, TNG movies suck and JJ Abrams movies are slop. The Orville is better than all Nu-Trek

Whoever said that the odd numbered movies suck and the even ones were good is evil. I put off watching this movie for so long because of that and I’m watching it right now and this is awesome. also holy shit McCoy really does look like he was at the disco
