I think I might be dumb, but why is it a big deal that he showed him “Al” in the flesh, especially if he’s admitting that he altered the memory? Is it just that Malthus is like “HAH I did alter the memory and there’s proof”? I get that Ethan’s about to find out they’re Stryder and Lafayette, but… idk I feel like this is a “gotcha” page and I’m too slow to understand the gotcha lol

i get the feeling that malthus is under the impression that revealing who they are and what happened to them is going to break ethan, except i'm pretty sure that finding out malthus was behind the attack all that time ago, and that he's responsible for how traumatized al is, is only going to make ethan want to kill him more, and thus completely backfire.

I still think this will backfire, man. Ethan’s gonna put two and two together and realize who killed all those people during the last academy attack. Plus . . .what exactly is the advantage Malthus thinks he’s going to get? Nobody is as jealous as your stupid butt, Malthus. Does he think Ethan’s going to be like, “Hey! He was supposed to only have one exorcist! Me!” Does he think Ethan’s going to think he’s just a replacement? Maybe that’s why he’s showing him this? I feel this is only going to make Ethan in touch with his inner Adrian, which we’ve seen during the chapter when Ethan was drunk and in a few others, whenever he lights up both eyes.

Actually I'm kinda with you on that. I think, however, he might somehow be twisting the significance of Al being captured by his 'past life', and that Al doesn't truly love ETHAN, he only loves Ethan because of who he used to be. I think that's what Malthus might be aiming for soon.
