The Inedible Mattman!

Doctor Who, the only show I've ever seen that consistently breaks my heart, then makes me laugh, then makes me go "Wait, WTF???" ... I love these kinds of cliffhangers and story endings. So dramatic, so bizarre, and this is why this show sits on top of my list of favorite shows. :) So glad you made it here! I remember watching this episode for the first time when it originally aired, and I was a sobbing mess for weeks. Great reaction, and thank you for continuing down this amazing show!! Keep up the great work!

Oh man, I always lose it in this episode. It's so heartbreaking. We get all these crumbs through the season that kind of hint at this final dynamic. When they're stranded on the Bitter Pill base gravitating the black hole, Rose suggests that it's not too bad since at least they're stranded together- she even says they can get a house together. But the Doctor kind of lets that pass without agreeing and is too devastated about getting her stuck. In Fear Her, Rose says that they'll always be together no matter what but the doctor kind of leaves her on read and seems distracted about a vague sense of danger. Even all the way back in School Reunion, we got a snapshot preview of the end with Sarah Jane's story. From what we've seen in the show so far, when danger is upon them, the companion would rather die than leave the Doctor but the Doctor would rather leave the companion than watch them die. It's extra painful because I understand both perspectives but it also means that the Doctor had to be the one to abandon them or push them away (Rose in both finales and SJ). The sobbing against the wall scene is probably the saddest of the show so far for me. I could watch that scene out of context and weep. Billie Piper's acting is excellent in this finale, just like the last one. Christmas episode time! I think you can probably guess the tone from that teaser. We could all use some silliness after that traumatic goodbye.

What no one ever picks up is at the end where they show the void being closed right after Pete saves Rose...you can hear "See you in hell" as the void closes for good. It was Satan...he was right! You can hear Satan at 38:08 minutes into the video ..what's cool is that it is EXACTLY what Rose told Satan when she blew out the window in the Rocket that sent him into the black hole.

Since it's a devastating episode, I'll leave you with a fun fact. When Jake says "there's always the lift [elevator]" this was added in because originally they were going to fly up in a spaceship, but they spent all the VFX budget on the Satan monster from the satan pit. Since they'd already filmed this episode (yes these were not actually Rose's final scene's filmed) they brought the actor who plays Jake back for reshoots, and added in that scene. Love and Monsters was actually the last episode filmed, with the Satan Pit being right before it. If I remember correctly, I think the Satan Pit was officially Rose's/Billie's final scenes.

Such a banger of a 2-parter, although it's not even the best finale IMO.
