Hey Emme. Glad you enjoyed this episode. One thing you said, that I think I disagree with is that I actually think it was a lot easier for Rose to run off. While she was away, she hardly thought of her mother and Mickey. She even said to Mickey that there is absolutely nothing here for her, including her mother. Whereas Martha’s family may have some drama at the moment (because her father and mother recently broke up), but they are a very close family. Plus Martha still wants to become a doctor. Can’t wait until you’ll see more as we go on. I think Martha is a wonderful breath of fresh air. She’s really intelligent, kind, full of energy, asks the right questions and jumps right in to help and she’s gorgeous. One of the best! Don’t know if you noticed, but all of the actors in the play are all men. Women weren’t able to be on the stage, so if there was a female part, it would be played by a man dressed as a women. Even Shakespeare is wearing eyeliner.

the audio for the episode cut out after about a minute on this full length and only returns every now and again x/

“Just walk about like you own the place, works for me” said as a (passing) white man to a black woman when she expresses concern about being hundreds of years in the racist past (in the British empire at the start of the transatlantic slave trade no less) is WILD. It’s just a blaring bit of poor writing and makes the doctor look so unbelievably ignorant. As if external self-confidence can cloak you against racial violence. Many seasons from now, they kind of stage a redo by mirroring this interaction but between different characters in a different situation and they do much better. I see it kind of like an implied acknowledgment of this TERRIBLE doctor piece of dialogue and a wish to atone. I really do like Martha a lot. She’s the inverse to Rose in a lot of ways. Rose was uneducated, grew up in poverty, didn’t have much family except for the strained relationship with her mother, had low self-esteem, and was very young (19). She had a great journey of self-discovery and coming to understand how much she was truly capable of. Martha is very educated, extremely intelligent, seemingly grew up with some money (Tish mentioned the step-mom “spending their inheritance”), has a larger tight-knit family, is very confident, and is young but older than Rose (probably mid-20s). She’ll have her own journey as all characters do but I’ll let you identify that as it develops. What they have in common that we’ve seen is that they’re both kind, brave, adaptable, and curious. I kind of love that they jumped to such different people. ***classic who spoiler alert for one paragraph*** In classic who, the doctor’s companions included (but were not limited to) a whip-smart investigative journalist (Sarah Jane Smith), a “savage” female warrior, an Aussie flight attendant, an angsty teen boy genius, two high school teachers, a grunge teen girl with a fondness for homemade explosives, and a gay highlander (okay, gay-coded). The doctor picked up companions from all over time, across different planets, from all walks of life. Admittedly, racial diversity in 60s-80s British television wasn’t quite there. But I think there’s a legacy of different companions that show you don’t have to be any one thing to be the doctor’s companion that we see in the flip from Rose to Martha. And I also think that’s important to show young audiences who idolize the doctor. ***end of classic who spoilers*** Aside from all that, the doctor’s kind of a jerk to Martha in this episode in general and sort of has a bad attitude. As hard as it is to watch because I love Martha, I do appreciate it as a new element to the doctor’s character journey. This is the first time we’re seeing him after losing a companion. He’s not in a good place right now which makes sense because he’s still deep in grief. We don’t always act like our best selves in the days following a breakup or a loss. To the doctor, who’s lost all his family and everyone he’s ever known (his whole planet and species was destroyed!), Rose was his best friend, his family, and his platonic life partner. She was the greatest object of his protection and also the only one who took care of him even when he denied the need. So I do appreciate that when there’s the loss of this first (of new who) companion, we see the doctor unhinge a bit. You know, be a jerk to Martha and flush spider monster babies and stuff. Not a lot of fans consider this to be a very good episode but idk, I find many parts of it charming. It’s peak sci-fi fantasy camp with complete indulgence in the time travel element. The JK Rowling stuff didn’t exactly age well but what can you do. I’m glad you seemed to enjoy it like me!

I actually like when there's no show audio in your full videos (or only brief bits for syncing). I much prefer the ability to choose my audio levels. I tend to turn down reactors slightly during quiet, dialogue heavy scenes so that I can still fully hear the show but I turn reactors very high during louder action sequences because I want to be able to hear them and don't mind if they fully eclipse anything going on in the show. Just one girl's opinion!

Love your Doctor Who reactions Emme! May I ask what do you watch Doctor Who on?

Thank you for letting me know Emme, unfortunately being in the UK I can't get HBO to sync up my copy.

I think people have said if you change the playback of my video to 96% or mess around with it it may work!

I don't want to be rude; but it is this type of insistence that we always look at everything through a certain lens, and cannot just have fun with it that spoiled this community for me and made me no longer willing to pay to be part of it. I love Emme's reactions, but she has drawn in an extremely toxic group of people.

Katie Niekamp

You may not want to be rude, and perhaps tone is difficult to portray through text, but I think some of your accusations were a little bit unfair. Giving my thoughts on an episode in a comments section isn't the same as "insisting that we always look at everything through a certain lens." My favorite part of the doctor who community is having dialogues about episodes and hearing a variety of opinions on what people like and don't like. I honestly I have no clue which part of my comment you're talking about. If you're going to call someone toxic, it's only fair to be specific or else all I hear is an insult, not a good faith attempt at meta discourse. If any part of my comment made it seem like I think viewers "cannot have fun with it," I promise you that I would never urge people to not enjoy the show. I'm a huge fan, conventions and all.
