The doctor is a true ride or die for his companions. We've seen 11 be overemotional but that swings both ways. I don't think 9 or 10 would have as easily followed Amy into that car unless it was their own opinion she would survive. She basically said, "this might be suicide or it might be salvation but either way, I just can't live in a world without the man I love." 11 looked into her teary eyes and was like "okay, let's crash and see what happens." He was just immediately on board with the emotional argument and willing to kamikaze with his best friend. Say what you will about how insane that is, but I think that's what latched me onto the show in the first place. He was the doctor of that time. I was 20 and struggling with a lot of big emotions myself, not to mention being out in the real adult world for the first time. The eleventh doctor just has this "let's jump" energy about him. Willing to commit to every moment and every question with reckless abandon. Wresting with the darkness and serious matters while trying to hold onto a childlike whimsy (you know, like my college kid self). Coping with overwhelming emotions. Silliness and innocence and sentimentality hold a lot of value in this era, just look at the Wonka-esque TARDIS design, and I needed to believe in those things during a natural period of disillusionment. In fact, I kept a framed fan art piece in a picture frame above my desk for a long time as a visual reminder. Of course, every doctor is willing to put it all on the line, especially their life. But there's something extra about 11 in this 5th season... like he's willing to put his whole heart and soul into it too. Matt Smith's physicality lends this manic energy that really sells it in my opinion. I'm in my 30s now so I don't quite relate to the character in the same way. He's not my favorite doctor anymore (though I still love him with all my heart!!). I'm afraid I gravitate a bit more to the cynical incarnations. But I don't know, maybe I've come full circle. Maybe the world is just dark enough now that what I need is the bow-tie wearing Doctor that's always shouting and skipping and spinning and flying the ketchup and mustard Tardis. The let's hold hands and crash for love doctor. Hm.

Amy's "then what is the point of you?" is actually exactly what Gwen says to Jack in season 1 of Torchwood when Rhys dies and he can't do anything about it, always been interested if this was intentional or not And CANNOT BELIEVE the amount of times I've watched this episode and not realized that the Dream Lord suddenly appearing in a robe and saying "anything could happen" when alone with Amy is a callback to Jackie in the very first episode of New Who 😂

Omg i totally forgot that callback to torchwood!!

Aw thank you so much for sharing your insight & how you related and interpreted this moment when you first saw it. Thats really special!!! I think there was so much going on i didnt mention it while watching but that part certainly stuck out to me too as memorable.

Episode 10-14 of this series is one of the best runs of consecutive bangers of the whole show. Strap in!

i adore this episode, watching this back knowing which is real, listening to everything the dream lord says its so perfect, its, as the doctor says, everything dark in him. also i think the master misdirect is deliberate, i think part of the doctor's darkness IS the master, and so that helped him manifest that way
