Good thing about this episode is I can just repost the relevant bit from last episodes River timeline with a couple of gaps filled in! 'She was then taken from Demons Run to Earth in the 1960's, as the Doctor says to Madam Vastra, where at some point she was placed into an orphanage run by the Silence (Day of the Moon) where she underwent further conditioning for her purpose of killing the Doctor. After the events of Day of the Moon however she escaped and found herself in New York where she regenerated into Mels... ..either at her own initiative, or possiibly even after being recaptured by the Silence (my favoured theory, I dont see Mels as a child being able to do all the travel, finding her parents, and where does she live? - which leads to the horrible thought there is probably a mentally broken foster famiy somwhere who can't quite seem to remember things any more! ) but somehow Mels finds her way to England and tracks down her parents when they are children and becomes their best friend. It seems along with regeneration River must have gotten some control of her aging process, as she hints at in this episode when she talks of taking her age down gradually, as she says she last regenerated when she was a toddler in New York, so she has looked about the age we saw her when she met young Amelia from since the late sixties/early seventies but once she had found them she appears to age at the same rate they do. So it seems that wasnt just a joke line to cover for the filming (at least not only, it appears to also be part of the story too which is typical Moffat clever). Knowing at some point her parents lives intersect with the Doctor she waits her chance to get close to him in order to carry out her conditioning by the Silence, and assassinate the Doctor. Though she does also seem to genuinely like her parents. She succeeds, but then also saves his life.... ..River becomes an archeologist, enlisting at the Lunar Academy in 5123 (there is that favourite Moffat future era again) in order to research, track and find a way to meet the Doctor once more... ...at some other unknown point River murders someone and gets sent to the Stormcage Prison facility... ..and then we have another gap....' favourite line of the episode, Mels to Amy about Rory being the one- "Oh cut to the song, its getting boring." Moffat being cheeky about his own episode, thats very him. And perhaps, and also very him, a hint of a smutty joke undertone, implying they should cut to the procreation (like naming the episode River was concieved at the end of 'The Big Bang). Plus I think he just loves writing for River and wanted to get to her bit. Any old Brits about who remember the Numbskulls (Dandy comic I think)? I cant help of think of them when the Tesselector appears! Given Moffat and I are about ages (and also in same general location in Scotland) it makes me wonder if they were in his mind too.

Killing him esrly could cause two major time lines i can forsee the british empire consolidates into the imperial comonwealth as it planed to back in the 30-40s Or ww3 most the europian empires dont colapse usa never becomes the leading suoer power snd the user end uo at wsr with most of europe the curent state of the world is due to post ww2 everyone owes americs money

The 5100s part allways confuses me they got injured in the 1900s so shouldnt she be in a hospital in the 1900s theyd have to have either took her specificly to a hospital in the 5100s or she just lived thousands of years alone before eventurly deciding to find the docter id asume the former is the answer tho

Lee Gannon

The professor called Candy at the end of the episode was first mentioned in a short story called Continuity Errors written by Steven Moffat in 1996 and was his first professionally published Doctor Who story.

Of all the timey wimey Dr Who episodes....this is up there! lol The best twists are the ones you don't see coming but was right there in front of you the whole time. It's why I love these last few episodes so much, you never see it coming...but once you do you kick yourself for not noticing it lol

George Alexander

She was in a futuristic hospital at the end, so the doctor took her away from the middle of WW II somewhere safe

You should search google images, 'Numbskulls Dandy Comics' as I am sure it must have inspired Moffat. But basically its a comic strip about a man who is actually run by a lot of tiny people, the Numbskulls, who live inside his head. So for example there is one stationed in the eye with a telescope to see out the eye ball, the Brain Dept with banks of computers and so on. When he, and I for that matter, were boys the Dandy was just one of those comics along with the Beano which was everywhere (particulary here as it was written and printed in Scotland, but popular acorss the UK) it was just part of the fabric of the time, everyone read them. I would find it hard to believe Moffat had never read one. Or that the Tesselector doesnt owe a little something to that absurd kids comics of the 70's and 80's.
