Idk of this is spoilers or if she has someone whos seen doctor who to tell her but after the final ep she needs to watch “the night of the doctor” short and to avoid the poster and opening credits of that one special!!

I am a bit hit and miss on Mark Gatiss penned stories, they do not always land for me, even though I am a fan of his work outside of Who. But when it does work for me it really works. It worked for me in his debut Who episode, the first time travel to the past story of NuWho with Charles Dickens and the 'ghosts', and this one works for me too. It is not hard to discern Gatiss's personal likes. He loves all things Victorian, he is fascinated with the Victorian fascination with oddity and freakishness. He is a horror fan who has written books and done documentaries on the history and development of horror film and television. Much of his non Who work is located in the north of England where he grew up. And he also loves the absurd, the hint of mad absurdity and surrealism. This episode has it all- it's got the Victorian era setting, but its the rarer seen in Who north of England, its got the freakishness of Mr Sweet, it has the body horror undertones from how he is attached, and it has the hint of absurdity and surrealism in the massive bell jars Clara and the others are kept in after 'preservation'. And it all works for me. There is a Who related piece of Gatiss's around the 50th I very much hope you will chose to react to at some point, 'An Adventure in Space and Time' (which personnaly I dont think you should watch at the 50th, but perhaps if you choose to ever delve into some classic stories, after you have seen some of those early ones, just to avoid spoilers). But it is in my view the best Who related work Gatiss has ever done.

Interesting trivia....Mrs. G (Diana Rigg,R.I.P.) and her daughter are in real life mother and daughter. But I think their relationship was a much more loving one. Also Jennie's quick change into the leather outfit was a small homage to Diana Rigg's role as 'Mrs Peel' in the British series 'The Avengers' from the '60s. Having a fantastic time watching your reactions to this series, Emme, always a pleasure to listen to you.

remember TomToms? before smartphones had gps, the little devices that you'd put in your car to give you directions?

The toy Clara is playing with on the counter near the end is Galvatron from The Transformers..Back in the eighties Marvel had the licences for both Doctor Who and the Transformers . Both the Doctor and Galvatron met and fought the same character Death's Head.

Hi Josh The "spoiler" credits start at 3:35 till 4:00 to give a specific reference for Emme, and any other Who first timers. The times are from Iplayer and Amazon prime

emmereacts

in the US at least i don't think we ever called them that! how interesting!
