Paul McGann was the Doctor in a 1996 TV movie which was the first attempt to bring the series back after it's cancelation in 1989. Although it didn't get picked up for a series Paul went on the play the Doctor in a series of Big Finish audios. The companions he mentions are his companions from those (at least those up to the time this was broadcast) Seeing this Doctor back on screen after 17 years was a big thing for those who had seen the TV movie with McGann finally getting a regeneration into the War Doctor that we saw at the end of the last episode.

Paul McGann played the 8th Doctor, but his only appearance in the show, up to this minisode, was the standalone 1996 Doctor Who TV-movie (but he has been in a lot of Doctor Who audio dramas by Big Finish). He indeed regenerated here into the "War Doctor" that we see at the end of the previous episode, played by John Hurt ("Will it hurt?" "Yes." "Good"). In this minisode they had used a picture of him in his younger years, indicating that the Doctor spent quite some time as that version of himself, ageing into the old man that we've seen.

Its the same character that showed up at the end of “the name of the doctor” they just used old footage of the actor when he was younger.

Also u should have kept watching, it would have shown in the end credits “ and introducing John hurt as the War Doctor”

As others have said, Paul McGann played the 8th Doctor in the 1996 TV movie (it's worth a track down if you have time), then in 2001 (five years before Christopher Eccleston would take on the role of the 9th Doctor), McGann reprised his 8th in a series of audio adventures from Big Finish, which became a long running regular series starting in 2007. The names he lists off just before he takes the elixir are the names of his past companions. As such, this was the first time ANYTHING from the audio adventures were acknowledged in the main series. But the 7 minutes we get here with McGann shows he was (and still is - new audio adventures are still being made 20 years later) a Hell of a Doctor.

I love that they got to go back and give 8 an official regeneration scene. Such an impactful one, too. I hope we still get the dw episode on the schedule today!! I'm too excited lol.

When it comes to day of the doctor. If you can get someone to blur out some names in the opening if it's possible to do

Seeing the 8th doctor with this production value was amazing

This was so, so huge for Classic Doctor Who fans in 2013. The Ninth Doctor debuted in Rose fully regenerated, so we never got to see how the Eighth Doctor met his end except knowing that the Time War happened somewhere between 8 and 9. For 8 years fans desperately hoped we'd get some sort of closure, especially since the Eighth Doctor had a big following from the Big Finish audios. Including me. I remember watching this the day it was released. When I heard Paul McGann's voice in this minisode and then the camera cut to him I literally had tears of joy.

There is more context to the time war story but you need to watch classic who. Massive reason why the Daleks want to destroy Galiffrey.

Might be a bit late, I was expecting that episode to be posted today according schedule

Paul Mcgann really does exude the Doctor aura, I wish we got more of him on screen. When I picture the doctor I think of his or 12 as the definitive ones.
