so glad you liked it!! this is such a different and distinctive opening for a new doctor, i love that it’s a longer episode, the pacing is so refreshing. also obligatory comment to check out peter capaldi’s music, he headlined a couple shows this week and is playing a festival today!

This was the first episode of DW that I watched as it was coming out and I remember a lot of people having the same kind of struggle that Clara has throughout the episode with the Doctor’s new face. When I look back now though, it makes so much sense. He feels like the answer to the War Doctor’s question to 10 and 11 in the 50th special: “Why are you so afraid of growing up?” Because he’s afraid people won’t accept him if he is his true, unfiltered self. This is definitely the most unfiltered Doctor and a bit of a rude one at that, but I love him dearly. Also, if you want to get a taste of what people knew Capaldi from before he started on this you can check out some clips of him as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It where he was famous for stringing together some of the absolute foulest and devastatingly cutting strings of cuss words and insults I’ve ever heard in my life.

If I'm honest capaldi is my favourite incarnation of the doctor character wise

I think i can confidently say Peter Capaldi is the biggest Doctor Who fan out of the actors who have played the Doctor , hes amazing, his sorrow and anger mixed with comedy fits the doctor so well

His music is so good , hes almost unfairly talented

Oh man if you like 12 already you are in for one heck of a ride. He's my undisputed favorite and it's not even close. Edit to add: So, you may not have noticed this, but 12 goes to save Gallifrey when he leaves briefly at the end of this episode. We know this because 12 redecorates the interior slightly, and in 12's cameo in the 50th anniversary, the TARDIS interior behind his eyes is 11's still. Which means he still hadn't redecorated. So 12 leaves Clara at the end to finish saving Gallifrey and get his new fit all figured out. I also like to think that the equations he scrawls all over the floors and walls are the last parts of the calculations to put Gallifrey into the parallel pocket universe, but this has not been confirmed I don't think.

They did get massive backlash from certain "fair weather" fans for choosing an older doctor, unfortunately. In many ways, they properly anticipated the reception Capaldi would receive and made his first episode a commentary on it, which is actually quite cool if you think about it.

that is pretty cool!!! i think learning about this stuff for when i'm watching it is so interesting. i really wonder what i would've thought about it if i were a teenager watching when it was coming out

emmereacts

emmereacts

that's such a good point especially the quote "why are you so afraid of growing up?" i love that!!!

emmereacts

agree!! it's nice to get a longer episode for him for a better introduction

The missing Amy comment was because she had longer legs, easier to reach the screwdriver. Bit of an odd one really.

So, in regards to 12 being all over the place mentally and physically through most of this, it’s touched upon a bit in Classic Who. Every time that a Timelord regenerates, the process becomes more explosive and volatile. You can see this when 9, 10 and 11 regenerate. 9 regenerates and there’s a lot of destructive energy but the ship stays fully intact. Then 10’s regeneration was so explosive that The Tardis had to rebuild for 11. As 11 is supposed to be the last regeneration of The Doctor, he allowed himself to age naturally and protect Christmas. So then, when he gets a new set of regenerations they’re so crazy and explosive he wipes out an entire fleet of Daleks using that energy. Which also explains why 11 basically sneezed and turned in to Capaldi without destroying the console room all because he focused the explosive energy and essentially became a bomb fired at the Daleks.
