a easter egg for doctor who fans but one of the Robin Hood picturs is of second doctor actor Patrick Troughton playing the role from the lost 1953 tv series.

Lee Gannon

About 30:38 minutes into the episode you see a picture of Robin Hood as played by Patrick Troughton. Not only did he play the first ever live action Robin Hood on television he also played the second Doctor in Doctor Who between 1966-1969.

Both Prince John and Richard the Lionheart are mentioned in this episode. The first Doctor met Richard the Lionheart in the story The Crusade around the time of this story and a robot version of John in the fifth Doctor story The King's Demons.

The part where they're tied up in the tower is so funny. The writing is so clever and Capaldi has amazing delivery.

This had to have an unfortunate change to its ending, the week before it aired in the real world British hostages of Muslim terrorists were beheaded live online. In the original cut the Sherrif was beheaded at the end, this revealed he was half robot, repaired by the robots after they crashed on him. This would have explained some of his dialgoue better, and how even though he has zero archery skill or form he could still hit the target. Its a shame they could not find a way to keep the reveal of him beng a robot in, but its understandable in the circumnstances why they felt a story with a lighthearted tone ending in a beheading would have been in very poor taste in the circumstances of its broadcast with UK news still full of the atrocity.

This episode is essentially the greatest timey wimey buddy cop movie ever, like an intergalactic Rush Hour, the Doctor and Robin Hood getting to scrapes!

D Scott Howard

Actor Errol Flynn (who is mentioned during the sword play on the log) played many a swashbuckling pirate in the 1930s, who would heroically slide down the sails of pirate ships by sticking his knife in and slashing down. He played Robin in 1938.

He does at one point say 'I'm half man half engine' iirc, they just sadly weren't able to back it up with any visuals so it slips the mind. Honestly I don't even think it would have been all that tasteless to keep it in really, it's not like the circumstances of the beheading are remotely similar.

I can see why the BBC would wish to change it if only that there are certain elements of the UK press who are just waiting to have any excuse to jump on the BBC and attack it for the slightest thing. But given they seem to have shot the scenes, just not finished the post production on them before it was changed, I never understood why they didnt keep it to swap back in at a later date for future DVD/Bluray when everyone would have forgotten the unfortunate timing and circumstances of its broadcast.
