I enjoy this episode a lot. It’s more an homage to heist movies than spy movies. I appreciate when dw borrows genre styles. Like in “Angels Take Manhattan” when they did a film noir lens or a western like “A Town Called Mercy” or a classic murder mystery like “The Unicorn and the Wasp.” I’m so glad you’re enjoying this era so far. The cinematography is indeed next level. It just feels like a rich production. It’s also just feels more adult. I heard Steven Moffat at a convention last year and he said, “with every script, I ask myself, will this scare kids?” He said he thought people underestimate them. Even though you need to also put in the ethical dilemmas and well-crafted plots and mature humor for us “big kids,” you can never forget that what younger kids want out of doctor who is to be scared. That audience matters the most. Obviously horror is relative- some are scarier than others but I think that feeling of “oh man, that’s freaky” is such a key element of his style.

I think you're the first person I've seen who called the ending before that reveal at the end! All the applause to Emme! You really a fully fledged Whovian now! Really like this episode, Doctor Who can be very good at putting that sci fi spin on a classic style of TV/Film and this version of a heist movie is really well done. Also a big fan of the scene in the private vault when he's telling everyone to shut up but then goes to sabre 'no de-shut up!' - Peter's styles and mannerisms are so good.

Writing for children is something I think Moffat does better than any other modern Who writer. I was a fan of his in my late teens without even knowing his name, with his first show, aimed at teenagers, Press Gang (worth looking up if youve never seen it). Being about ages with Moffat (hes a few years older) I was lucky like him to grow up in a time period when childrens tv in the UK was frankly superb and varied, from Box of Delights, through to the highly varied Dramarama or Children of the Stones and so much more quality drama. And what they all had in common is the thing I believe Moffat gets absolutely right- they all told stories for children without ever talking down to children. He took his child audience seriously, and allowed the space for them to think for themselves, to interpret, to ponder and often to be scared. I find when RTD writes episodes aimed at children they miss the mark because they are somewhat patronising, simplified, talk down. Moffats never do. In short RTD child episodes are often childish. Moffats are about what its like to view the world as a child.
