So the production team decided to give the show a soft reboot for this series, so new comers could jump in with relatively little knowledge of the show, Steven Moffat even cheekily called episode 1 “The Pilot” as a reference to TV show pilots, as if this was a brand new version of the show. New companion means new perspective so it makes sense to shake up the show a bit. It’s funny how you mention the writing being so different so far because these are all returning writers! The Pilot was Steven Moffat of course, Frank Contrell Boyce who wrote Smile also wrote In the Forest of the Night from Series 8, and Sarah Dollard who wrote Thin Ice also wrote Face the Raven from Series 9! I think that goes to show how much of an impact a new companion can have on the show! Bill brings such a grounding energy to the TARDIS! I love this TARDIS team dynamic so much!

I love this episode, it's probably in my top 5. It's just so quintessentially dw. I think it's also apt that you brought up Martha because this really felt like a moment of redemption for a rather ignorant writing blunder in 2007. Martha asked if she'd be in trouble for being black in medieval London and the doctor (an alien sure but presenting as a white man) said, "just act like you belong, it's what I do." Yea... strange advice to give a black woman worried about "being carted off by slavers." It's a brush off line for the audience, really. Here, we got the doctor in victorian London acknowledging that yes, reality is reality and it's racist and dangerous out there. Then, we see Bill quietly in the corner "acting like she belongs" and guess what- it doesn't work! Because that's not a thing. Getting to see the doctor punch a racist in the face is just the cherry on top lol. They just handled a same concern from a black female companion much better this time. Like a redo. I also really really enjoy Bill's struggle to come to terms with the Doctor's legacy here. It would be so strange to be traveling alone with a man who's lived thousands of years, killed countless people, and has so much mystery to him. Her fear and reticence is appropriate and it's meaningful to see her gradual trust and acceptance. The doctor's been called a lot in his time- an angel, the oncoming storm, the stars themselves- getting to know that has got to be daunting at first.

'I'm over two thousand years old..' (I regularly quote to myself whenever I struggle to get up) Really like this episode, all companions have an early lesson like Bill does in this one, you could say there's a similarity from this to the beast below episode (Amy's first adventure and the star whale), but I really like the journey Bill took with coming to the terms of just what it means to travel with the Doctor and the value of life. Also, a racist getting his comeuppance is always a 10/10 from me!

I agree, it was a terrible brush off line in The Shakespeare Code. Sorry but this was during the renaissance not medieval period in England. We could decide to see that attempted line differently. The Doctor, a lifeform who ran from dividing lines of class and privilege. But I also like that 10 didn't decide to instruct Martha to behave like she didn't belong in England during the renaissance period. Or reinforce the idea to be afraid of something that was unlikely to happen on mainland England during that time. She was confronted with some reactions to her later on in that episode that were played for gags too. They were ill conceived as well, in my book. That line was definitely a way too casual and clumsily line. There was certainly a way more eloquent way of saying you are no different than me and deserved to be treated as such. Without the appearance of a dismissive quip. The choice is rarely made to challenge any perceptions of history. They at least did so here to counter misrepresentations in the arts leading to some inaccurate ideas. I do think it does do a slight disservice to the people of history to propagate inaccuracies. Often to tightly fit a preconceived idea. But to regularly challenge some technicalities that are garnered from other misrepresentations in the arts. These can and will seem like such dismissals and perhaps defences.
