Karen's backstory ties into her current behaviors quite well, because it just makes sense. In the current day, she's always trying to do better, while she's always blaming herself for faults that aren't her own. We saw this after the Bulletin got attacked. Karen looked at the phones of those who were killed receiving text messages and calls from their loved ones and the first thing she said was, "This is my fault." She shoulders a lot, and it's understandable because of what happened with Kevin that the idea of "redemption" is as much of a theme with Karen as it is with Matt.
