Wonderful reaction as always, I'm glad you're enjoying the show so far. I've watched this show about ten times front to back, so I'll drop some non-spoiler facts from time to time if I remember them. About Giles being so physically close to these teenage characters, which absolutely looks awkward and inappropriate, this was actually addressed in the DVD commentary; the original show was aired in 4:3 ratio, not the remastered 16:9 you're watching it in today, so there wasn't a lot of frame to work with. This meant that if you wanted to shoot a close-up of two characters you had to kinda mush them together. The director, Joss Whedon, and the rest of the technical crew were used to shooting movies in 16:9 so they didn't really account for this at first, and since they were on a very tight budget they didn't have time to re-shoot scenes when they noticed it looked a bit weird. It happens less and less as the show goes on and everyone got more comfortable with shooting for television in 4:3. Also, since the show was shot for 4:3 ratio, you might from time to time see some film equipment like boom-mics that are supposed to be out of frame in this remastered 16:9 version. Bonus factoid: there was some controversy over the line "contrary to popular mythology, the earth didn't start out as a paradise" from Giles when the episode first aired since it refers to Christianity as being mythological, which some Christos weren't thrllled about.

OHHHH the camera ratio makes so much sense for that. im glad to hear they at least acknowledged that, and i wasnt alone in that thought.

The disks in the big jar are hosts, i.e. the body of Christ in Christian communion.
