There is a twelfth Doctor audio called The Charge of the Night Brigade which also features Mary Seacole which came out the year before. The house seen at the beginning was theorized by some fans to be the Doctor's ancestral home Lungbarrow on Gallifrey.

To quote the 10th Doctor to Donna, "You've got three fingers." Lol Donna thinks she can't open the door because the lock has three fingers

So the actor who plays Strax with Matt & Peter was the one in the hospital playing a different Sontaran but I just heard Strax

Happy Birthday for tomorrow! But meant for whenever you filmed this... so happy timey wimey birthday! Hope you had a good one! :) I love how badass they made the Sontarans and especially the leader in this, obviously with Strax before they were basically comedy villains (but Strax is legendary so no complaints!) but I do like how they made them much more legitimate here. Classic who would regularly have storylines going across four or five episodes and I always wanted that more in modern Who so love them giving us a big time plot this series. Dan with the wok was very funny, as was Swarms poses in between being shot at lol

Happy Birthday! "Half a league onward" is a reference to a poem called "The Charge of the Light Brigade" which is about an ill-fated attack by British cavalry against the Russians in the Crimean War. It did not go well. "Half a league, half a league, / Half a league onward, / Into the valley of Death / Rode the six hundred ...." Atropos is the third of the Three Fates (also known as the Moirai -- Greek mythology) -- The other two fates spin and measure the threads of life and Atropos is the one with the scissors who cuts the threads. I didn't know about Mary Seacole until I saw this episode, which is a shame. We've all heard of Florence Nightingale, who wouldn't get close to the front lines, but not the Jamaican who paid her own way there and took care of whoever needed her help. (It couldn't be because Nightingale is white, right?)

I really like how this episode makes the Sontarans feel like a real threat and not just comic relief -- though I'm glad they didn't totally ditch the humor! "Your blood shall soak our uniforms, your bodies shall soften our steps" is pretty grim, chilling. The scale of this episode is so huge! They must have shot most of it in a studio, but the CGI is really impressive. Love the shot of Dan climbing up the scaffolding and the camera pulling back and zooming out to give us the view of the shipyard. Maybe the most unsettling moment is when the Doctor is circling the TARDIS and we realize there is no door!

I also love the call-backs in this one: The hopper virus from Orphan 55. The mention of the Sontaran "Linx" who I think was the first Sontaran to appear in the classic series? And the call-back to "Rose" of course, when the Doctor introduces herself to Dan by saying "I'm the Doctor. Run for your life!"

Brian

Linx is indeed the first sontarans introduced in the series in the third doctor story “The Time Warrior” which also saw the introduction of Sarah Jane Smith the legendary companion of the 3 and but mostly 4th doctor.

Happy belated (or very early) birthday!
