doctor who hasn’t been ‘dropped’ it’s just…on a hiatus right now. i think the writers have no idea what to do after 60 years of the show and they kept relying on nostalgia to bring the audience back in but it isn’t working. hopefully some other showrunners will pick it up relatively soon, but be sure, doctor who is not over

Justinfication

So glad you didn't see that ending coming haha

Frank J

You didn't know that David Tennant was the 14th Doctor? Love it.

Steven Whaley

The fact that Peter Capaldi is my favourite of the modern era Doctors maybe stopped me fully appreciating, at the time, just how good Jodie Whittaker is. Going through her era again through your reactions has elevated my opinion of her Doctor. Don't get me wrong, I always liked her Doctor, but I like her more now... I wish we'd had a 4th series with her.

Dylan

Hopefully it won't be away too long, I guess it'll be something like 2-3 years at best to see out the tender bidding process and start the writing and production of a new series 🤞

Dylan

This episode is a lot of fun, it was also part of celebrating 100 years since the founding of the BBC. Also, the older man, Ian in Graham's meeting was one of the trio of companions at the very start of the show back in 1963.

D Scott Howard

I heard an interesting podcast (The Rest Is Entertainment) about the situation that pointed out that the BBC has never cancelled a show that they have put out for tender. Very encouraging.

I’m so glad you didn’t know about David being the 14th doctor!! So excited for the next few episodes!

Michael Thomas

Right? I don’t remember enjoying her as much as I did watching these episodes again with her. Jodie was absolutely a great doctor

I don't usually like to lore dump classic Who stuff, but since it's so heavy in this episode, and you did ask... The name Adric, when Tegan asked the Doc what she was thinking surrounded by Cybermen, was a reference to a companion that travelled with them, who was one of the very few classic series companions who actually died, rather than left. He died at the end of a Cyberman story. It's become a bit of a running joke amongst fans to make fun of his death, because the character wasn't very popular and the actor was...not the best. But it was actually a pretty well written death scene, and quite shocking at the time, especially since he was basically a child. So I was glad to see it treated with reverence here, rather than as a joke.

After your opening: where you talked about how you weren’t able to be as surprised by regenerations in Doctor Who, as much as you used to be, because you’re closer to being caught up…I couldn’t wait for the big final reveal haha. And then, when the old Doctors appeared, & you said “Where’s David Tennant?”, I actually did a little squeak of glee: I then said “Don’t worry, he’s on his way” out loud, to the indifference of the empty room I’m in haha. I’m so glad that David Tennant’s reappearance wasn’t spoiled in advance for you: that kind of thing hits so much better, when it’s a complete surprise. I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to your next full Doctor Who reaction: I always love them anyway, but this is one I especially can’t wait to watch. As for this special, it was complete and Doctor Who fan service- and I say that as a positive thing: seeing all those old Doctors & companions was incredibly special. Even though I didn’t grow up with them at the time, I’ve watched Doctor Who reruns since the late 80s when I was 4/5yo: and maybe even before that, as my family loved Doctor Who, so I probably watched it since I was a baby…though my memories of those early years are obviously a little on the sketchy side haha. So I absolutely loved seeing all those old actors back again: I think Doctor Who does that kind of “fan service” as good as any other long running TV show or film series: they definitely knocked it out of the park with this one. And even though he hasn’t been gone from the show for all that long, it was still great to have Graham back for this special: I remember not being sure if that character was going to work, due to the actor that played him being a well known comedian & gameshow host, here in the UK. I knew he had acted before, but I hadn’t seen much of his work, & I mainly knew him as a comedian & gameshow host: I liked him well enough as a presenter, but I just wasn’t sure if he’d be any good as an actor. But my concerns turned out to be completely unfounded, and Graham became a firm favourite: he instantly showed his acting chops, and that he was adept at both serious, and more lighthearted narratives. I really shouldn’t have been all that surprised, as I had thought the exact same thing when Catherine Tate was cast in the show: I only knew her from her comedy sketch show, and I thought she would play Donna as more of a caricature, instead of as a fully rounded character. But I was thrilled to be wrong in that instance as well: I should have known both of them would work, as I think that comedians/comedy actors can often work really well in more serious roles. And, just like with Donna, Graham became one of my favourite characters on the show: I think he’s actually probably a little underrated, when it comes to Doctor Who companions, due to some people ridiculously looking down on Jodie’s time as the Doctor. So I like how much you loved Graham as a character: as with the rest of the cast for this incarnation of the Doctor, I feel that Bradley Walsh needs more recognition for his time in the Tardis. And yes, Dan doesn’t always get the respect he deserves: but, as a fellow Dan, don’t worry about it- we’re used to it haha. Also the actor who played Dan, John Bishop (incidentally, another standup comedian), wasn’t 42yo when this special first aired: he was more like in his mid-fifties- say 54/55yo, when it was shot, back in 2022…so yeah, he was a lil older. In fact, I just had a quick look, and the actors that played his parents in the the show, aren’t even a decade older than him: so, if it looked like they could be similar ages, it’s because they were; they must have thought nobody would notice that his parents would have had to be 8 or 9 when he was born haha. Not sure why they got shot of Dan so early in this episode, & only brought him back at the end: they must have wanted to prioritise focusing on Yaz’s relationship with the Doctor, since they had been together since the first episode of this era. But whatever the reason, it was still a great episode, & I love how emotional you got, despite not being around for these Doctors & companions: it shows that the writing was really on point here, if it could make you choked up about a bunch of characters & actors you’d never seen before. You can imagine how it must have felt to all the fans of the older runs of Doctor Who: it was so special to have them all back, especially for the older actors to have the chance to be appreciated by fans while they were still with us. It’s a shame Elisabeth Sladen had already died over a decade before this special: it would have been great to see her back as Sarah Jane Smith, especially after she had already reappeared on the show during the modern era, along with actually having her own show, ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’. Her interactions with the Doctor, and the other older companions, would have been great: she could have gloated about how, unlike the other companions, she had actually seen the Doctor again, after he/she left her the first time, which made her the favourite companion haha. I could talk all day about this episode, but I think I’ll leave it there: I’ve already droned on for far too long as it is, and this comment is in serious danger of being longer than ‘War & Peace’ haha. I really can’t wait for the next Doctor Who reaction video: I know it’s going to be fantastic. 😀

Obviously there was an age limit during COVID before there were no vaccines at that stage they wouldn't have chance to cast anybody old enough to be Dan's parents. He was also just starting a tour around this time. Graham and Ace shipping name..Grace.

Matt

The old guy was one of the first companions Ian, he was like 99 years old or something- it was his last appearance on TV I think. Really special

Matt

BYW love your reaction. Amazing that even though you don’t know the classic who, you still get emotional- that’s what this bloody show does to you.

Matt

The flute was the second doctors.

You know, it completely slipped my mind, that this special was shot during the COVID era: now you’ve said it, it makes perfect sense why they didn’t get older actors, to play Dan’s parents. As does the rationale for Dan being limited to a brief cameo role, due to John Bishop’s starting his tour: it would be interesting to know what they would have done with the character, had John Bishop been available for the shoot. I very much approve of “Grace” as the shipping name for Graham and Ace haha. I’d happily watch a spinoff show, of them as a couple going around and solving alien mysteries: sort of like a middle-aged, low budget British version of the X-Files haha. I always thought that they could/should have done a spinoff television show of Rory, during the nearly 2000 years he spent guarding Amy when she was in the Pandorica: even it had just been a miniseries, each episode could have been set during a different period of history, where plastic Rory has to fight off various alien creatures, while protecting the Pandorica. And as we already knew that reality was going to be reset anyway, they could have had some real fun with the stories, and pretty much done anything they wanted. Not sure if that concept has ever been done in other Doctor Who media, but I think it would have made a fun TV show: they could have even had Rory work with one of the older Doctors, like Paul McGann, in one those wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stories haha. Or maybe I’ve just come up with a bit of terrible fan fiction haha. I just want more Doctor Who, or Who-adjacent stuff: especially now we don’t know when/if the show is ever coming back. I think it will: it’s too big to be allowed to die completely, and it just needs a new show runner to come along, with a bunch of exciting ideas to take the show forward. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait as long as we did last time, between the Doctor Who TV movie, in 1996, and “New Who” in 2005 haha.

niall no chill

oh diva ... oh divaaaa!! i'm so happy the David regeneration wasn't spoiled for you!!!

michael moslin

Appearances 57 years apart, a world record no less

emmereacts

ahh for some reason i had heard that it was picked up by a company, and then that company dropped it

Luke Jones

that’s lowkey what everyone else heard but it’s not true. it’s just on a break. like i said, doctor who is NOT over: it’s on a break.

David Robinson

Peter Davison the 5th Doctor was my Doctor growing up, I'm just old enough to have experienced the last two stories of the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) but was not old enough to understand what I was watching at the time. I remember being rather shocked with 5 became 6.
