When people say that Buffy really takes off in season two it doesn't fully happen until after the midpoint, but "Lie to Me" is notable beyond being a less on-the-nose version of Inca Mummy Girl where Buffy can relate to someone chosen for a destiny they don't want. While "Buffy" deals with many themes and philosophies over the course of the 7 seasons, if I had to pick only one that represents the series, it would be the theme/philosophy that "Lie to Me" expresses more clearly than any other episode in the entire run: "You have a choice. You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice." This is what Buffy experienced in "Prophecy Girl," despite being chosen, she had a choice to make (and the choice that she made was obviously very different from Billy Fordham's).

This is such a great episode. One of those I only saw once or twice, very long ago, and so I'm kind of watching it for "the first time again" along with you. I'm glad you noticed that the Giles/Buffy relationship is deepening and becoming something very grounding and healthy for the both of them, not just for Buffy. As much as Giles came off as a silly goofball in season 1, this character is the cornerstone of not only the show but the Scoobies as a family unit. And this is why a silly show about a petite blonde kicking vampire ass was able to last for 7 seasons and make fans all around the world for the last 30 years =)
