This was the episode for me that killed this iteration of the show for me. I was along for the ride so far, as wonky as it could be, but the disgusting parallels to real-life events and the use of manufactured consent to condone torture against survivors of a genocide… all to end with a song to solve racism and a pat on the back… I was speechless and remain so over a year later. Oppression as a topic has been well-tread in Doctor Who itself, both classic and new, with the Doctor NEVER brutalising the victims, we never saw the Doctor so much as admonish the Ood when they were freely murdering humans to resist - because why would he. The both-sidesism is absolutely brutal. There will never be a lower low for Doctor Who.

Yes, the Rani was in fact a 6th and 7th Doctor villain. Fans have been expecting a comeback for 20 years, there was even a red herring where Missy called herself a Random Access Neural Interface in Dark Water.
