Th quote at the beginning and end is from Jack London's " The Call of the Wild." And Willow briefly mentions it at the end, but Pete is based on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he wasn't supernatural, his powers were 'weird science' based.

We actually had three sets of Beauty and The Beast: Pete and Debbie Buffy and Angel Willow and Oz

I really love this episode; I’m not sure if it’s classed as underrated or not, as I don’t know what the rest of the Buffy fandom thinks of it, but for me, it’s probably one the top 10 episodes in the entire run of the show. I’m glad you liked it; I said in a comment last week, that I was really looking forward to you watching this one, and I was not disappointed. I love it when episodes of Buffy deal with real issues, but in a fantasy way; I thought they did a really great job of showing how domestic violence works, & how toxic ideas of manliness and masculinity can often be a major factor in perpetrating it. They did a great job of showing how domestic violence works, and how abusers manipulate their targets: first comes the degrading and belittling words, that tear at the victim’s sense of self worth; this is then followed by the physical violence, and then the fake/manipulative apology, that plays on the emotions of the victim, and exploits the affection they still have for their partner. In the apology, they also put the blame for the violence squarely on the victim; we saw Pete say how Debbie should know not to do things to set him off, making out that SHE was somehow at fault for HIM beating HER. And when Buffy & Willow tried to confront her, she even told them it was her fault for “making him crazy” & how he only did it because he loved her; the abuse and manipulation from Pete had worked, & made Debbie believe she deserved everything that he did to her. As someone who grew up around domestic violence, & witnessed it firsthand, the way they depicted it in this episode, was very powerful to me; I thought the actors did an incredible job with the material, & while the theme was laid on slightly thickly, it didn’t come off as being a PSA on domestic violence. That concludes the serious part of my comment; apologies if I went on and on about it. One of the other things I love about this episode, is how the title of “Beauty and the Beasts” can be applied to all 3 sets of couples/ex couples: Pete & Debbie, Willow & Oz, and Buffy & Angel- sorry to Scott, Buffy’s current boyfriend, this isn’t really about you haha. And what makes it such a great part of the story, is that the real monster isn’t either of the 2 actual beasts; it’s the regular human being; well, by regular, I mean in a non-supernatural kind of way, unlike Angel the vampire, or Oz the werewolf. Pete was just a regular, insecure piece of shit, who took a potion (drug) to make himself more of a macho guy, because he was frightened of losing Debbie; we don’t know if he was always a piece of shit loser, because we don’t actually get to see his backstory. But he let his own jealousy and insecurities control him, until he became a violent and abusive arsehole, so fuck him; being insecure isn’t an excuse for domestic violence, and he even said that he no longer needed the potion, to turn into the creepy veiny monster, which does suggest he was always a piece of shit haha. But the 2 actual “beasts”- the werewolf and the vampire, were shown to not be piece of shit monsters, despite everything they’d been through; Angel had spent centuries being tortured, literally going to Hell and back, yet he didn’t let it turn him into a monster. And unlike “Piece of Shit Pete”, neither Angel & Oz actually chose to become the beasts that they are, nor do they want that side of them to hurt anybody, especially the people that they love- Buffy & Willow. I could talk about those themes for hours- & I probably already have in this comment haha. I loved your comments about Angel wearing trousers & shoes, but no top; that was a bit of a strange choice by everyone involved in the episode haha. But I think that the decision to have him dressed that way, was probably made cos having him completely naked would made it too hard for them to film; it would have been especially difficult during his fight scene in the woods with Buffy, as spends a good bit of that fight on his back, so they’d have had a hell of a time making sure they didn’t get his danglies in shot haha. They could have made a few tweaks to the choreography of the fight, or only shot him from the waist up; but they probably thought it was simpler to just stick a pair of trousers on him, & make no mention of the subject in any of the dialogue, in the hope that people wouldn’t even think about it…but like you, every time I watch this episode, I wonder where he got half an outfit from haha. But hey, in this episode, Angel isn’t the only one who does strange things with clothes; during his fight with Pete, when Oz turns into his werewolf form, his clothes somehow miraculously transform into fur…because reasons haha. I think that one was more for storytelling timing; it may have ruined the moment a little, if Oz had just started stripping off in front of Pete, before he changed into a werewolf…it would have been funny as hell, but not the badass moment they were going for haha. They could have had Oz already naked when Pete turned up, as he was getting ready for the sun to go down; but having Oz buck-ass nekkid, as Pete menacingly threatens him, might not have created the tone they were aiming for for that particular scene haha. I think the scene of Pete & Debbie, where you thought someone was watching them, was just an add cinematography choice by them; it does look like someone is watching them, and what makes it feel even more like that, is the fact they’ve done similar shots like that before, including in this episode, when Xander creeped up on Willow in as she was examining the body in the morgue. Makes it very confusing haha. And you’re right about Angel probably coming back too soon, after season 2; I think it was due to him being such a popular character, that they just couldn’t hold off for half a season, to bring him back from the Hell dimension. They could have just had him in dreams, or showed flashbacks to when he was around- perhaps even in scenes we hadn’t seen before; but I think they probably chose to bring him back early on, because it was pretty obvious he was returning, so there’s no point delaying the inevitable. Or maybe they just had stories they wanted to tell, & didn’t think they would have time in the 2nd half of the season. Whatever it was, I wish they’d held off putting him in the fucking credits; that was a pretty dead giveaway to everybody, that Angel would be back at some point. I know people already knew it at the time; but I’m thinking more about for people watching it years later, such as your good self, who either weren’t around, or else weren’t paying attention, to all Buffy news & gossip leading up to season 3. It kind of ruins the surprise of Angel’s full return; especially as the credits feature clips of him that obviously come from season 3, since we haven’t seen them before…bit of a dead giveaway, really haha. They did the same thing in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, when they put David Tennant & Billie Piper’s name in the credits; yes, people who watched it at the time, knew they were both going to be part of the special, but they still could have either left them, or removed them, for people watching at a later date. It may seem like a minor thing to a lot of the other people, who watched it at the time, but I still find such “spoilers” incredibly irritating haha. But anyway, I think I’ve rambled on enough about this episode for one lifetime; there’s still probably other things you said, that I was going to talk about, but my mind has gone blank as to what they are, & this comment is already ridiculously too long as it is haha. As always, I’m really looking forward to your reaction to the next episode- which I’m just about to watch; it’s a pretty fun one, and I think you’re probably going to enjoy it. Great work, as always, on this Buffy video, Emme; I hope you’re having a fantastic week, and that the rest of the week goes well for you too. 👍🙂 All the best. xx (P.S: I’m also loving your reactions to ‘VisionQuest’; it’s such a fantastic show. I am absolutely thrilled to have James Spader back, not only as the voice of Ultron, but this time as his physical avatar as well; I’ve been a huge fan of his for a few decades now, and it’s always a joy when he pops up in something. Though I never watched the US version of ‘The Office’ that you know him from; I don’t even think I was aware that he was in it, as that show kind of passed me by. But I love loads of his other work; he has a voice that could melt Vibranium haha. I’m really looking forward to seeing where the show goes, and I can’t wait for your reaction videos of them 🙂)
