I have so many complicated feelings about this show!

This is 500 years in the future. Some planets are developed and have high tech and big cities. Other planets were used as dumping grounds for criminals and inconvenient ethnic groups and they have barely any tech at all. They use horses because vehicles need expensive parts they can't manufacture but horses make more horses.

They use Chinese mixed with English partly because the people who originally settled these worlds came the American-Chinese Hegemony and partly to get past the censors. All the swearing is in Chinese.

The ship is named Serenity (after the Battle of Serenity Valley you saw at the beginning). It's a Firefly class cargo ship.

Yes, this was supposed to be on for more than one season, but Fox messed it up bad. They showed the episodes out of order and then pre-empted several episodes and put baseball on instead. It was only after the show was cancelled and came out on video that it had a chance to build a following.

Based on your reaction to this episode, I cannot wait to see how you feel by the time you finish with the movie. Obviously no spoilers from me, but I like that everyone is a flawed person in this show in some way and yet all of their character motivations in this episode and each episode going forward start to feel very real once you understand why they're making the choices they make. It's a super well written show, but they do drop you right in the middle of things. This is going to be a hell of a ride.

Mostly three-fold: meta: the creator Joss Whedon has a bad reputation amongst people he's worked with in the past, but in story, in trying to be "a Western," I think the "Browncoats" resemble the Confederacy & the Reavers are stand in for the negative representation of Native Americans in those cowboy movies. Oh & four, I like the Chinese slang but...where are any actual Asian people? (& Jayne's actor turned out to suck but that's life.) I guess five, it claims in worldbuilding that sex workers are reputable, but the show only acts shitty about it. But also, it is a lot of fun, & the reason the Confederacy & Native stereotypes have been filed down, it's trying to use Western tropes without actually recapitulating them. I think its a good depiction of defiance & survival & I like it a lot. So I definitely am...sometimes focusing on the problems from the point of view of a fan.

we have 1 billion chinese, in the future mandarin will be more and more importent and its logical they will mix in for the global language. while india also has so many people they have alot of languages and tend to speak english so chinese is the logical language to mix with english
