**This episode is up and ready to hear wherever you get podcasts.**

We’re rounding out Spooktober with a look back at vintage forensics and Historical Toxicology with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Deborah Blum who authored “The Poisoner’s Handbook.” She is a delight and her love for chemistry and history is contagious.

Also Aqua Tofana, arsenic, old lace, Mr. Yuck, plant toxins and so much more. Did you listen? What did you think?

Also for your Spooktober gatherings, I invite you to enjoy your Podmother Jarrett’s 22 versions of the Monster Mash in genres from monks to the Beastie Boys to Dylan to Phoebe Bridgers. Challenge: play it in the background and see how long it takes people to realize they’re ALL the Monster Mash. It’s so weird and fun. He just released it as the album “Jarrett Sleeper Plays the Monster Mash” and Apple may not have it up yet but Spotify does:

Send to anyone who might enjoy it. I think the Darkwave version is my favorite but let me know yours in the comments.

Okay you pumpkins, beware of candy-hungry skellies.

Mr. Yuck's history was definitely a cool TIL for me. I had to pause before questions and I am berry (get it, cuz of pumpkins) excited to listen to more of it later!!

The Poisoner's Handbook was such a good read, can't wait to listen to this one.

“A PUMPKIN IS A BERRY?!” Man that was a great ep too

Alie Ward

She’s so fun and thoughtful and animated and just a great convo.

Keerat Singh

The story of aqua tofana was so interesting! People helping people but through poison and murder… perfect for spooky season!

Margaret Downs

This episode was so fun! I've read and loved her books, and I loved hearing how she got there.

Carri Miller

Loved the episode! Reading the book now!

Maria Andrus

This was such a good episode!!! After listening i want to reasearch everything I can about Mary Anne Cotton, im going to be her for Halloween now! . Thank you so much PodDad 💗

Ted Vician

I read it years ago and remember it being really good. I think I might read it again.

Ted Vician

You dropped a Bel Biv Devoe reference and skipped over a band named Poison, who brought us classics like _Every Rise Has A Thorn_!

Sleepy John

Just shared the link to my sister, the PhD in Pharmacology.

Jeni

Oh my goodness!! The Wikipedia article of the day today is about the 1858 Bradford sweets poisoning, what a coincidence😱

Alie Ward

Oh my GOD how did I let that happen. I need to have a press conference

Alie Ward

Deborah's next book comes out in late 2026 I think so you'll have to pick that up, too

Alie Ward

Her passion for science history is really delightful. Her research took her to dusty archives and I just love her curiosity

Alie Ward

The pigtails on fire really got me. Oh my word.

Alie Ward

Just knowing that there was little in the way of escape for so many women is so sad, right?

Brenna Hull

Two of my questions were asked!! 🥲 Thank you!

Brain 🧠 Shenanigans

One of the (many) topics I’ve been waiting to hear about! I love this stuff SO much, it is so fascinating. Alie, how do you feel about making Ologies a daily podcast? There’s just SO. MUCH. TO. LEARN! (j/k that’s an unrealistic demand and I would never encourage something that would lean to burnout) I appreciate you and all of the time and hard work you put into this podcast (podmom Jarret too!) to bring SO much joy into learning about the wonders of this hunk of rock we live on 🩵

Brain 🧠 Shenanigans

I still haven’t recovered from that little truth bomb 🫠 I just picked 10 huge, heavy ass berries from my backyard — gotta get that front porch ready for spooOoOoooOooky Halloween!

Colby Evans

@alie - you're really losing your touch. She kept saying how not-dumb your questions were!

Colby Evans

I kinda want that nickname

Rachael Mae

As a toxicologist myself, I was SO excited to listen to this one!! Perfect for spooky season. 😍

Here in Oregon, not only did we go through an event in 1984 where 751 people were sickened by an intentional infection of salad bars with Salmonella https://www.oregonhistoryproject.org/articles/historical-records/ma-anand-sheela-b-1950/ , but in 1942, some 47 patients at the state mental hospital were killed when Sodium Fluoride (a roach poison) was mistakenly mixed with their scrambled eggs. https://offbeatoregon.com/1211c-asylum-kitchen-mixup-killed-hundreds-with-scrambled-eggs.html

Mervyn Barenie

The only time I was sent to the principal's office resulted in a set of Mr. Yuck stickers getting sent to my home. We were dissecting a gladiola in science class and a friend dared me to eat a petal. My 6th grade brain thought it would be funny, but my teacher did not.

Ted Vician

Possibly because Poison’s big hits were out almost 40 years ago. As was Alice Cooper’s brief 80s comeback hit _Poison_.

Emma Porter

I should've got in the thread earlier, wondering how accurate Agatha Christie was with her poison depiction in her novels... She worked in an apothecary and people say they're pretty accurate with her mysteries

JillyDoogs

I disagree. Alie’s questions were wonderful. Anxious people sometimes feel like our questions are dumb and we preface it by saying, “ I hope this is not a dumb question but…”

Noasusan

Oh my gosh I loved this episode! It was so fascinating and I immediately added all her books to my Christmas Wishlist. Thank you for always finding the best and coolest people to ask dumb questions!
