I hope you're hungry for some dehydrated casserole because the lovely Maggie Coblentz and I chatted all about food in space: the tastes, the smells, the process, the nutritional value, the best, the worst, the sanctioned, the smuggled, and why she has some on her desk.

Did you listen? Let's talk about it in the comments! This one was a ... blast.

It was super interesting to listen to this as someone who, due to long COVID, can only eat about 15 foods, all of them bland. It’s VERY real how borderline-nauseating it becomes to eat the same bland thing for the 50th, 100th, 200th day in a row. P.S. Wear a mask in public y’all; you do not want this. I had no pre-existing conditions and was a perfectly healthy 25-year-old. This can truly happen to anyone, including those who are vaccinated. Respirator masks like a KN95, N95, or FFP2 are best, but any mask is always better than nothing.

I am so, so sorry to hear you're dealing with this, and I hope our Long Covid episodes with Dr. Wes Ely helped educate people in your life who may have needed to hear them! I have never gotten covid (knock on wood) but people I know with Long Covid are suffering so much. I'm still the lady on the plane in the mask and this is a good reminder for folks to keep up precautions specially as flu season ramps up, too. Hugs ❤️

Alie and team, thank you for the shout out and tomorrow for Ologies art Friday. I am honored and absolutely giddy! This episode was an infinite amount of food/science mash up of info! Floating… eating… floating while eating and drinking. Hah! Fun and sounds tedious. Also the Ologist’s helmet she made, made me feel like I was suffocating just listening. Hahaha but all for science and betterment of space exploration and travel. She was so warm and charming and I loved her no fucks given approach to her work. This like every episode was absolutely wonderful. I also converted a friend today with the mention of both ADHD episodes, she loves micro learning and was just diagnosed and trying to figure out her “snow flurry, forgetful brain”. ❤️❤️❤️

Absolutely incredible job researching this episode! We recently did an episode on my podcast, Aspiring Martians, on Martian Nutrition and listening to all of your research in this episode was stunning and awe-inspiring. I really look up to you Alie and so thank you for the work you and your team do!

Susan actually did SO much research on this because I was traveling for a wedding! So so lucky to have her brain on the team.

JillyDoogs!! You're the talk of the Ologies office this week! We are so so honored -- it means so much to us.

I got Pop Rocks in my hair once also. They washed out pretty easy though! Noisy, but easy 👍

I was so grateful that you did those episodes (and that you were addressed long COVID during the Disability Justice episode as well!), and I’m so, so glad you’re protecting yourself and those around you ❤️

Every time I bump into food in sociology and ethics, I'm floored by how far the repercussions of a diet can echo. With a bachelors in sociology, you'd think I'd know better, and yet. Space! Also, Alie, thanks so much for being brave and saying non-anglo patron names every time. I know mine can be intimidating. You did well and I appreciate it!

Alie Ward

I looked up the pronunciation for it and also learned you're a FIRE GODDESS!

I never turn down a chance to eat pop rocks

Aaa that's so cute you looked it up! My day's made now! 🔥❤️‍🔥

This was such an interesting episode and it made for a very entertaining and informative 5 AM drive on our way to go celebrate the holidays early with our family this morning. However, it was such an inopportune time to listen to it because after a late night with too much food too late at night, I was struggling with tummy troubles. I lost track of the times the word “vomit” was said and made me nauseous. 😅 It wasn’t quite as bad as listening to the beatles two part episode while driving through a forest, but dysphoric all the same. Also! As proud members of the Rancho Gordo Bean Club, we will not stand for the anti-bean slander! Yes, they can be full of fiber that creates farts, but they’re such an amazing plant based option for protein and fiber. Maybe an episode for the future? 🧐 Otherwise, loved it!

What a delightful episode, just what I needed to hear In These Times. I am SO gratified to know that kimchi has made it to space. I am also really impressed if they managed to somehow minimize the wonderful, STRONG kimchi smell. I want to say btw that, if memory serves, author Samuel Delany may have originated the idea of coffee "bulbs". At least, I first encountered them in his 1976 book "Trouble on Triton".

I never thought an episode on space food would be the episode that made me ok with never having the chance to be in/on the ISS. Loved this episode!
