We got a good one for you. SUCH A GOOD ONE. I’m posting this from a car en route to the first annual TikTok Awards, so please root on our friend Alexis Nikole Nelson and send good vibes for her nominations tonight!

And enjoy the platypus info dump!

Venom? A platypus has it all. Scholar, conservationist, and Ornithorhynchologist Dr. Tahneal Hawke of @platypus_protector is here to run through the baffling anatomy and answer all of our WHAT'S THE DEAL, WHAT EVEN *ARE* THEY questions, plus chat about field work, evolution, how to spot a platypus, why you can't have one in your bathtub, and myths about platypus espionage. Also, a platypus might be sexier than you. Listen wherever you get podcasts, folks. [no platypus emoji]

Yesss can’t wait to listen!!!!! Thank you thank you!!! But the instagram isn’t correct- platypus_protector is Dr. Tamielle Brunt. Dr. Hawke is @platypus_ci

Krysta

only half way into the episode and have learned SO MUCH about platypuses. loving the episode so far!

Where is our platypus emoji? 😭

This episode was AWESOME! I love listening to these on my morning commute to school and I gasped aloud in the train when I heard they were the size of KITTENS?! I already thought they were amazing animals and now even more so.

I really wanted to see a puggle / baby platypus after this episode, so I googled it and wow the internet has failed me. I saw several photos of completely different looking duck billed creatures, only to notice that they were all bigger relative to the hand that was holding them than an adult would likely be. Thanks AI (artificial intelligence, not a concept artist named Albert), you will certainly trick the less informed.

After listening to the whole thing one thing is certain - my Australian friends are not ready for a platypus fact dump this weekend! Really enjoyed this one, thanks!

As an Australian I only saw platypus for the first time in the wild 2 years ago in Cairns and was SHOOK at how small they were - I always thought they were the size of an otter or a beaver too! I was even more shook to learn they are found all the way down the east coast! Time to find out if they live in the Yarra River where I live in Melbourne 👀

I love themmmm! I am Australian but have never managed to see one in the wild but one day I hope my dream will come true! Also I have never heard of Pierre Platypus BUT when I was growing up and Brisbane had Expo 88 we had Expo Oz as the mascot and he was one cool platypus!

GhoulNextDoor

Such a fun episode! And I came away with a new fear of platypuses 😂 still love them and they are fascinating but I am happy to love them from afar, I was thinking their venom was like a bee sting not that they are cute little duck beavers of indescribable suffering 😂

Devon

Dad Ward....I love you so much but not even you won't get me to give up my coffee.

Both times I visited Eungala rainforest in FNQLD I saw a wild platypus within a couple of hours of walking around/sitting watching. This was mid to late afternoon. If anyone wants a more northerly hot spot!

Brent Rollins

It was so strange (but good) to listen to an ep with a fellow Aussie accent!! Such cool creatures.

Maddie Ru

Inspired me to go platypus seeking whilst I'm back home for the holidays, going into the bush tomorrow so hopefully I'll find one!

Marc Rubin

Whoa! What a great episode on such a strange little creature! It seems as though a mr potato head was put together with random parts and brought to life! Also, please do an episode on veterinary gerontology with my lovely wife, Dr Ashley Portmann of Home Together Vet!!! https://www.instagram.com/p/C7MskGrOW5O/?igsh=eHM4NXV2YTB2ZzR4

Loved this one. These creatures are delightful goofballs. Highlights for me: they are the size of a kitten, their bills aren’t as hard as I imagined, and the venomous ankle weapons.

DeeDeeNoodle

I'm on the sunshine coast in QLD and there is a spot in the hinterland where you can see them!

I am an American living in Australia for 15 years and I now insist on a field trip here. I'd love to play tour guide for anyone wanting to visit! I know a few ologists (sadly their specialities have already been done) but also know a platypus spot not too far from my place where I've seen one many times! It's magical. Please come to Australia if you're able people, especially while your USD are stronger than our AUD.
