**These episodes are published and ready to hear wherever you get podcasts. Let's talk about it in the comments.**

What a week. We have a lot or you:

– On Monday, we put out **Bonus Episode: ICYMI Moments of 2025 with newly beloved Ologists** with some of the best nuggets of last year. It’s a great teaser for the ones you never heard, and a happy little refresher on what you may have forgotten. Also a nice one to send to friends to get them hooked! I hope

– Also on that bonus episode, I announced **the first new merch we’ve had in a long time** and I’m so genuinely excited about it. Listener and friend of the podcast, Andrea Diaz, is a public defender here in LA as well as a great artist and offered to design some merch to keep our heads up and our resolve strong amid so many worthwhile protests. It features a quote from Revolutionology expert Dr. Jack Goldstone, which is surrounded by items that keep us stronger together: a whistle, a marker, a megaphone, a first aid kit, etc. **All proceeds from sales go to the National Immigration Law Center.** So please do check those out and spread the word to anyone who wants to support a great cause while inspiring others.

– And lastly, this week’s episode is with the wonderful animal behaviorist Dr. Ted Stankowich, who runs through some wild **Zoohoplology facts about animal defenses.** Barbs. Spurs. Stinks. Scutes. Shrieks. Fashion. Drama. Plus: armadillos, skunks, pangolins, horned lizards, wombats, coyotes, kit foxes, poodles, porcupines, tigers, deer and the will to survive.

So let’s talk about it all in the comments! Let me know if you’ve ordered the new merch, and feel free to tag us @Ologies on Instagram (or DM us a pic) in your merch so we can share it and spread the word.

Okay, take care of yourself and keep looking for the wonder and the helpers all around you.  There's a lot of good out there.

Your father of the podcast,

Sir Alison Ann Ward

I totally forgot about my audio question, and it was wonderful to be directed to that paper about chemical signaling in fish! 🥰 Speaking of altruism and chemical exchanges in the sea, Margaret McFail-Ngai did a lovely episode of The Deep-Sea Podcast about bobtail squid, and how adults 'pre-colonize' even unrelated, newly hatched squid with the bioluminescent bacteria they eject daily: https://www.deepseapod.com/episodes/063-bioluminescent-symbiosis-with-margaret-mcfall-ngai

Also, I wish I could gift Dr. Stankowich a custom 'Stink, Stankowich, Stunk' sign for his office

I can’t stop thinking about pink fairy armadillo butts now, thanks dad ward

Elinor Wahl

Aw, thank you for reminding me!

Elinor Wahl

Oh yes - regarding wombats and how they plug their burrows, are you aware of the unofficial Sydney Olympics mascot: Fatso, the Fat-Arsed Wombat?

Elinor Wahl

I just saw a video of one and it's crazy, they really are like mammalian prawns

Sarah with an h

Can confirm that one's a banger. Fucking squids.

CurtisDawg

What would the ultimate defensive animal have? Stinky-armor-plated-spikes that are loaded with venom?

CurtisDawg

The Seahawks had a ferocious defense this year! ;-)

Felipe Jimenez

Yes!!! I think it was the best part of the episode learning that they exist

Brain 🧠 Shenanigans

No Alie, you’re not alone in your desktop clutter = mental heath status 🫣

Dan Makoske

What do we know about the effects of long-term use of symptom relievers like loratadine?

Monica Olvera

Is there a roundup of the superheroes that have defenses inspired by animal defenses ?

The Farming Linguist

Pretty sure my muscovy ducks use poop as a defense mechanism. Whenever I need to handle them, they shoot a stinker my way - and they can shoot pretty far. Dr. Stankowich mostly mentioned that there were no known animals that release a defensive compound in their poop, but for me, the poop itself is more than enough to make me weary. It could of course be a fear mechanism, but I swear they are taking aim, and it feels personal!

The Farming Linguist

I caught the first 20 mins of the best-of/ICYMI podcast in an MRi machine. I was just about to ping the techs because I thought there was something wrong when it kept repeating so many different intro lines that I thought they had pulled up some weird supercuts compilation on youtube or something. But it was nice to have Alie and the ologists to keep my company while trying my best to lay still

Erin Snook

Cat and mouse armor! Ok Alie we're about halfway through this episode and this morning my daughter and I were looking through the Feb 2024 issue of National Geographic and found an article about Jeff de Boer who makes suits of amor for Cats and Mice. Y'all have to check it out! https://youtu.be/vQI3dS1tShg?si=faIbhiDPkmeTPMAn

Abbie

I can’t wait to dig into horned toads who shoot blood out of their eyes. That aside sent me down a rabbit hole hahaha

Alie Ward

Aaaah, what a specific time to get that jumble! I hope the MRI and the results went well.

Alie Ward

"shoot a stinker" is a beautiful phrase

Ted Vician

This was an interesting episode and provides some thoughts to take into science fiction or fantasy writing or role-playing games. What sort of defenses would alien or fantastic creatures have? Did dragons evolve fire-breathing as a defense?

robin

Okay but hear me out: On Windows, there is an option to just completely hide all desktop icons. You can just *pretend* to be okay lol
