I’ve been so excited for this to come out! My conservation biology professor spent so much time working with big cat genetics, I told him I’d share this with his as soon as it came out. He was excited to get ahold of it. Yippie!

It's so great to hear this convo with Dr. Cancellare. I have also been a social media fan of hers for ages.

Fantastic ep. Last winter I was in Yosemite and had taken 2 tabs of lsd for a hike around the valley. 2 hrs in I'm rounding the back side of the Ahwahnee and 2 guys stop me and say they saw a mountain lion up ahead, I gulp and look where they were pointing and see a bobcat rolling on its back in the sun :)

I'm doing hiking wrong...

A most delightful episode! My husband and I were camping in 2001 at Dark Canyon campground in southern California when one morning the birds became deafening. Just so loud. And then eerily silent like someone had flipped a switch. Later, not far from our tent, we found fresh mountain lion prints but had assumed the birds when quiet when the mountain lion approached, not the opposite!

This was fun, especially because it popped up on my feed after I finished a hike on a trail that had a freshly posted sign about a mountain lion sighting, a few hours east of where the Ologies expert called in from Montana :) We get lion sightings in the Bozeman area fairly regularly and consequently I try to be mindful of wearing headphones on hikes because like Dr. Cancellare said birds can tip you off, be it lion or otherwise. I like a bigger, brighter daypack too, to make myself appear larger. The audio of big cats in heat will live in my head rent-free and I thank you for that heads up, yiiiikes!

I loved cats already so I may have been biased but oh my gosh did I ever love this episode 🤍

Colin Maydahl

Thanks. On that hike we shared my ear buds and listened to the "Fun" ep. Thank you for all the work that you and the rest of the Ologies team do. We all really appreciate it.

Colin Maydahl

Maybe we need an Ologies hike meetup!

Great episode! I do have one question though. She states that the common ancestor of cats comes from Africa, but everything I’ve read says that they evolved in Asia. The domestic cat ancestor comes from Africa, but Panthera blytheae comes from Asia. Maybe something has changed though from what I’ve read.

Why has it never occurred to me that there are multiple tiger species / why do we not do a better job of advertising there are multiple species of tiger lol.

I heard my name in the questions section for the first time!! 😄 It really does feel great to hear your name read aloud on the episode, haha. I love that you do that Alie.
