*This episode is published and ready to hear wherever you get podcasts. Let's talk about it.*

Okay so this completes our two-parter on Enology: last week's was how to drink wine with the wonderful sommelier Andre Hueston Mack, and this week we have Tara Gomez and Mireia Taribó of Camins2Dreams.com winery to tell us all about how grapes are harvested (surprising!), how they are squished (also surprising!), different grape varieties and Indigenous perspectives on land stewardship, as well as their very sweet and rom-com worthy love story (adorably, unexpectedly surprising!)

Did you listen? And did anyone cruise the wine aisle looking for critters? If you have ever squished grapes with your feet, please tell us. I need to hear this,

Let's discuss below.

Cheers,

Your Podfather Alison Ward

Crushing grapes with your feet is the best! They're surprisingly soft and the experience can border on therapeutic. I only wish I still grew my own grapes so that I could keep doing it. Alas, if I'm buying grapes to make wine it is just easier to buy them pre-crushed, but I really do miss that aspect of enology.

How many buckets do you have to crush for a barrel? Did you have your own grapes or do you pay someone to go do it???

Elliot Heye

i don’t drink, and the only wine i’m familiar with is winking owl from aldi. the animal marketing works!!

PotatoesandSalmon

It takes around 900lbs of grapes to fill a standard wine barrel... depending on how full your buckets are, you're looking at about 18-20 buckets worth of grapes. My backyard vines never made this kind of quantity, but I was part of a club for a while which would source about a ton from local vineyards every year. Sometimes we'd pay to have the grapes harvested, other times we'd pick them ourselves.

I buy wine based on the label 🫤 I keep the cool bottles!

I loved this episode! This couple is awesome, I now want to buy all their wine🥹 I used to get a red wine called lab because it had a Labrador retriever on the label…couldn’t tell you if it was actually good but I got it because it looked like my dog 😅

Jaclyn Ficcaglia

One of my favorite Sauvignon Blanc bottles has a killer whale on it, probably why I bought it! Now I’m gonna search for critter wines exclusively when I shop 🐶

Another fun and informative episode! Alie can't imagine a wine with a slug on it ? We have Hermit Woods Winery in Meredith NH. It's logo is a snail! https://hermitwoods.com/

We already had a trip booked to Cali (Sta Rita Hills is my fav!) and have added a visit to Camins 2 Dreams to our itinerary. Yay!! Thanks Alie!

Alie, I just want to say as a Napa-based Somm and 20-year wine industry geek, your choice of Ologists for these episodes was so thoughtful and SO important. Our industry has too long been white, male, cis, and straight. I always appreciate your intentioned decisions in choosing your experts, but this one really hits home personally. Best podcast and best Pod Dad ever.

This was such a cool episode as someone who was born and raised in Santa Maria and saw wineries all over! Their wine is on my list now!
