Interviewing a psychobiologist tomorrow, so toss me some "how dat brain werk?" questions or addiction questions. (She specializes in meth, yay!)

Comments

Caelan Conrad

I've heard that repressed memories have been "debunked", but I've repressed quite a few things that have happened to me. Is it really that uncommon for the brain to make a memory inaccessible for a period of time?

Greg

Any advances from a psychobiology perspective for ADHD? How about diseases like Alzheimer's, etc?

DandelionGirl

What are the biological differences between genetic depression and situational depression.

DandelionGirl

Any biological hacks to making anxiety chill out?

DandelionGirl

Why do habits become addictions? And why are they so hard to break?

DandelionGirl

What are the connections between depression and anxiety, because it seems like you can't have one without the other.

Aaron Herdman

For a psychobiologist, is the mind-body problem (from philosophy) a thing? Is it interesting?

Dan Engler

Besides withdrawal headaches, are there any documented negative effects of caffeine addiction? (I just went back to regular coffee after 7 months of decaf, because switching didn't help my insomnia and even "good" decaf kinda sucks.)

Michael Satumbaga

I've had to quit coffee just to manage my Anxiety and also thanks to Lexapro I've been able to live a lot better, sleep better and just feel overall like a different person. Does anxiety harm the body overall if left untreated? Also I didn't know I had anxiety until I literally thought I was having a heart attack and went to the ER how does one go from not having it or maybe just not knowing to all of a sudden having a full blown panic attack whilst relaxing watching an episode of friends!

Joe Weinmunson

How do you feel about the term addiction being used about overeating, spending time on your cell phone, or other activities that lack the component where an intoxicant is involved? Is it a useful metaphor, the same phenomenon, or something else entirely?

Christa Avampato

I'm fascinated by fandom. Why do we become a fan of certain things and not others? Why are some people devoted fans while others are not? Why do we get so emotional about the people, teams, bands, etc. that we're fans of? What part of the brain does fandom impact?

Christa Avampato

Is there any psychobiological difference between being addicted to something harmful versus helpful? Thinking here about the difference between drug and alcohol addiction vs. something that we're passionate about like a certain hobby or activity that is generally a good thing for us. Is there such a thing as a healthy addiction, or is the application of the word "addiction" to any habit only used when it's become harmful to us in some way?

Eric

How might "Sensation and perception, motivated behavior, control of movement, learning and memory" (thanks, Wiki) be related? I'm thinking of the concept of muscle memory, like returning to a physical discipline (that could be addictive, I 'spose) after a long absence. Thanks!

Alex Introini

Are there any proven methods or treatments to rid or cure depression? Is there a fundamental or geneological reason why we have it and why it exists? As someone who has suffered from it my entire life, I wonder if there's more to it than taking meds and "getting over it".

Erin Kelly

Are all psychologists kids just as damaged as I am? Asking for all of us out here! Lol.

Will Gunther

Will there ever be a 'vaccine' for meth or other similar drugs? Or do you think meth too closely mimics the shape of dopamine for it to work?

Craig Curry

I am really interested in the blood/brain barrier. How does it work and how do psychiatric drugs get into the brain?

Rick Ferguson

Regarding sex addiction, what has research determined is mental compared to physical driven issues?

Eibhlín Ni Seanacháin

How real is the placebo effect when prescribed anxiety/depression medication? And are certain meds more associated with this phenomena than others? At least either way our brains are lying to us, for the power of good!

Jessica Starkman

Can you explain Conversion Disorder? It literally makes no sense, on purpose. (Seriously Alie, look it up)

Craig Minami

Do you differentiate an addition to meth or opioids to marijuana in terms their affects on human health and behavior?

Zoe Teplick

Is there any correlation between addiction and anxiety? At what point does my obsessive checking that my door is locked or that I didn’t lose my phone become an addiction?

Shannyn W

(Hope I’m not too late!) Is there a “best way” to switch out a harmful addictive behaviour for something less damaging?

Rebecca Hall

Have you ever had to take drugs to measure their effect on your own brain?
