9th Anniversary of Ologies = a traditional gift of WILLOW = an excuse to meet one of my favorite artists, environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty. I'm attaching some photos of his work below in case you need a visual reference.

I know this one is a lot about his art, but it's my show and anniversary so you'll listen and you'll LIKE IT. Also I did work hard to put a lot of botanical facts and culture into it so no one would yell at me.

Did you listen? What did you think? Should I build a willow hut in my yard? Let's talk below.

Calling the shots,

Your Dad, Alison Ward

Salixology (WILLOWS & SCULPTURE) with Patrick Dougherty - alie ward

It's the Ologies 9th Anniversary episode - and the customary gift is willow. So I reached out to an artist whose work means a lot to me, and convinced world-renowned environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty to chat about his work, and about willows in general.

Willow Huts are the flex you think it is, and I’m stoked to listen to this. Thanks Dad Ward 🫡

I enjoyed this interview. All through, I was wondering whether any of his branches, especially willow resting on the ground, might root, sprout leaves, etc. For some sculptures, I imagine this sprouting might even be welcomed ...

This is why Ologies is amazing. A thing I saw pretty frequently and liked but otherwise didn’t take a ton of notice of gets its own Ology! And Ali and the Ologist are so engaging and fun that I became genuinely interested in the subject. So now I’m going to see that exhibit! When I lived in Durham I used to go to Duke Gardens and I loved the willow hut on the big lawn; I would grab brunch and screw top sparkling wine at the 9th St Whole Foods and spend the morning loafing on my picnic blanket enjoying the sun. But I never really knew anything about the creator of that sculpture and when I started the episode I wondered if Patrick was the creator. That was fun to confirm! Putting Wilmington on my agenda for late November or December so I can go to the museum and see this one!

Oh that's great! If you ever see him, say hello!

Patrick built an installation on my college campus my senior year - University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. It was by the sundial courtyard and was so cool to wander through while walking around! Loved the episode with the artist himself! What about a part 2 to dive into the biology of Salix? I'm also obsessed.

The episode was was interesting AND I listened to its entirety before ever knowing what one of these things looks like—thanks for the email! They are super cool. I think that’s a fine measure of episodic awesomeness.

I absolutely love willows and I loved this episode! I’m also a student at Clemson University and I was so stoked at the shoutout from this Ologist!

Off the actual episode topic but I have to share: I felt strangly seen and specifically called out with the "new phone case" intro on this one as I had just replaced my phone case for the first time in at least 3 years the day before this episode released. I was in fact, not used to it. DadWard sees all. Lovely episode as always ❤️

I haven't listened yet (actually, I'll admit to having a backlog of about 6 months of ologies to listen to, sorry!). But wanted to mention that I always really loved scrolling through people's questions even when it was too late to leave one (or I just didn't have any, and they prompted me to think differently!). Patreon seems to now remove comments from view entirely on older posts, is this fixable? 😞

We had something similar built on Montgomery Alabama Museum grounds. Not sure who erected it but may of us volunteered to cut branches.

I so loved this. I listened from Montana while whittling willow spears with my 8 yo. My bunnies like to nibble on willow limbs and leaves. You inspired me to try building a structure or basket next. Bless the willows.

I super appreciated the felco love in this ep🩷 I went to Wheaton college for a semester in 2011 when his installation “Twisted Sisters” was on campus and I was so excited to listen to your interview with him! Thank you Dadward and happy 9th🎂

Rebecca Roehm

Not a single mention about the medicinal properties of willows!

I finally made the leap & joined the Patreon. Your podcast has made me want to abandon my life-sucking career & grab some higher-ed so that I can become an Oligist. I never went into science because I didn't think I was smart enough, but this podcast reminded me that I CAN and I WILL. Thank you so much! I just love your podcast & how it makes everything interesting!

I was quite literally untangling tangled necklaces chains at the exact moment Dad Ward talked about tangled nots & chains. Ugh

Dog groomer here! Dogs are MUCH worse during a full moon! I can tell if it's a full moon just by the way some of my pups act 🙃

8 ish years ago, I went on a very random trip to Tulsa Oklahoma for a wedding. We stumbled upon a set of these sculptures. As a basket nerd and artist I was so INSANELY PLEASED to encounter them and explore the installation. One of my favorite memories of the trip. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 thank youu for this ep!!
