Treeeeees. Let's get into them.

You may never meet anyone who's as jazzed down to their BONES about their job. Casey Clapp is a Portland-based arborist who is genuinely obsessed with the well-being of trees and it's amazing. He's so warm and knowledgable and earnest and funny and in this episode we talked about trees communicating, crown shyness, his favorite species, weird mascots, tree porn, helpful fungus, plant ESP, the oldest trees and some SUPER SAD TREE STORIES.

Full disclosure: This episode was a beast to make. The interview, raw, was over 2 hours so I tried to condense the most important info and I hope y'all like it. At one point I was hunched over a 38 page printed transcript in a cafe trying to slash through parts with a red pen and then pencil in how to use asides to stitch it together, then transfer all that to a digital doc, and the lovely Steven Ray Morris did a heroic job with all the trims. So much good info, but I didn't want to do another 2-parter right after the double Fear episode.

It's so late and I'm tiiiired as fuuuuq so this is not the wittiest post but I just wanted to say hello and thank you to all of you wonderful patrons for making Ologies possible -- most of the money you contribute goes toward editing and other costs and I just love doing it. So thank you for making it happen. Any ologies you're really itchin' to hear about? Leave em below, fam.

In trees we trust,

Dadward

30 - Dendrology with J. Casey Clapp

Do trees have feelings? How do they talk? How old can they get? Are there any tree stories that will make me cry? Spoiler: YES. Possibly the world's most enthusiastic tree expert, J.

Thanks so much, your hard work is appreciated!

I just finished listening to the audiobook of “Why We Sleep” by sleep scientist (somnologist?) Matthew Walker (@sleepdiplomat on Twitter) and it’s honestly ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT. I also found he was recently a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast and I would love (LOVE) to hear you interview him.

Maxine Angeley

You should do Malacology It’s really interesting and kinda similar to the squid one you did but you could go more in depth to the snail bit. Love the podcast!!

Heather Fargis

Can I leave a list? lol Bibliology would be my #1. The study of books as cultural objects sounds awesome af. After that, felinology, because cats are also awesome af.

Annika Harrison

I would like to hear more about teacherology and then I could be the ologite. Ha! :D No, actually I would love to hear about baby-ology (I'm certain there's a Greek origin-word for that?) because Ologies already covered Sex and OB/Gyn, so it's the next plausible step :D Neurology would be cool, maybe with Dr. Steven Novella? And maybe something like sociology, but concerning traveling patterns? Maybe my ideas are too impractical, I'm sorry :)

This might sound a bit dark, but a forensic pathology episode could be really interesting. (Since we've touched on Thanatology already)

Michael Li

Would love to hear an episode on speleology (the study of caves)!

Mark Donahue

Should have made a separate post asking for ideas. People are clogging the tree post with ideas. Fascinating episode! I’m a crazy horticulture guy so I love all plants including trees.

Mary Lee

This is my favorite episode.
