Interviewing the wonderful dog specialist, Brandon MacMillion, of the show Lucky Dog (he rescues and trains dogs to be adopted out as pets and service animals) and he's won like, 4 Emmys for it.

Leave me questions you have about dogs and dog behavior and I'll ask him as many as I can!

This episode will be so bananas. Also he has warned me that I'm leaving his ranch with a dog, so maybe this episode will get me evicted from my apartment but it will be worth it.

Why do puppies or puppy paws smell so good?

Everest Chamberlain

I have a Lhasa-poo that I adopted from my friend, who also has 3 other dogs. When I go to my friend’s house now and come home smelling like one particular dog that she didn’t get along with, my dog gets so mad at me! Do you think she remembers what a bitch this other dog was?

Is there a meaning behind different tail wags for dogs? For instance is a dog wagging it's tail back and forth different from wagging it's tail to just one side?

Katie Cobb

I know buying a dog from a pet store isn't a great idea because of puppy mills, is it any better buying from a breeder or should we encourage tons of cross breeding and mut making? (Shelter pups ONLY?) I have my faves I aww at on Instagram course, but am I doing a bad thing if I ever get a dog from a breeder?

Michael Shea

Why do my doggo’s paws smell like Fritos?

Evan Simkowitz

Follow up: do they not notice when they are whacking something with their tail or do they just not care?

Michelle Sullivan

Are dogs able to interpret the facial expressions of their humans?

Thomas Pico

I bet this list is going to be long. Why do dogs stare at you constantly? Are they reading your expressions and movements or is it just random. I am curious about my chihuahua. He sheds hair constantly and it never stops throughout the year. They are amazing creatures. I can tell him specifically which toy to go get, his bear or his beaver, and he retrieves the one I ask.

Evan Simkowitz

Also why do dogs tolerate getting their tail pulled more than cats?

Jessica Bomgardner

Where are we on the dog thoughts collar technology from the Disney movie "Up"? This is probably a stretch but omg what if...

Megan Younce

My boyfriend says "dogs are ALWAYS boys" hahah

Tobias Milton

Are dogs more typically intelligent, or do they follow a behaviour pattern?

radishcake yarns & fibers

Why do dogs lick everything? Is there some different information conveyed? Since their sense of smell is SUPER accute I always wonder why they lick stuff. Also do they see in a range that we can’t? I know they are colour blind (ish?) but maybe I don’t know that. Are they true colour blind?

Beth Frausto

Do dogs get anxiety disorders? If so, is it a result of nature or nurture?

Liana Moss

Why do some breeds have the reputations that they have? Like German shepherds, rottweilers, Dobermans, pitbulls, etc? I’ve met so many more vicious small breeds. Come to think of it, what makes a dog vicious? Is it nature or nurture? Can one overcome the other?

Alissa and Barbara Rouse

Why are humans so obssessed with dogs? I have nothing against dogs, but I just... Don't get it.

Cat Degen

Why do dogs always smell your crotch? Is it the height? Is it the smell?

Emily Barnett

What senses do dogs primarily rely on when they recognise us? E.g. sight/scent/does context play a role?

Christa Avampato

GAHHHHHHHH! He is my absolute favorite and I love his show. He's helped me so much with my dog. This is so exciting. My two question about dogs: 1.) what are the best ways to keep our senior dogs mentally healthy. I've heard a lot of about something similar to canine dementia and wondering how I can keep my senior pup's mind active, similar to the advice we get that doing crossword puzzles and continually learning is helpful for us as we age. 2.) My dog has some anxiety issues and I've done a lot of work with him training-wise. Someone recently recommended melatonin supplements as a way to aid the training work I do with him. Wondering if Brandon has ever used melatonin with any of his dogs and has he seen it be successful. Thanks, Alie! I'm bonkers excited about this episode!!

Hilarie Mazur

How are some dogs able to detect cancer or other medical conditions?

Mikey

What did we do to deserve dogs? And a few serious follow ups. Why do dogs become depressed? I’ve heard of people giving their dogs antidepressants when this happens. Does it help? Is it good for them?

iolanthe

Tell me everything about how therapy dogs work. Also my dog is weird and anxious and he refuses to 'do his business' in our backyard, he will only ever shit down the street. It's like he's embarrassed or polite. What could it be?

iolanthe

Was domesticating dogs cruel?

Jeffrey Katz

Love Brandon and watch every week. I always wondered how he can afford to do what he does.

Emily Barnett

Are dog mental health issues (e.g. anxiety) more prevalent these days, or are we just getting better at recognising them?

Mark Williams

A dog rescuer some years ago said that domesticated dogs can still kill other animals but have forgotten how to kill for food, and so stray dogs depend on scavenging to get by. Could your guest perhaps confirm that? I haven't found any other source.

kitingmare

Should I get a dog while living in an appartment? I am thinking about adopting a dog from a shelter but have concerns that I can't give him/her the proper care/living situation even if I have a nice park near my home. Is it still a stePUP from a life in the shelter? Do you have some sort of checklist for a potential new owner?

LateNitePie

What do dogs understand about humans? This could be a weird question though, because dogs can't speak.

LateNitePie

Who is a good boy? (sorry)

Anthony Stull

Why do dog's feet smell like corn chips?

Laura Mulligan

Why are dogs always ready to just party?

Adam Samons

I love dogs, but nobody I know loves them more than my boss, who I messaged for question ideas. Here's what she sent me. 1. Do dogs have feelings? 2. What's the best way to cure a dog of anxiety? 3. Do my dogs talk back to me in their head when I speak to them? 4. What do dogs dream about?

Jack Kelleher

Why do German shepherds and golden retrievers make such excellent guide dogs?

Jen Durbin

How do seizure dogs detect seizures, and how are they trained for that?

Mary Kay Zolezzi

Dogs vs. Cats...love them both, but our three labs will do anything to cuddle on the couch next to us, while my daughter's cat prefers her own company. Please explain! Also, if you haven't seen it, check out Cat Friend vs. Dog Friend on YouTube:)

Emily Barnett

One time my dog didn’t recognise my dad because he was wearing a Hawaiian shirt! He was barking and growling at him until he came back with a jumper on over it.

John Worster

What is a dogs dew claw used for? Or is it something that is just a leftover from evolution?

Alexis Rivard

What do you think of Cesar Milan? What do dogs dream about? Do dogs get bored of having the same food every day like a person would? How does my dog know when I'm having an anxiety attack? (She always acts different when I am and lays with me until our breathing matches and I've calmed down which she normally never does... she's not a super cuddly dog.)

Jen Durbin

What are your thoughts on people registering their dogs as emotional support animals just to be able to take their dogs anywhere?

Jen Durbin

How do airlines manage allowing service dogs on planes with people who have severe dog allergies?

Charlotte Davis

Sorry kind of a gross question. Why does my dog eat his and my other dog's poop? I've tried a couple different kinds of coprophagia pills but he still eats it! Thankfully he's not a dog that likes to lick faces!

Anna Marie

I just need confirmation that my dog knows I love her! She totally knows, right?

Stu

Hypothetically speaking, how large a property, how many helpers and how much money would I need to have all of the dogs? Asking for a friend.

Dave Miller, PhD

is the use of emotional support dogs/animals being abused?

Jessica Bomgardner

My first thought was wtf. My second thought was to test it.

Shelby Martin

How early in the domestication process did humans begin selecting for more juvenile morphologic traits (i.e., smaller body size, remaining playful and dependent on humans, etc.) and in what way(s) has this selection altered the dog genome?

Anthony Stull

Did you test it out? This has been the case with every one of my dogs

Rosemary

Why are some breeds more aggressive than others? Is it primarily nature or nurture?

Jill Kerswill

Can dogs really have happy & healthy lives if they spend the majority of their time indoors? (I.e. people who live in apartments) or we are just kidding ourselves to rid us of our guilt?

Laura Mulligan

When I play my accordion or banjo, my boxer howls and woowoos. Is this hurting her ears or is she singing or displaying empathy? I've read all of these as reasons on different websites and different books and don't know which to believe. Am I hurting my dogs ears by playing these instruments?

Logan Buie

Can a dog that's previously bitten another dog ever learn to have fellow dog friends? What is the best way to socialize and train a dog out of this type of aggression?

Logan Buie

Also: I've heard that it's a sign of stress/anxiety when dogs chase their tails. Is this true? Or is it just boredom?

Julie Victoria

Are there certain breeds make the best service animals? If there are, which breeds are the most difficult to train? Also, girl... get yourself a pup!

Nelson Chan

Why can dogs as one species, bred to be so distinctly different, so many variation? Cats are bred just as much as dogs by human, but they are not as physically distinct and as wide a spectrum as dogs are among breeds.

Christopher Barley

The ultimate question, why do dogs sometimes eat their own (and other animals) poop while we all look on in disgust.

Christa Avampato

And one more! I've read some research that suggests dogs have an adolescence that's not all that different from our own rebellious teenage years. Is that true?

Emily Barnett

Interested to know his opinion on Cesar too! I personally think he’s a poo bag and his presence on tv does so much damage :(

Maxine Angeley

Why does my dog steal tissue paper out of the garbage and eat it? Specifically tissue paper nothing else really... clean and dirty. It's very puzzling.

Hannah Silverman

I adopted my male dog at 10months and got him fixed shortly after. He has no idea what lifting his leg is all about. He just stands and pees. He doesnt even squat. It always gets on his front feet. He watches his adopted brother pee and lifts his leg a little sometimes, but doesnt lean out so he still pees on himself. How can I train him to not pee on himself?

Emily Barnett

Why do some male dogs lift their leg to pee while others squat?

Bob

Well... Who IS a good boy?

Stefan Titus

Do dogs from different countries have different accents? Are barks different in different places?

Bob

Some advice on moderating barking please. (we have a Sheltie that is living up to the proclivity)

Heather Stratford

We have a dog boarding with us as he goes through guide dog training. He's had his training extended a couple of times and is now very settled with us. When he eventually moves on to his forever home, will he miss us? How long do dogs remember previous owners?

Liam Chavez

Could you please explain how canine eyesight works? I've heard that they see things in hues of red but I can't remember if it was from a credible source or not (confirmation would be lovely).

Emily Barnett

All of my dogs have had an uncanny ability to detect the presence of tissues in pockets...

Mark Larsen

What is the real origin of the pug breed?

Tristin Casselberry

Is there a way to get a submissive dog to stop peeing all over the place when they get scared? Our dog is part dachshund.

Mike Melchior

Why do (at least some) dogs desire to rub themselves on dead animals, roadkill, etc. ?

The Project Project

Why are some breeds smarter than others? Is there a genetic reason, or are we just anthropomorphizing this? Also, how awesome are flop-eared mutt doggos, I mean REALLY?

Megan C.

My 2 females can't seem to decide who's the boss so they occasionally get into "bitch fits." Any way to combat this?

James

Are most dogs really content being someone's (relatively) tiny friend-slave?

The Foxes

I have a husky mix who seems to have a wide range of emotions from exuberance at the prospect of walks or dog park visits to melancholic torpor on a rainy day. Are these authentic emotions or I'm just projecting mine on his behavior?

The Foxes

My male dog immediately identifies the un-neutered dog at the dog park and tries to establish hierarchy with him. Mine always approaches submissively but if the other doesn't act alpha, mine gets upset. If the other does, mine backs off. What's happening?

Emily Suggs

I lost my good girl “Dixie Dean” almost 3 years ago, and I’m still pissed off about it. She died of IMHA, which is apparently really common, but I’d never heard of it. I had just moved with her cross-country, then she got really weak and sick, and I put her down 30 data later. I still don’t really understand what IMHA is, and if there’s anything I did wrong to cause it (stress from the move? Extreme South Texas heat?). Could I have done anything to keep her going, or is IMHA a terminal diagnosis? (Remember, we’re not all Barbra Streisand with gagillions of dollars just lying around to spend on our dogs...although I would’ve totally cloned Dixie if I could afford that.)

Emily Suggs

*days not data ^^^ Apologies!

That's Weird

What do dogs dream about when they're making those cute little whines in their sleep?

Matty Sallin

When we take a picture of what looks like a dog smiling, are they actually smiling, or anything of the sort? If not, why are humans the only animals that smile?

Rage on Raglan

I would love to hear more about the use of canines in sniffing out things like cancer, seizers, etc. Thanks!

SimplyOli

Why do dogs bodies get warm when you show them lots of affection? Both my dogs will immediately emit heat from the tops of their heads or their necks.

Reuben Clamzo

My wife and I adopt and foster rescue racing greyhounds. We don't apporve of or endorse dog racing, but we're extremely attached to these 40 mph couch potatoes. (Sidenote Alie, they make excellent apartment dogs) When racing finally ends, we'd still like to live with greyhounds. Do the greys that are NOT bred for racing have the same temperment and requirements? What about the other sight hounds? P.S. We'd love to hear the name of our dog, Flying Onion, on the air. That was his racing name and he knew it when he chose us.

Devonshire

(Hello Alie Ward! You're the greatest! First time Patroning long time podcaster). Do we know yet whether humans domesticated dogs, or dogs domesticated humans? Was it an evolutionarily symbiotic relationship? Or did we selfishly enslave them or did they cunningly enslave us? (Thanks again for your kick ass pod <3).

Hilary Blake

Both my dogs are rescue, one from a bag on the side of the road the other from the pound. Given that we can only guess at their history, is there anything I need to know to make sure I take the best care of them?

Julie Noble

I’m not sure why, as I have cats and do not play the accordion or the banjo, but I love this question and absolutely need to know the answer to it.

Sara Ebberts

I have a 17 year old Dachshund who has recently, like within the last 3 months, become increasingly incontinent. He isn't sick and I don't want to discipline him since he's so old. I don't think this is a discipline problem. Is there anything I should or shouldn't be doing to help mitigate this issue for him and my carpet? And also my furniture because he's even peed in his sleep a couple of times , poor little man.

Angela Fedler

Since dogs' noses are more powerful than humans, do human smells, like scented candles, really irritate them?

Angela Fedler

I have a greyhound that rolls around with her legs in the air, turning side to side, doing what looks like to me as scratching her back on the carpet. I've been told this is called roaching and means that she is content and happy. What's really going on?

Sara Ebberts

P.S.(to go with the previous question) We also have 2 little girls ages 6 & 8. They want so badly to play with Darby The Dachshund, but he is NOT having that shit. Would it be traumatic for him if we got another dog at this point? I've been thinking about maybe adopting a greyhound from a local rescue group...

Stefan Titus

How long between an action and a reward can dogs associate the action with the reward?

Sara Ebberts

My dachshund used to do this when he heard opera, or anything close to it; like on a commercial or something. He doesn't do it anymore, but he's really old. So, either he can't hear it as well or just got used to it. I don't really know.

Sara Ebberts

Maybe this is a doxie thing. I have a dachshund and have known quite a few and this tends to be a thing with them.

Sara Ebberts

I have a 17 yr old dachshund and sometimes he seems fine and sometimes I think he has dementia. How do can you even tell if your dog has dementia? Alie, Christa's questions are great and deff need to be answered.

Christa Avampato

Sara, 17 years old! How amazing! My little guy will be 9 in September. I hope I have him as long as you have had your pup. I'm so sorry he's showing the signs of mentally aging. Has your veterinarian been at all helpful about this? I'm wondering if there might be some kind of cognitive test they can give to dogs.

Maren Mossman

Question from Sean and Maren Mossman: Are some breeds harder to train than others or just some dogs are harder to train than others?

K.J. Listening

What is the deal with dogs and bathroom time- People bathroom time. My dog has always wanted on my lap when I'm in the bathroom...doing what one does. If allowed to sit on my lap my doggo gets really chill and almost falls asleep. I've heard that cats and dogs want to be close during this special time, but why?

Sasha Chihak

Hi Allie, I'm a huge fan of the podcast and a student of science communication so if you ever feel like becoming a mentor, I volunteer as tribute! I feel like canine breeding (or inbreeding) has resulted in some very unusual traits. Some of this practice has resulted in a breed being more prone to certain negative health effects. Are there any safeguards in place to reduce or prevent further breeding (or inbreeding) of animals who are then born into a world to struggle through significant health concerns? Also, picture this; all humans disappear from the face of the planet (I'm not sure how but insert your preferred apocalypse scenario and we'll be good)....how long would it take for dogs to revert to their wild behaviors? Would some breeds be more easily adapted to revert to their wild-selves? Which breeds would likely disappear entirely and why? Sorry if that got too dark. Hope you have a great day!

Emma Fiori

What is your favorite fictitious dog character?

Brooke Danielle

What happens to dogs on planes, especially in the cargo hold area? My mom wants to take her older dog with her when she travels because kennels make him sick, but she's worried the plane will be even worse.

Ashley Semrick

This happened to my old girl - she's got the diabetes, turns out. Insulin it is! Have your vet test blood sugar.

Jenna Ericson

I don’t know if I’m too late for this question... I have celiac and have read about celiac support dogs who can smell trace amounts gluten (like cross contamination amounts) hidden in otherwise “gluten free” food. Is this just some bogus trick? Is it even possible for dogs to smell that? Am I just, like, gonna have to dream that a dog can tell me not to eat certain things in certain places? And if it is possible, does that mean it’ll be possible to train dogs for other major food things like peanut allergies, etc?

Kira Lichtenfeld

Are dogs really chasing rabbits in their dreams? My new puppy dreams more than any dog I have ever seen - growling, barking, jerking, whining. What's he imagining?

Jen Anderson

Hope I'm not too late.. My dog licks his paws like crazy. Like till they're bald. We've checked and it's nothing medical. We've tried thunder vests and wipes but he just keeps on keeping on. What's the deal?

Euan Munro

Is it true that dogs are more or less in a constant state of anxiety, especially when their family are not with them? I heard it was an evolutionary benefit as it made humans want to keep them around, but it makes me sad to hear that's what life if like inside their little doggo heads.

Matthew

Which diseases can dogs and humans catch from each other?
