How do Egyptologists make sense of the way ancient Egyptians regarded time, particularly in determining the specific ages of historic sites like the pyramids? Seems like they did not really document things by "years" or in a real metric sort of way? How did Egyptologists decipher which rulers were real versus fictional?

Irene B

Christopher Royce

Hi Alie! I am wondering if Dr. Cooney has any thoughts on why mummies are almost always depicted in pop culture as villainous monsters–how come they never come to life and help people out or solve crimes?

SHELLS please interview a CONCHOLOGIST - i have SO MANY QUESTIONS--love your podcast, ali. thanks so much!

Meaghan Walsh Gerard

Setting aside the wilder "ancient aliens" stuff, is there any evidence that ancient Egyptians were more advanced than we realize? For example, they had learned to harness steam power but that knowledge got lost and we had to "reinvent" it.

Dain Goding

How common were "mummy unwrapping parties" in Victorian England? Is there any estimate of how many mummies were lost due to mummy parties or as use in dye or simply destroyed by looters, compared to how many have been preserved?

Zeke Sikelianos

We got some kids books from the library about how the pyramids were constructed, but none of them mentioned the hardships endured by the people who built them. Weren't these workers essentially enslaved?

Valerie Jane

How ridiculous is the opening scene of 1987's Mannequin? Oh my gosh, it's terrible, right? But also, why do I kind of love it too? Help!

Rebecca

Does Orientalism still affect the field?

What is your speculation as to why some pharaoh's "disappeared" from archaeological and written records after their death? Such as Hatsheput or Akhenaten? Is there a consistency to it, just to record what the next pharaoh is accomplishing, or does it seem directed at those who make significant impacts?

Jessica Starkman

Is there *any* possibility that the biblical exodus actually happened?

Olaf Doschke

Whenever an ex boss didn't know something he said "Egypt?". That became something of a synonym for not knowing anything - and annoying, especially, if he should. One birthday I bought him a book about Egypt - that ended it.

Elizabeth Bassett

I think I remember a book as a kid that talks about people (Victorians, maybe?) eating or ingesting Egyptian mummies or mummy parts. Was this a thing? Why? How widespread? And have any other cultures consumed OTHER mummies? Did anyone eat any peat bog mummies?!
