Soooo, victimology is a subset of criminology and it's:

the study of the victims of crime and the psychological effects on them of their experience.

the possession of an outlook, arising from real or imagined victimization, that seems to glorify and indulge the state of being a victim.

Questions in the comments and I'll get to as many as I can! Also ready your ears for Tuesday's episode about EGGGGGGGS.

Tyler Q

Are there truly any victimless crimes?

Aki

Is there such a thing as a fashion victim?

Jennifer Dorsett

I'm interested in the trauma portion of being victimized, and how that can be passed on generationally; think holocaust, slavery, or even just migration or political upheaval. Do these things affect/effect future generations in a way that is beyond just the cultural?

Not-Poignant/Pia Foxhall

Are we seeing increased onset of media-induced or media-catalysed PTSD? We know since 9/11 that some developed post-trauma symptoms from media footage alone.

Not-Poignant/Pia Foxhall

What is something you wished more people understood about victims of crime? Or people with crime-related post-trauma? Is there something more we can do for our loved ones, beyond asking them how we can help?

Bob White

What is the reasoning behind all the people playing victim because their choices didn’t get elected? Their lives haven’t changed in any measurable way yet the whining is incessant.(no, I didn’t vote for the clown)

Alyssa Bean

How often does revenge/justice actually help a victim? Psychologically or otherwise

Greg

What tangible outcomes have resulted from victimology studies? Because so much of the data can come from government and law enforcement agencies who might not be willing to share or don't necessarily collect information about victims, how difficult is it for victimologists to complete studies and further research?

Forrest Stotts

In cases where an actual trauma is not present, what are the most common ways that PTSD can arise? Personally, growing up gay in a conservative Christian household has led to quite a battle with PTSD-like symptoms. In non-trauma based PTSD, what are some of the therapies that have led the most promising results?

Bader AlShawaf

How do we approach those we feel are victims of a certain act or crime, without scaring them off or pushing them away?

CT

What are your thoughts on Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG)? Do you think it is too invalidating of victims’ experiences or do you think it is important in furthering our understanding of how we can help facilitate the healing process for victims?

Aki

Is there any truth to victims of abuse as children seeking similar abuse as adults?

Tyler

Why do people in abusive relationships often struggle to end the relationship despite obvious signs that it just ain't working?

Evilh

Is Stockholm Syndrome a real If so is it something that can happen to victims generally or just hostage-type situations?

Heather Hutchison

I live in Parkland Fl and although my kids had already graduated from MSD, I know they were deeply affected, as was I and a lot of the community. How can you cope with effects of something you were not directly involved with?

Sean & Josh Grandinetti

Does the humble-brag have anything to do with the desire to be a victim?

Jack Kelleher

Has being a victim changed your view on punishment and or the judicial system overall?

Liam Chavez

Why do some victims of crime and abuse start to believe that it's their fault that the people who hurt them did so? I have PTSD from childhood abuse and still struggle with the occasional bout of feeling like I deserved to be treated the way I was (e.g. feeling like I was too sensitive or being ungrateful). I'm working hard on my recovery and trying to break this habit though!

Zoe Elewitz

We have learned a lot about PTSD In the last few decades. How much more do we have to learn, or rather how complete is our understanding of PTSD?

Thomas Pico

I am always interested in trial by jury. How has the idea of being tried by a trial by jury hindered the testimony of victims.

Joyclyn Vincent

Does the prominence of vigilantism/revenge fantasy in pop culture (i.e. every superhero movie/show) have an impact on how real victims think about their situation?

Claire Biddiscombe

What are your thoughts on the use of the term "survivor" instead of "victim"?

John Worster

What is the best way for a person to help a friend, who has been a victim of a crime? Saying that you're sorry that it happened, just doesn't seem to be enough.

Rebecca Stefulj

Why do people who have been abused seem to find their way into the hands of terrible people again and again?

Becca Bee

Is there a way to undo the effects without the drugs/tons of therapy? Being diagnosed with PTSD from an abusive relationship and constantly feeling like a prisoner of the past ... Am I doomed to think/live like a victim forever?

Kayla Pugh

Is there a better, more encompassing term for "survivors" of sexual abuse and assault? As a survivor myself, I've done a lot more than just make it out alive. It's a whole lifetime of work and healing and struggle and I don't feel the term survivor really sums it all up.

Aryn

What is it about Nazis, incels, MRAs, [etc. etc.] that make them believe they are victims? How can we wake them up? (If that's even possible...lord knows I personally don't have the patience for it, but heaps of blessings~ for whoever does! I feel like they're in their own little bubble and any indication of coaxing them out of that bubble is met with visceral abjection.)

Sukaina IW

How are victims who don't trust the system to help them (i.e. gender based violence survivors, people of colour, undocumented folks) expected to heal? Are there specific organizations/an area of study specifically for them?

Lisa Tang

What advice would you give a victim of crime for how to move on?

Christopher Barley

I am curious why extremely traumatic events seem so hard to forget/pervasive as years go by. Does the brain re-route neural pathways for victims of extreme events so that every day memories get routed through the traumatic event first? I.e. you are trying to remember where you put your scissors but your brain re-routes that signal first through the traumatic event and then to where you put the scissors.

Emma Fiori

What's the deal with rape fantasies? I know it's supposed to be all about giving up control, but it seems like there's got to be something more than that. Do rape victims/ survivors ever fantasize about their rape?

Emma Fiori

I'd really love to hear about this too!

Rachel von Morrigan

What can we do to stop the criminal from receiving what seems to be praise and glory as well as a media spotlight, while the victims/survivors get very little attention and, sometimes, even blame?

Anna Mc

Why is victim-blaming a cultural epidemic? Have we seen a rise in this in recent years?

Kelli Brockington

Is Stockholm Syndrome a thing? Can someone who is kidnapped really start to feel for the kidnappers? Also - is it a prevalent thing or has movies & tv really blown it out of proportion? Have people really suffered from it - such as Patty Hearst?

Elspeth

I don't have a question but I SO WISH I DID I just can't think of anything that hasn't already been asked waaaaa!!!! Excited for this episode!!

Charlotte Milling

It seems that it's becoming apparent, at least anecdotally, that post-9/11 veterans with combat-related PTSD can create an environment in which their spouses and children become victims of the litany of problems associated with PTSD (e.g., substance abuse, fits of rage, flashbacks, etc.). How much research has been conducted to explore the psychology, treatment, and progress of these second-hand trauma sufferers? What advice would you give the people in these roles who are confronted with trying to support someone they love who is battling a disease that is NOT their fault but still creates a toxic environment for everyone living with them? Straight up asking for myself.

Colette Ayers

Where did the term “don’t play the victim” come from? And has this become part of a culture of victim blaming?

Natasha Bharj

Do you think there are ways the criminal justice system can become more empowering for victims? E.g. reparative justice, victim input into sentencing? Alternatively, are there dangers to involving victims in punishment (for both victim & accused)?

Jessica Williams

When someone reveals that they have been a victim. What is the best way that I can be supportive, and not end up using cliches?

Maria Kumro

What do you think is the best way to change societal assumptions that a victim/potential victim is the one that should be responsible for preventing a crime but we do nothing to train potential perpetrators to not commit the crime? Such as in rape and sexual assaults.

Keith T

I am currently training to become a police officer - I will be dealing with people who are the victims of crimes often. What are some of the more important steps I can follow or traits to display to lessen the negative effects of being victimized?

Jilly

What are the differences in victimization of a group vs an individual?

Not-Poignant/Pia Foxhall

I want this to be answered too, but you might want to look into transgenerational trauma in the meantime (it has a Wiki page), because this phenomenon is *well* documented (particularly re: the Holocaust and people who experienced WWII), as a real thing. It's not often called second-hand or secondary trauma, so much as multi-generational or transgenerational trauma. I mean I hope your question gets asked, but if it doesn't, you have some good places to start off from with the right terminology. :)

Matthew

Victims of sexual abuse often grow up to become perpetrators themselves. What can be done to help the perpetrators to break this cycle (aside from/in addition to punishment and incarceration)?

Charlotte Milling

Holy moly. In all the books I've read and the pamphlets the VA has shoved at me and the hours I've spent in counseling, I have NEVER seen or heard of that condition. I just looked it up on Google Scholar, and you're right -- the research is everywhere, and it's recently (since Vietnam) focused on exactly what I'm experiencing! It would still be great for this question to be answered on air because I know I am one child among so, so many coping with this issue, and once we're grown, we DO NOT RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM THE DOD OR THE VA!!!!!!! Being able to name a condition and having the validation that it's real is a big first step in beginning to move forward. A million times -- thank you!

Olivia Milloway

I’m wondering how maybe victim complexes can impact society's view of the crime and perpetrators of that crime? I’m thinking specifically of how impactful and damaging just one false rape accusation can be to an entire movement.

Stephanie Roach

How much does perceived safety/security or lack there of effect a victim? Such as after a home is robbed. Or in the case of if a victim is willing to testify in court.

Matthew

Can you talk about Munchausen syndrome?

Olivia Findlay

Is it narcissistic to take things personally? Let's say someone is having a bad day and they're getting mad at lots things but mostly themselves and they are creating a tornado of negative energy and emotion around them and they might not actually be mad at you because of something you did but they are mad and it feels like they are mad at you. Is it wrong and selfish to take this stuff personally and get upset about it?

Cynthia Bartz

When I was in college, I was mugged at gun point. Thankfully everyone came out of the situation unharmed and only purses were taken. After that incident, 2 of the girls went home (like got on a plane and flew half way across the country home). One girl locked herself in her apartment for 2 weeks. And then there was me. I continued to go to class and go about my life. I did have more caution walking the campus at night, but was otherwise "life as usual". I think I felt secure in knowing that it happened off-campus, and was not likely to happen again soon. Why did we have such different reactions to the same event? Should I have felt more victimized/insecure? What can I do to raise my children to have a strong constitution, and ability to process "bad things" in a healthy way? Or how can I teach children to not allow fear of past experiences rule their future?
