We’re baaaack! It's a new episode with author, speaker and Thanatologist and dear friend Cole Imperi. Days after my dad’s passing, we sat on a street corner and talked about grief, mourning, meaning, and moving forward. Then the second half is me solo info dumping all the great advice and wisdom I’ve been given as my family navigated hospice and loss. I thought I’d share the things I learned in case it helps anyone else who loves someone with a terminal illness, who has lost someone, is just afraid of death in general, or needs motivation to get your own will/funeral plan together. (Looking at…all of us.)

Thank you so much for all of the support. You will never fully understand how much it means to me. Hope you enjoy this one – it’s raw but earnest. ❤️

Hugs, high fives and thank yous,

Your Dadward VonPodcast

You deserve all the love. You were there for us during tough ass times. And we’re here. Take as much time as you need. 💕

Frederick Raymond-Coursol

We’re all here for you Alie ❤️ also I can’t wait to listen to the episode while working tomorrow

Listening to this and crying with you both! I lost my mom in 2017 to ALS, then her sister to the same in 2021. This is helping me tons. Love to you both!

Helpful Thankyou 🫶

Not me holding back tears at work because of your willingness to be open and earnest during this worst time of your life and the send off and knowing what it meant. You're going to be amazing at helping your friends navigate future losses since literally days after your loss you were like "yeah this will help other people" Also I listened to the otters episode late, after seeing the news of your dad's death, and he asks a question on it. I thought it was wonderful that he'll always have those little pockets where he asked questions or inspired a train of thought. He's memorialized in so many of your episodes. Ok going to go now and stop babbling to my poddad now. I have a committee zoom to pay attention to!

Stu

Hope you're doing ok Alie, big hugs!

I lost my grandma, my other parent who I lived with until I was 14, about 4 or 5 years ago now when I was 25-ish (don't like to do the math on this one), it has gotten easier but that's a painful statement to make cuz it still hurts so much, I have not been able to listen to episodes for quite a few months now because I've been in a bit of a depression/sad space and that pains me but I'm excited to finally get to listen to the backlog and hear this when I'm able to take it in

This was released on the one week anniversary of my dad's death. Listened driving home from the funeral. What a gift. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for inviting us along on your journey.

Brie

i just lost my grandma to Alzheimer’s a week or so ago - hoping this helps. She was diagnosed in 2005 so she lived with it for a long time but it still hurts.

Micki Colbeck

Will listen tomorrow. Really needing some guidance after losing my husband and partner in crime two years ago. Been feeling just not right since then. Thanks for making me laugh when things go shitty. Micki

Oh Alie!!! I am so immensely grateful to you for a million reasons and this episode is another one on this very long and ever-growing list. Sending you a giant virtual hug from NYC!

Connie Snow

I cried in the grocery store listening to this episode. It was beautiful.

Thank you, and thanks to Cole. So much about this episode was.... a relief, somehow? Knowing what to expect and what's normal during grieving is oddly reassuring. I held it together for most of the episode, somehow. The story about Cole's dogs and the Morse code at the end, though 😭.

Sleepy John

Thanobotanical Plants sounds like a Wednesday Addams tribute band. Take care, Alie.

I'm new to the podcast and to the patreon, so I haven't gotten to know you and your dad very well yet (through the podcast, I don't want to sound like a stalker. 😂) but I am sending so much love your way and to your family. Just from the handful of episodes I've listened to I can tell how special he was to you and everyone around him. Thank you for sharing your journey and helping others along the way. I haven't listened to this episode yet, but I can already tell it will be a beautiful and meaningful one. Lots of love and hugs. 💖

Hello! I absolutely adore your podcast! I love learning about anything and everything and your podcast quenches my thirst for knowledge. I listen to you on my way to work, as I do some ZenDoodles, and on my many hot girl mental health walks. Some of my favorite episodes include Crystals, Butterflies, Sleep, and anything space related. Every time I look up at the stars, I think of Space Junk, Aliens, and UfoS. (The aliens probably DO lock their cars as they zoom by). I wish more people took the time to stare up at the stars and just marvel at our world. And of course, I have a special place in my heart for the Death episode, because it really did help me make peace with the fact that I dont NEED a purpose in this life. I will continue looking up at the stars, always filled with wonder for the world I live in and just enjoy being. Stay strong and crazy creative !

What a great episode, thank you for posting it Alie. I had to stop myself from tearing up a few times whilst in the car. Sending lots of love and thoughts to you and the fam. Ologies has helped me through many rough times, we'll all be here for you if you need us. Also I read the eulogy, incredibly beautiful and touching. Grandpod lived a great life and you are living proof. Take care Alie and thanks for sharing your dad's story.

Allison Holloway

Thank you for this episode. My mom lost her mom in a similar way recently, and I have shared this with her with the hope it does as much for her as it has for me. (And then I shared it with everyone else I know, for the same reason.) This episode is a gift. You are a gift.

Paulina Krasińska-Sroka

You're absolutely, undeniably amazing, PodDad! To be going through loss and grief, and think "Yeah, I'm gonna make an episode out of this!" is beyond belief. We don't deserve you. Sending much love 💕

Claire Nurc

Thanks for this one. I lost my Dad 2 years ago and still have a lot of guilt over the last few days of his life. Hoping this pod will give some closure but also better prepare me to accompany family members in future. Take care and thank you for your generosity in this terribly difficult time

Spencer Parks

I'm not gonna lie. I got a little teary eyed. But I have a feeling I'm in the minority and most people bawled at some point in this episode.

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

I had to stop listening this morning because I was putting makeup on. I'm going to listen to the rest after work at home where I can cry and look like a sad raccoon. I'm so glad you have Cole during this time. We all love our PodDad so much!♥️♥️♥️

I'm not completely finished with the episode, but wanted to say how much the different dimensions of grief resonated with me. I lost my much-beloved grandfather recently after a long illness (sidenote: the anticipatory grief in this situation was SO hard; I really appreciated the acknowledgment of this as well.) I've never been a particularly emotional griever and always felt vaguely broken because of that, so hearing that there's all these ways to grieve made me feel less alone.

I haven't listened to this yet, but my heart missed a beat when I saw the topic. I just lost my oldest son to suicide eleven days ago. I'm heartbroken and the grief takes my breath away at unexpected moments. I'm hoping to find some insights in the episode to help me through.

Holly

I saw your comment and I just wanted to tell you my heart goes out to you. I hope this episode gave you comfort. ❤️

Just wanted to say I appreciate the ologies show, enjoy listening and admire how helpful the openness and honesty is. And the funny stuff. Thank you

Morgan

This was a beautiful episode that I made the mistake of listening to at work. No one should be crying while getting to feed wolves, but here I am. Thank you for this cursed gift

Roxanne Cheng

So lovely to have Cole Imperi back on the show. Felt she had so much more to share after the 2017 talk. Thanks so much for doing a followup!

Years after the sudden and traumatic loss of my love, Even though I was with a new person had two kids and a dog.. every May 15 I would feel the tug of pain. I was getting pneumonia so often that I forgot what a regular cough felt like. I did three years of intense acupuncture (as grief is apparently held in the lungs in Chinese medicine),and therapy to learn how to let go. I feel like a different person, I can say his name (Ian) and can think about him with joy.. Also as a plus, I don’t get pneumonia anymore. I picked up a camera to seek out things that make me happy(normally underwater critters), drawing, and gardening. Such a beautiful episode, and rewarding for all who hear it. Sorry about your father, he sounded spectacular, I’ll keep posting critters for him.❤️

Kristin Little

I'm currently going through loss and this has helped me so much! You both fucking rock! thank you.

Becki Planck

Ugh thank you so much for the episodes I didn't know I needed xx my mother in law passed last year and just before the anniversary my husband has now been diagnosed with chronic leukaemia. You have no idea how helpful these are xxx

Brenden O'Donnell

I listen to every new episode but have been avoiding this one, without knowing why. I finally tricked myself into listening to it by going for a run, and I realized that I’ve been avoiding working through some of my feelings about my grandpa’s death a few months ago (running away from it, literally!). It was such a beautiful experience and provided a lot of comfort and humor — thank you! I’m so impressed by your bravery in putting all of these experiences out there. You’re helping people. 💙💚💛❤️🧡💜

I cried through this whole episode. Thank you Alie and Cole for sharing this and spreading healing. Big hugs to everyone out there grieving (which is likely everyone). ❤️

❤️❤️❤️ I lost my father to suicide. Sending you so much love.

The Morse code just sent me too. ❤️😭

Such a great episode, and sincere condolences to you and your family - but also sincere Cheers 🍻 to your amazing candor throughout your experiences. You rule so hard. 🤘

Boy oh boy, this one hit home. I lost my younger brother to cancer this year and felt so connected through the pain we all suffer after such a significant loss. I'm oddly comforted knowing that each and every one of us walks through life with this burden... and looooved the advice to approach each individual as if they were suffering from a loss. Loads of love to you ladies for this magnificent episode.

Maureen Kennedy

Your Grief episodes have been so helpful to me, having lost myDad unexpectedly in January, and finding out we will probably lose our “baby” (50 on Halloween) brother sooner than we want thanks to Stage 4 Glioblastoma found in May. As siblings we are each dealing in our own way - we each know what we need. My concern is my sick brother, who refuses to face his diagnosis and the probability of death sooner than later. Won’t talk about it, won’t let us help him settle things (he has no wife but three amazing kids) like a will, etc. I’d love to hear from Cole about her thoughts on helping my brother - or do we not? I understand we all grieve differently but we are finding this makes our grieving even harder.
