Do you have one thousand questions about millipedes? LEAVE THEM BELOW. We will make you love millipedes.

Also: if I've never said your name on the show, add a ** before your question or a first time question asker note, and if I've said it wrong lemme know!

Can you die from a millipede’s bite? Are they all poisonous or just some? Why are they so dangerous but so small?

Greg Walloch

Do millipedes actually keep growing if they get cut in half or lose limbs?

Hailey

What is the evolutionary benefit of having so many legs? Is there not a point of diminishing returns from an energy perspective when you have to grow and operate so many? What does 300 legs give them that 200 couldn’t? ** (also asked a question on the Mars post so not sure if this counts as first time)

G.Sil

What is the actual niche millipede’s fill? I remember learning about the phylum in college bio but not where I should expect them or what they do for the ecosystem. ** also asked first time on mars

Felix Lasselle

Do millipedes have arms that are different from the other legs? Or is it just legs all the way up?

Larissa

Are there venomous millipedes? How venomous?

Ayshia Yaeger

Do millipedes and centipedes share a common ancestor or did they somehow evolve the need for so many legs independently?? "Asia" they/them!

Catie Noble

How move?? More specifically, how do they move with all those little legs, and how is their movement similar to/different from caterpillars, worms, centipedes, etc?

Victoria Oetting

Does a millipede have to be crushed to release its smelly toxin? Or do they just fart it out when scared to deter predators? And can we smell this toxin (sorry if that’s common knowledge I just have never seen one before, much less scared one) Do millipedes carry transmissible diseases? Do millipedes also help with making more nutritious soil like earthworms do, or do they just look alike?

Lauren Barney

If you had to pick the next evolutionary advantage for millipedes to gain, what would be the best choice?

Mother Amber Across the 5th Dimension

*also just asked on the mars post Amber Do millipedes bite us or sting us and are they aggressive or just protective? I’m also curious about mommy millipedes are they like eff off child(ren?) or are they protective of their young like momma wolf spiders? What is their purpose? I’m so curious about so much.

John Worster

Do Millipedes have an natural enemies?

Morgan Casey

How fast can they run? Or is the advantage of so many legs more for endurance than speed?

Kate Watters

Why is there a difference between centipedes and millipedes?

Claire Nurc

** Where do millipedes actually live? Apart from on the wall in my office?

BugLuvr

Is it true that silverfish eat holes in your sweaters? Can they bite me? Best way to keep these critters out of my house?

Amy Zucker Morgenstern

** They grow by adding segments, right? So how does that work? If you look closely at an adolescent millipede, will you see a lot of partly-formed segments, or segments that haven't let their legs down yet, or what? It is SO COOL! Zucker is pronounced to rhyme with hooker

Amy Zucker Morgenstern

** Is it true that in a race between the many-legged arthropods, centipedes win every time, hands down? I mean, feet down? And if so, why are centipedes built for speed and millipedes aren't? Zucker is pronounced to rhyme with cooker

Leila Laco

**Why did they evolve to have so many legs? What's the advantage? (Laco pronounced lack-oh)

Anna Frazier

***why so many and why so little?

Gordee

**where are they hanging out at? Why have I never been able to find one (In the Midwest)??

Julia Vollmer

What are their closest living relatives outside of the insect family?

Will Clark

**do they make good pets?

Stephanie Leské

**1st time question asker. :D Have any millipedes been studied or observed with any legs hurt? Do they need all of their legs functioning to move properly??? Also where are there eyes? Are they related to beetles? Can they stand upright? Last one I promise.. what's their poop like? Is it long like them? Stephanie Leské (Leské is pronounced Leskie) ♡

Sydonie S.

What are their exteriors and interiors made of that makes them move like that? What is their life span? What are their diets? Why are they the only "creepy crawly" that freaks me out??

Leah Anderson

This summer I was at a state park in Wisconsin and during a hike I came upon thousands of millipedes on the ground, crawling up the trees and the rocks and even in the creek. Do they hatch in huge batches?

c

** where would you most like to stand on the snake-to-millipede leg spectrum?

c

** any cool millipedes in mythology you know about?

Lauren Legg

What is the evolutionary benefit to having so many legs, and what influences led to this occurring?

Megan Ramirez

Yes! Just came here to ask this! 🙂

Emily Hoban

Is there an actual difference between centipedes and millipedes? Do millipedes have more legs? Is the only difference the amount of legs? Also is an earwig the same thing as a millipede?

Isabella Schulz

** long time listener! First time asker woot! Izzy Schulz (Shh-Ull-t-z) WHAT ARE THEY? They’re not insects, do they egg? Are they closer to crabs or insects?? What role do they play or niche do they fill?

Lila Mankad

**Do millipedes have *exactly* 1000 legs? If so, it’s interesting that it’s such a convenient number. How can we keep them out of our house? Should we keep them out of our house? I heard they don’t sting, but produce hydrogen cyanide. That’s so cool, have you ever felt it? Does it affect humans? Are there people who eat millipedes? Who is related to them, evolutionary-wise? And finally, is it true that millipedes used to be large enough to ride?

Brooke Williams

**what do millipedes use to defend themselves from predators or humans?

Jenna Catalano

Why do they have so many legs? Is there some evolutionary reason for it? Also, why are they so cute? ❤️

Cloudless Knight

** Can milipedes see color? Do they have a social structure? Do they keep pets like spiders do with frogs?

John Casey

How specialized are the insides as you go front to back? I'm imagining a ton of pipe fittings, just endlessly repeating... Like, they wouldn't be much different internally if they were only 500-pedes

Morgan

I went camping last weekend and found many millipede friends in the bathrooms. Why were the congregating in a relatively clean building?

Justine Doll

Legs. Why so many?? Evolution wtf

HBG

I've seen pictures of some some disgustingly big (sorry) millipedes, yet the ones I see on a typical day are super small like an smelly m&m when all curled up. How many species of millipedes are there and what's the biggest one? Do they all have the same protective stank smell?

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Are these the things that walk through my apartment sometimes? Where are they coming from? Where are they going? 2) Like, actually how many legs can they have? What are centipedes versus millipedes? When they go from lil millipede to adult millipede do they add legs as they get older? 3) Can they be found all over the world? I figure with all those legs they've gone a lot of places. Also... how long would it take a millipede to walk the circumference of the world? How many steps would it make? If every leg makes one step should we count that as one step or one step per leg? 4) What do they eat? How do they eat? 5) Do they sleep? Or are they always walking? 6) Would you recommend booping them on the snoot?

Wandering Wyatt

Not a real question - why do they creep me out so much/why are they so gross? Ali - if you and I ever have drinks together I will tell you a funny/pathetic/embarrassing story of my encounter with a centipede.

Erik K

Also why so many legs? How many legs can a millipede loose and still be functional

Erik K

In past times were their giant millipedes like there were other giant fauna?

A J Lichty

Do *all* the legs move, or are some just connected with other legs and providing support?

Ashley Green

**What happens if a millipede loses a leg or two?

Hannah Nuest

What is the benefit of so many legs? How do they compare in speed with insects of similar size?

Lucas waterbody

Do mother and father millipede recognize their offspring and/or is there millipede incest?

Chris Curious

Why do they smell weird when you pick them up?

Alaina Cruson

**Could you explain the difference between centipedes and millipedes, is it just length or other characteristics? Also what's the point of having that many legs??

Andrew

Are millipedes considered a delicacy in any countries and is there any nutritional value to humans who dine on these dudes?

Ann Hanlin

Hi! My first time asking a question and I’m SO excitedddd. I asked my grandma if she had any questions about millipedes, and she asked, “do they have toenails?” My fiancé asked how many would it take to tow a car 😂.

Megan Duffy

First time question asker!!!! Have you ever seen the Charlie the Unicorn 4th episode with the giant space millipede? Also, is there a evolutionary reason to why these critters look so gross?

Ted Vician

Are there patterns to how they move their legs to move? If so, are the patterns different depending on speed, or for different species?

Jessica Smith

How do they use peristaltic motion to keep their legs all organized and not tripping over themselves? I know a lot of natural processes use this type of motion but is there any good tea on how or when millipedes caught on?

Colton

** First time question asker! How long ago did millipedes branch off from other related arthropods like centipedes? Why do they get their own class when there are super diverse classes like insects? Are millipedes super diverse too? What separates millipedes at the lower levels like orders?

glittertornado

What was the millipede in the first Charlie and the Chocolate factory in the tunnle scene? (And what was with that scene??)

Jessica Smith

Some more important questions: Do they fart? How do they, ya know, do it? Also- not an insect with all those legs, not a spider, not some land crab…what are they???

Yalang

First time question asker: first aren’t they adorable and next, how long do they live and are they okay to have as pets?

carissa

How many legs can a millipede lose before it should stop being classified as a millipede?

Ben DeDominic

Why do they only seem to come out after rains and then suddenly die outside my front porch?

Amy Hickman

Would a centipede or a millipede win in a fight?

Shelby Mills

**can you eat them? If so, what is the best way?

Shelby Mills

Are millipeds related to fireworms?

Shelby Mills

How many stomachs do milipeds have?

Anna Rogers

** First time question asker :) Just found out that millipedes only have 3 pairs of legs when they hatch and I just want to know where the hell the legs just keep coming from ?

Loren R.

First time question asker. Why do their chemical defenses smell like sweet almonds?!

Specs Owl

How do they coordinate so many legs, and make their body move so seamlessly?! It's like they are gliding! Do they have different gaits the way that horses do?

Maisie Lopez

do millipede legs move in a sinusoidal fashion? if they lose a leg does it affect this? is there an equation for it if it is sinusoidal?
