Okay last one today: What is Dark Matter? What does it do? How do people study it? How does it differ from Dark Energy?

I am losing my damn mind about an upcoming episode on Dark Matter. Leave those questions below and let me know if I haven't ever read your name, or done it wrong! Aaaaaaaah. Okay, cool.

Comments

Will

** What’s the worst explanation you’ve ever heard about what dark matter is? I’ve heard scientists say that dark matter is a terrible name because it misleads people about what it really is. If you could give it a new name, what would you choose?

Will Clark

**Is dark matter the absence of matter? Or something measurable? Thanks - PWILLY

Mae

What do Sci-Fi shows and movies get right and wrong about Dark Matter?

Mae

Why does Dark Matter matter? 😜

Leah Anderson

First time asker! What is a "hidden valley" (CERN mentions it on their webpage about Dark Matter)? Is there a potentially a parallel universe occupying the same space we inhabit?

Stephanie Leské

**Why do we call Dark matter dark & not light?

Sydonie S.

Looking to the future, what new technologies and tools are on the horizon for exploring and hopefully gaining more concrete evidence of the existence of dark matter?

Claire Wang

**How do we really know what’s going on with dark matter at all? Isn’t almost all of space super theoretical? Especially as you get further and further from Earth?

Jim Bartholomew

Best alternative theories to explain the observations that suggest dark matter might be there.

Lauren Legg

Has there been any further research into the possibility of axions making up dark matter, if so has there been any conclusion and if not what do you think dark matter of composed of?

Ian, not Ian.

How does Futurama's depiction of Dark Matter hold up?

cash.ruska

Does dark matter contain energy?

Megan Ramirez

I've heard the terms WIMPs and axions used in relation to the search for dark matter but am uncertain what these are. Are these possible candidates for dark matter, or means of potentially detecting dark matter? (Or something else entirely - I don't know!)

Nathalie Jones

Could ghosts be made of dark matter? (I'm literally an astro grad student I'm not wilding) (or maybe I am)

Lila Mankad

Seconding this one! And, why did they name it dark matter anyways?

Lila Mankad

**Could you explain cold/warm/hot dark matter? Is dark matter important to the average person?

Isabella Schulz

*** hi first timer! Izzy Schulz (pronounced like Charles Schulz from peanuts- with the T that doesn’t exist ha) (sh-ull-t-s) Is there a way in the future dark matter could be *harnessed?* *used?* to power things? If it doesn’t have an electromagnetic force, how is it detected?? (Or how can it potentially be detected??)

Jenna Catalano

Why are physicists sure that dark matter exists and that it's not an error in calculations or equations being used?

Morgan

What the heck is it and why does the concept of it scare me

Ingrid Clark

First time question asker! Sorry if this is going from zero to eleven or off on a tangent...but does our understanding of dark matter and dark energy affect how we think the universe is eventually going to end? Do you prefer the "big crunch" or "big rip" theory? Does this have anything to do with dark matter at all??

Jackie

Third! 💜

Jackie

How did we arrive at the values that everything ‘normal’ is 4-5% of the universe, dark matter is 27% and dark energy is 68%?

Jackie

How much dark matter is in this room right now?

Sleepy John

If we can't interact with it (and vice versa), how can we characterize it other than "We think it's there." ?

Nick A

** How precisely can we detect gravity variations today? What scale would a "dark matter particle" or "structure" have to be before we could detect its gravitational influence?

The Motley Lion

Is DARK MATTER just a made up thing to fill in the unknown variables in our mathematical equations that just don’t add up right? Ex. 22 divided by 7 is 3 with a remainder of 1 dark matter.

Wandering Wyatt

I’m just really excited about this episode because it confuses the f*ck out of me but I am always hungry to learn more.

Earl of Greymalkin

1) So like... what actually is it? How do we know that is is matter? Is it made of the same stuff as matter but... dark? What is the probability that it acts significantly different from (light? do we call it light?) matter? How does antimatter relate? Is there dark antimatter? 2) What is the best music to listen to while researching dark matter? 3) What the hecking heck are virtual particles???? 4) This subject is hard to come up with questions on because (insert brain explosion emoji here). How do we know this stuff is real? WHAT IS REALITY? 5) How has our understanding of dark matter changed over time since it was first recognized as a phenomenon? 6) What is this story about the galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 that might be missing its dark matter???

Juan Martin

Such an interesting topic! Is there a "map" of the dark matter in the visible universe? Do you think it is some kind of particle? Would it affect the Standard Model of particles?

Juan Martin

I am also interested to know this! How are estimations like this made, especially comparing "things" (like visible matter, energy and dark matter) with dark energy which I thought it was just a way to account for the accelerating expansion of the Universe

Juan Martin

Did dark matter originate early during the Big Bang, during the inflation period, when the Universe cooled to form subatomic particles or at some other point? Is there evidence of dark matter in the cosmic microwave background radiation?

Lyssa Mercier

I'm beyond excited for this one, my brain is struggling to actually formulate questions! If the universe is mostly made of dark matter and dark energy, are humans and other living creatures partially made of them too? If we could perceive dark matter would it look like anything? Sorry if this one is too sci-fi-y but, if you consider the theory of multiple universes, could another universe be made entirely of dark matter/energy?

Dorothy Hoover

Hi PodDad! You are amazing. I can't wait for it. Wish I had a very intelligent/mind blowing question for your -ologist,but alas no. Just lots of gratefulness for you and all your guests for educating all of your podlings. Love to you and your family Dorothy 🤗

Lucas waterbody

**If we find a way to interact with dark matter how do you imagine it will act? Do you think it will consists of particles and subparticles? Will it be a wave like everything quantum physics?

Lucas waterbody

Also: I know we can't observe it but after working on it for years you must get some weird imaginary images in your head when you think about it. What does dark matter look like in your head?

Clara Martin

How does our understanding of dark matter influence modern physics? What might a better understanding of dark matter change about current physics? Do black holes change/warp dark matter, since they seem to impact the space around them? Do people have dark matter in them?

June Bramley

Is dark matter really diffuse? Like, we see a picture of a nebula and it's solid looking but it's actually a ridiculous distance away and it wouldn't look anything like that if we were in it. Is dark matter similar, like one gram per parsec or something like that?

Alaina Cruson

How did we figure out about dark matter, was it all just like math??

The Growth Arc

Duncan (my 14yo spawn) asks, "what's the difference between 'dark matter' and 'dark energy?"

The Growth Arc

(They continue, "because I keep hearing the both of them used and I cannot tell the difference."

TayBo33

If we could understand and even control or manipulate dark matter, what sorts of things could we do with it? Or is it not something that can be controlled or manipulated at all?

Jackie

What would happen if I had 10lbs of dark matter in my hands? (I’m scared that for such a cool premise, the answer is literally nothing)

Jackie

Do some galaxies not have the expected amount of dark matter? Which ones? And do we know why?

Jackie

Is it possible there’s some other ‘stuff’ out there in the universe that also doesn’t interact with our stuff? Like there tons of ‘purple matter’ we just haven’t discovered yet?

Jackie

Does matter form structures they way our matter does? At the tiny atomic level or the huge galactic level?

Ted Vician

Is there anti-dark-matter to correspond with anti-matter?

Matt Ceccato

Did “Futurama” get dark matter right or wrong?

Ed Matesevac

Related to one of the questions written by Jackie. Is there a reason we reduce matter to a “binary” state as dark and the rest? It seems quantum theory itself stretches the notion that core constituents of the universe exist in pure binary pairs…but I’m almost clueless on the topic

Ed Matesevac

Is Dark Matter an abstraction created to help us conceive of or model behavior we don’t have the ability or words to describe?

Jessica Smith

Just like explain it to me like I’m a 5 year old, but not one in the gifted and talented class.

Ruby Chan-Frey

Why is the universe so big??? Where do we keep all the dark matter?? Can I go there?

Anfauglir

What are the chances that the concept of dark matter are completely off due to a basic misunderstanding of what constitutes matter and energy?

Maria

What would the universe look like if there was no dark matter? What would happen if it suddenly disappeared?

Mykenzie King

How does dark matter effect life on earth?

Jack Sparks

How does this field of study impact how you see yourself in relation to the universe?

Shelby Mills

What is the elemental make up of dark matter--or is it it's own element? 😵

Elizabeth Anderson

I wish I could even begin to comment about this. I love Neil Degrasse Tyson, so I’m going to see if he has a StarTalk episode on it, and then I’ll let you know my questions, because he always leaves me with questions 😅 And I know I can’t just reply to your post with “What is it?” Lolll. I think I’ve attempted to learn about it before, but still have no idea. Looking forward to your episode on it, because you and your guests have a way of really clearing things up, and helping those of us who are curious, but don’t know anything.

Thomas Beckett

Is Dark Matter where our socks go when they disappear from the laundry?

Rachael Gardner

If dark matter doesn't interact at all with regular old matter, what if anything can we learn about it? Will the concept still be useful?

Isaac Raabe

What physical properties do dark matter exhibit? Do we know if light or sound waves can pass through it?

Meridith

I was here to ask the seemingly opposite question: is dark matter made up of ghosts/souls? Serious question.

MB

Dark matter and multiverse theory and/or "time travel"... yes/no/maybe?

Kaffeine

If dark matter was to disappear tomorrow, what would happen to the universe? (More importantly, what would happen to my cat???)

Jackie

Please ask this!

Jackie

I now HAVE to know the answer to this question!

Silvia Triverio

For some reason I feel towards the dark matter the same way I do towards the Nothing (from The Neverending Story). Is the dark matter really ao frightening?

Mother Amber Across the 5th Dimension

I don’t know literally anything about dark matter so I’m actually really excited about this topic. How did they even find out about dark matter and are there dark matter deniers?

Loren R.

I keep forgetting to put "first time question asker"! Why is dark matter "dark"? Is it an absence of something (like literal darkness is absence of light) or is it an abstract meaning?

Specs Owl

How much of the His Dark Materials series is true, or could be true?

Anika's Cat Arya

What's the difference between dark matter and antimatter?

Laura Jordens-Harris

Is there a theory as to why we can’t detect dark matter yet?

Andrew Mills

First time question: What are the chances that revisions to the theory of gravity will explain dark matter?

Donald Merritt

Are recent discoveries in gravitational wave observation helpful at all in finding new lines of inquiry either for theoretical or observation approaches?

bbocatt

oooooooooo love this q

Between Dumplings

Is a black hole the same thing as dark matter (did black holes just upgrade to a jazzier name?)

Doctor (almost!) Elder

Is dark matter the same as the "anti-matter" that is often mentioned in Science Fiction?

Eric Craft

How would you know if you were near dark matter?

Timmy H.

How relevant is dark matter to a day to day lives?

Rebekah Fitchett

How do you detect something that is basically undetectable?

Ann Hanlin

Saw an article with “dark matter bullets” in the title, and I don’t the article was about dark matter weapons, but my question is: Would it be possible to weaponize it, and how screwed are we if someone figures that out?

Sam Phillips-Corwin

*new. Do scientists suspect that dark matter is as interesting and diverse as normal matter? Could there be different elements and molecules, maybe even asteroids or planets made of dark matter? Or is it just supposed to be an evenly distributed cloud? I've heard that scientists think dark matter makes up a majority of the universe, which really makes non-dark matter the outlier. Maybe all the interesting stuff is happening in the dark matter and we are made up of blah-matter. Anyway, is it likely that dark matter exists on earth and inside all of us?

Aven

What do you think of the new theory that dark matter doesn’t exist and that modified gravity theories can account for the behavior of galaxies and galaxy clusters?

Sarah king

Could humans potentially harness some kind of energy from dark matter or other use in the future?

Lauren Theis

Are there different KINDS of dark matter, like different categories? Or is it all lumped under the umbrella term “dark matter”

Andrew Mills

I like this question, it is more concrete that the similar question I posed. It parallels how Einstein’s theory of general relativity addressed the inability of Newtonian gravity to explain the precession of Mercury’s orbit. But it seems like an extreme degree of revision needed if there is 4-5x more dark matter than normal matter according to Jackie’s earlier question.

Justin Saucedo

Dark Gas, Dark Fluid, Dark Solid, Dark Plasma?
