Let Dr. Derek Hennen sweep you off your 740 feet and into a world where millipedes have a place in your soul. If you liked the Dendrology episode with Casey Clapp, you will GREATLY enjoy this -ologist's chat about millipedes.

So many weird little facts that I don't want to spoil for you.

And I thought I'd use these weekly episode posts as more of a fun forum to hang out and listen to your reactions and related stories. Did you listen? How do you feel about them now? Have you sniffed one??

Okay let's go.

Bearing but two legs,

Your Dad o' the Pod

Emily Krieger

cool! is there a handy way to remember which one --- centipedes or millipedes --- bite? thanks!

Alie Ward

YA GOTTA LISTEN EMILY. He has so many good facts and you'll leave knowing them like friends. (Centipedes are bitey...)

David Červínek

How many of them pairs do they actually have? Can they control each "leg" individually?

Snarky Mermaid

In the Indian Jones and the temple of doom movie in the scene with all the giant insects, How would Kate not get hurt by a giant centipede crawling around her head?

Somerset Francis

Not listened yet but I always thought centipedes look way more threatening. If I were putting them in a video game, centipedes would be this scary jaggedy thing you avoid, whereas I can see millipedes giving you a ride or letting you bounce on their backs or something

Matt Thompson

What is the largest known millipede size ever recorded?

Alena Litin

Omg yesssss I’ve been waiting for this one

AussieColin

Have they ever found a millipede that actually has 1000 legs?

Somerset Francis

Oh. My god you guys. Can you imagine an Ologies interview with Sir David Attenborough?

Somerset Francis

Millipedes above ground = me at social gatherings haha

Somerset Francis

Another weirdly beautiful, beautifully weird episode 🙏

Jackie B

Yes!! Last year there was a paper published about a new species discovered that had more than 1000 legs. Eumillipes persephone

Jackie B

!!! I’m so excited to listen. I will be on my commute to my teacher orientation :)

Elizabeth Edwards

Why are they in my apt? They appear out of nowhere! How can I make them go away?! We're on the 3rd floor and haven't found any clear points of entry but will find 20+ scattered around our apt at a go.

AussieColin

Ah, but I'm fussy! I want exactly 1000. :-D

NanoNaturalist

Omg I love Derek can't wait to listen!!!

Average_pi

Millepedes are cool The legs are Soft and they Tickle. How'd They GET so many legs?

Between Dumplings

Are millipedes a type of centipede or vice versa?

Between Dumplings

I have personal experience with a centipede- wild.

Gabrielle Arkett

FTQA. Are their feet actually poisonous or is that flim flam? In a fight between a spider and a millipede, who would win? Do such battles happen???

Spencer Parks

They add segments and legs as they grow?!?! I pretty much always listen while at work on a single air pod. This is one of the few podcasts I'll listen to the day it comes out, after my 4 daily podcasts (including my own, to make sure it's all good). Right now I'm binging through "Films to be Buried With" but Ologies still comes first because it's Ologies! I have recommended it to SO many people, but I have no idea if they listen. :)

Claire Wang

in high school i used to collect little house millipedes that would appear in my family’s home and put them in a little non-airtight container with soil and leaves. i read up about how they like burrowing and what they liked to eat too

Isabelle Brooks

Are all of their limbs legs? Or are some arms?

Jess Loeffler

Why so many legs? Some of them must be redundant at a certain point

FLRabbit

True story, growing up visiting our cabin in the woods of Ontario, we were always warned not to leave shoes on the floor at night because millepedes would crawl into them. Well, my sister's boyfriend failed to heed this advice, then put his sneakers on on the morning and SQUISHED a millipede. The poor unsuspecting millipede was out of its misery, but the boyfriends toes were dyed purple and took months to return to normal color. What exactly is this amazing dye and can we produce it in the lab to drop on science deniers?

Allie Brown

First time question asker: I’ve heard centipedes bite (or sting?) and millipedes do not. Why would they adapt so differently?

Alie Ward

She was not a bat (listen to the ep)

Alie Ward

The episode’s up and we talk about all shapes and sizes!

Alie Ward

Derek is a gem, people LOVE him

Alie Ward

The ep is up at the link — we cover allll of this!

Alie Ward

Oh my word oh my word, the heart palpitations

Alie Ward

We talk about this in the episode! There’s a story you’ll appreciate and it involves a bucket or two

Alie Ward

Derek explains WHY the legs and suddenly… it makes so much sense

Alie Ward

The episode is up and we cover that! I HAVE SO MUCH CLARITY NOW

Alie Ward

Oh! The episode is up and this was just meant as a discussion thread! But we cover everything from flim flam to venomous bites to cyanide!

Alie Ward

Awww thank you so so much, Spencer! Has anyone ever caught you listening with one airpod?

Alie Ward

Clair you will love this one, truly. Did you name them?

Alie Ward

This is the discussion thread because the episode just went up but we TOTALLY cover that, great question

Alie Ward

Episode is up and we cover that! It makes sense when he explains it

Alie Ward

Whoooooa! I have never heard of that dye! The episode is up but I should google it anyway

Alie Ward

Oh the episode is up and this is just a thread to chat! But we cover this!

Spencer Parks

No one had ever mentioned the single airline thing, but more people should do it because it saves battery life! Unless you NEED stereo sound. :)

Tom Astle

For anyone needing proof that millipedes are cute, I highly recommend looking up pill millipedes, which are short millipedes that can roll into a ball like a pillbug!

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

Haven't listened yet, but popping in to say I'm VERY excited about it. especially bc you compared it to the dendrology episode which is my FAVORITE!

Somerset Francis

Honestly, it feels like a perfect match. So much of what he stands for is what Ologies stands for. I don't know him personally but I think he'd love the show

bbocatt

ur comment at the end made me put my invisalign trays back on. bc same. i’m embarrassed. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO REMEMBER

bbocatt

i live in tn and have always loved our reign of the mountains bc there’s so many cool salamanders (do we have an ep on them???) but now that i know there’s also so many cool crawly leg guys i know what i’m about to do

Abby Grieb

Milli/centipedes are a group of bugs that I just cannot deal with… just imagining them makes my skin crawl 😂 this episode made me feel a little bit better about them but I still won’t be out looking for them in the woods any time soon

Between Dumplings

I was in church (in Hawaii) it was the 70s so of course I was wearing bell bottoms that lay open on the floor when kneeling. Suddenly something was attacking my knee. I thought "be quiet, people are praying" and also "get this thing OUT OF MY PANTS." Whispered to dad something is trynna kill me, seeing the panic in my face, he picked me up and clamped his hand above my knee. And into the office we went. I passed out. Woke to him cursing a blue streak looking through yellow pages for hospitals (before 911). The thing dropped out of my pants on the way down the aisle. While the DAR parishoners were clutching their pearls and declaring I must be on drugs, a couple of dads saw it fall and tried to kill it with a bug spray. Ineffective. Shovel smacks, also ineffective. Unfortunately, it had to be dispatched with the business end of the shovel. I was fine except freaked and sore and the weirdest thing was the puncture wounds looked like snake bites (I sent you a link) and they would randomly swell when I was in the shower or a LONG time after the incident. Yeah, me and church are kinda done...

Claire Wang

i DID love this episode oh my gosh i think i was smiling almost the whole time, thank you so much for committing an episode to it. iirc i named one of them todd but left the others unnamed.. i think todd was the smallest one out of the 3-4 i had collected. it was really cool finding their molted skin at some points :) idk what other good millipede names would be, if you might have suggestions for future reference :))

Elizabeth Reed

My boyfriend was stationed in Kenya in the military and saw millipedes that were roughly a foot in length. Ive heard other anecdotal evidence that they can get very large close to the equator, is this true?

Daniel J McDonald

I loved this too much. One of my favorite animals, connections to my home state and a part of it I love the most, and A FREE FIELD GUIDE. Which I have downloaded in anticipation of my next SE Ohio backpacking trip. Amazing show.

Allie Brown

Whoops! That’s what I get for not reading thoroughly!

Kailen A Mooney

Millipedes produce cyanide which can change skin color (Google “cyanosis”)

Jackie B

Loved it!! I have no idea if there are millipedes in the soil of my area but if there are I now know to 100% smell them and tweet at Derek LMAO

Ann Hanlin

Thank you so much Alie for asking my Grandma’s question! I played the answer for her last night and she was just as shocked and excited as I was! It definitely made our day. Who would’ve thought—toenails!

Alie Ward

Tom, your photos are gorgeous! Big fan over here!

Alie Ward

Let me know what you think, Squirrel!

Alie Ward

Duuuuuuude I don't knoooooow. I feel bad for my orthodontist. I can see on his face he is flummoxed.

Alie Ward

Get a black light and go on a night safari! But afterwards, make sure to Check Your Crevices

Alie Ward

Ahahaha! I hope you never had to evict BUCKETS of them from a basement

Alie Ward

Coming from a famous Kinetic Salticidologist, that means a lot!

Alie Ward

Great question -- we didn't cover equatorial ones but I'll have to look it up

Abby Grieb

I would just move away and burn the house down hahaha

Alie Ward

YESSSSS! Tell your fiance I'm sorry we didn't get to theirs -- next time!

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

I've listened to it twice today! Back to back. I love it so much! Definitely top 5! I'm going to listen to it again tomorrow to catch what I didn't today. ♥️

Eric R. Eaton

Hi, Derek! Nice to hear you on here. Welcome to the Ologies guests' club. :-)

Kim Josund

we were in Botswana earlier this year and we saw these GIANT black millipedes -- at least 10 inches if not a foot long. very cool

Chandler Witherington

I was glad to learn that I am not the only one who thinks they smell weird!! One time in middle school there were thousands of the little brown ones (I think they are the greenhouse millipedes that he mentioned a few times) out on the sidewalk after a lot of rain and I will never forget the oddly-sweet-but-in-a-very-unpleasant-way smell!!

Dorit

Loved it! Listened to the interview while walking along next to the ocean here in Cape Town. Derek is a gifted science communicator! I would love to get my hands on one of those little embryo hiding poo pellets ... developmental biologist here.

Emily Krieger

the foot-long bat eater and the brains in legs were my faves i think, so cool!!

Kai Kishimoto

A great episode! I’m surprised the gentle giant arthropleura didn’t make a cameo appearance

Gina Maday

Loved this episode!! And the cherry centipede IS very gorgeous!!

Gina Maday

Also, got my Ologies merch in the mail today!! ❤️ HOLLA’ 😍

Ann Hanlin

Omg no—we were stoked that one of them got asked. He was very excited to hear about the toenails 😂.

Kaffeine

I listened to this while looking at my tiny colony of tiny bumblebee millipedes, which are quite an incredible species to keep and observe. I agree that millipedes are kinda mundane pets if you are looking for something to interact with and handle, but if you are interested in checking in once a month and making high pitched squeaks of glee at the new legs they’ve added before tucking them back on their warm shelf, they are perfect. 💛💛💛

Cat Kessler

Alie, I'm always curious as to how you choose your audio clips. I'm not *quite* done with this episode, but I keep hoping to hear the line from the TV show Coupling where a character yells, "I've got too many legs!" 😆
