Apologies for the lil' delay in hitting publish -- we were burning the midnight oil to finish it after visiting my fam last week.

This one is full of alpine trivia and sensual goats and conservation adventures (hello, helicopters) and hooooow a goat can scale a near-vertical cliff.

Anyone ever seen a mountain goat? Plan on counting them in the future? Let's discuss the episode below.

Goats but not goats,

Oreamnology (MOUNTAIN GOATS ARE NOT GOATS) with Julie Cunningham - alie ward

Mountain goats are not goats. And there's only one living species, Oreamnos americanus. WHAT?? Montana-based wildlife biologist and Oreamnologist Julie Cunningham counts mountain goats from helicopters, traps and tests them for science, and spends even her off-days searching for goats on mountaint

I listened on my drive home from work… been missing you. Thank you.

Why do they have rectangular pupils? I always assumed it's because it helps them see ledges better or something like that. Also, when did they evolve to be like this?

This episode was the g.o.a.t!

Alie Ward

Thanks for tuning in, and sorry for that one goat scream.

Alie Ward

It's never too late for a full back tattoo

Alie Ward

That's a good question and since Oreamnos aren't actually goats -- they're closer to antelopes or chamois -- I figured we'd cover that in the future when I do a full-on goats-goats Capra episode!

Alie Ward

I slipped that in before patreon questions and I hope you enjoyed that slayer

When y’all mentioned headbutting I immediately became the Leo-pointing-at-the-tv meme. When worlds (and Ologies episodes, and the heads of ungulates) collide!!

NanoNaturalist

A mountain goat in WA once threatened to head butt me off the summit of a mountain 😂

When you dropped that mountain goats aren't actually goats I was floored! Sadly I was alone at the time, but I will be telling this to everyone I meet for the next ever.

Alie Ward

Aaaahaha! I was ~chewing~ on my tongue to let her finish because I wanted to interrupt her and scream JULIE DR HEADBUTT IS AN OLOGIST AND WROTE IN FOR THIS ON PATREON

Alie Ward

That's... NOT good. But I bet it loved your pee.

Alie Ward

Tell EVERYONE, Susan. Tell them all.

Emmalee Jones

You did so well, you became the holding-in-a-fart meme 🥹🥇

I recently learned this ancient greek word : αἰγίλιψ (aigilips), which means "really steep; shear". Basically it more directly translates to "destitute of goats" - i.e. so steep even goats can't climb it! After listening to this episode, I have a new appreciation of that word :D

Chrissi

Wow, that flew right over my head 😂

Cassandra Grafstrom

Isn’t it because it gives them a wider field of vision for surveying for predators?

you two did an excellent job explaining the connection between hunters fees and conservation!

Emily Krieger

and i was especially interested in hearing how a hunting season is planned, what factors are taken into consideration.

As a born n raised Missoulian I'm a little disappointed to not have seen many mountain goats in my lifetime 😅 I think only in Glacier

I really enjoyed listening to this episode! I had no idea that mountain goats were totally separate from other goats. One point where my ears perked up was when Julie Cunningham mentioned that she has lots of mountain goat wool kicking around. I'm a spinner and a knitter and I was so curious what that was like. I ended up reading this article to learn a little more: https://spinoffmagazine.com/natural-fibers-spin-mountain-goat/ It sounds very cool, and one day I hope to be lucky enough to spin some myself.

Just SO delighted by the saying about sheep going where humans don't and goats going where sheep won't because now we All know how to sort out sheep from the goats 😍 AND I just found a goat emoji 🐐

Your comment about getting a Wildlife Bio Degree instead of taking a Helicopter Tour to see mountain goats made me laugh, as I'm starting school next week to do just what Dadward recommended~ gonna be a Field Biologist someday soon!!

Paulina Krasińska-Sroka

I just had an REVELATION about mountain goats! 🤯 As pretty much everyone I was stunned they're not really goats until I was just telling about it to my husband. Only then I noticed that in our native Polish they're not even called goats! 🙊 Goat is "koza" but mountain goat is a "kozica". W the actual F & why didn't I realized that before 😅

Batman Flight

Ok, is it just me being an oversensitive ecologist, or did anyone else find it infuriating that the word 'harvesting' kept being used? I'm not an opponent of hunting per se, but call it what it is, killing/shooting/hunting etc. I feel that to keep referring to it as harvesting is sugar coating the act to make it more acceptable to folk. Especially made me sad whe she mentioned the pack of wolves who 'took a few too many livestock, and were eliminated' (another more acceptable euphemism)

I cannot believe mountain goats aren't goats. This episode was so informative.

Okay allow me to set the stage. Me. 7am. Sitting on my front porch knitting and listening to this episode. My neighbor walks by and all he hears is “MY COAT IS LONG AND THICK AND WHITE AND HELPS TO KEEP ME WAAARMM” how else was I supposed to explain myself other than informing neighbor Steve that Ologies taught me mountain goats are in fact not goats?!? Now Steve is curious. Steve needs to know more. Welcome to ologies Steve.

Cait

Honestly was so fascinating (I mean, they all are) but how in the world are goats not goats? Loved it.
