Okay. Wow. I have been waiting actual YEARS to meet up with UC Santa Cruz professor Dr. G. William Domhoff, who is one of the foremost experts on dream research.

He just published "The Neurocognitive Theory of Dreaming: The Where, How, When, What, and Why of Dreams" and I'm excited to ask him one million questions until he is exhausted and points to the door and asks me to leave with his eyes.

Leave your questions below and let me know if you're a FTQA (first time question asker or I've never said your name!) or if I've said it wrong!

Dreams coming true,

Why does melatonin give me such wonky dreams?

Francesca Huggins

Wait-mares, server dreams, whatever you’d like to call them. Nearly every server or bartender I know has told me about the intensely vivid dreams they have about working a nightmare shift at a restaurant- even some who haven’t waited a table in a decade. Does that relate to the cortisol produced working in the service industry? What causes such a large group of people to share the same nightmare?

Rachel Kendrick

Is there any backing behind the theory of what you eat effecting your dreams being weird?

Is there anything to the idea that dreams can “mean” something? Or is that all pseudoscience? Where’s the evidence?

Jess Vice

How common is it to dream in color, smell things in your dreams, remember textures? When I relate some of my more vivid dreams to other people, they’re shocked at the level of clarity and detail. Am I just a good dreamer or am I living on two different planes?!

Pyry Hopearuoho

ftqa! sometimes i wake up from a dream, and when i fall back asleep the same dream continues. what’s up with that?

Andy Guarnaccia

FTQA, any truth to the idea that our dreams have meanings that can be interpreted?

Rachel Pearson

FTQA hello! Why is it that some people have really bizarre and vivid dreams and others have very mundane dreams. As someone who has very bizarre and vivid dreams frequently, this has always intrigued me. P.S love you pod dad, thanks for the show 💙

Susan Lin

What are the merits of lucid dreaming? I have a friend who used to to help process some trauma but I wasn’t sure if that was a good way to utilize the skill (once developed)

Hannah Matousek

Why do I go through periods of no dreams at all? Sometimes I will go two months with no dreams that I can remember, and then have several weeks straight of the most vivid, wacky dreams.

Hannah Nuest

Why did I have really messed up dreams when I took dexamethasone?

Olivia Flick

Why do dreams seem to happen more/vividly when you fall back asleep after waking?

Kaitlin J

I always dream about what’s stressing me out, is my brain trying to help me or are my neurons just being dicks?

Tatum

Is lucid dreaming real? And if so, why can some people do it more easily than others?

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Recurring dreams!! I’ve had one since 2nd grade where there’s a scary monster in the school and we have to swim home in giant tubes but all along it’s just Timon and Pumbaa. Have tried to figure it out for years and why my brain keeps needing to experience/unpack it every so often—? Help!

Cady Tucker

Is it common to have repeat dreams, or many in a similar context? Why does this happen?

Francesca Perrelli

FTQA 1. are healing dreams a thing? 2. Is it true that eating cheese before bed makes dreams more intense? 3. Who came up with symbolisms in dreams? Is there an official guide? Does it depend on the culture? Which cultures give/gave the most importance to dreams? Also love u Alieeeee

Laura Jensen

FTQA: why do some dreams fade as soon as you wake up, while others leave a weird taste in your brain all day?

Amanda Banks

FTQA Why is it that I can remember some dreams vividly even years later, but others I can’t remember within moments of waking up?

Bailey Arcilla

FTQA: why is falling such a common dream especially when you’re just starting to drift off?

Hannah Nuest

I feel like my dreams used to be way more wacky and interesting when I was younger, but now it’s a lot of boring, like being late for work or whatever. Why is this? Is there any connection between weirdness of dreams and how young or creative a person is?

Ashley Adair

Nick Marshall

Why is it when I try to recall dreams from months/years ago, I can only recall nightmares? Is it because it induced more of a response than a peaceful dream or some other reason?

Cole Robertson

If the sense of smell is so closely tied to memory, why don't I smell anything in dreams? (Or am I just a weirdo?)

Erinhemm

Why do dreams fade as the day goes on? Why are all of my dreams about me or my family and friends dying? Can I do anything to help me better remember my dreams (my Fitbit often says I spend a lot of time in REM sleep but I hardly remember them when I wake up). What’s the deal with recurring dreams? I used to have the same dream every night for years, eventually moving to once a week, once a month, a few times a year. Also, what’s up with lucid dreaming and why is it so amazing?! 😴

Feye

Why can't I remember having any dreams? I remember about 1 dream every few years, write it down and hope to be able to remember more, but so far no luck..

Heather

FTQA When I wake up from a dream, why do the details fade very quickly sometimes and then other times, I can remember all the vivid details ?

Allison Tuuri

What is his favorite myth and/or mythical animal about dreams?

Olivia Flick

Sleep talk and walking… just WHY AM I LIKE THIS? Thank you in advance.

Alie Ward

I have straight up dreamt that I was reading and studying and writing and have been like "this rules! I can study while I SLEEP?" then I wake up totally fucked for a test

Hannah Nuest

Is it true that we actually dream every night but just don’t always remember? Is remembering your dreams a sign or good or poor quality sleep or neither?

Felix Wolfe

Why do peoples dreams vary so much? Like my dreams have extremely detailed scenery but lack in a plot, but my friends dreams are all story no setting

Matt Thompson

Can dreams hurt your body? Like if I dream I'm getting hurt, can I be hurt when I wake up (without another external factor doing the actual damage)

Kaitlin J

Why are vivid dreams a side affect of some meds? You’re not anxious but you also don’t get to sleep now lol

Curious Cat

I came here to ask that too! I'm definitely awake (maybe for a drink of water or something) but I can drop right back into my dream where I left off!

Klarissa Pierce

FTQA! Why can I never hit anything in my dreams with force?! 😂

Victoria Oetting

Is there a connection between feelings of dejavu and dreaming? Sometimes when I experience deja vu it feels like I’ve dreamt about this situation before

Brenna Lynch

Lucid dreaming, fact or fiction? So many people have tried to explain to me how to lucid dream, but I've only experienced it once or twice--never on purpose--and I can't even say for sure that it's not just misremembering my dream experience.

Eliza Miller

FTQA: PLEASE TELL ME WHY: I dream in what really really seems like an alternate reality 😬 For multiple years now, at least a few times a week, I dream a completely made up 'universe' that keeps evolving. Developments are created, I have roads, paths and shortcuts that lead me to the same specific places over and over again. I can discover a shortcut in one dream and then months later take that shortcut and it's still there. As I'm doing something in a dream that is new and weird, I'll pass by stuff that's happened in other dreams. Like the coffee shop in my universe is in the bottom of this gigantic tree. It's beautiful it's wonderful. There's a hotel resort and the railings are too short. As railings should be at least at most people hips level, these are all knee level. Weird ass things like people skydiving at night during fireworks. Its a combination of places I've actually been, little bits and pieces of the real world, combined with places I have absolutely never been. Layouts I have never taken before that only exists in my dream. Routines I dont have that only exist in my dreams. It's recently developed a new water park/pool and now I realize I've had dreams of construction in that area. The people I have known for a long time are always in my dreams, I am not married to my husband, but he is usually there. We are still best friends in my dreams (been friends since 2001) Dream continuations that feel like story lines, people have jobs and responsibilities. Its seriously a mind fuck because sometimes it feels so fucking real. The biggest WTF moment I've ever had: O was recounting a dream to a friend. I mentioned the fireworks event, and that it seemed *everyone* was celebrating something HUGE. A friend pointed out a specific spiritual event that coincided the dates with my dream, something about Orions belt, stars and pyramids. That fact made me feel really weird.

Sarah Morcom

FTQA: Whenever I have something important on the next day, I always have a realistic dream that no matter how hard i try I just can't get there and I miss the event. Is there any way to stop having an unwanted recurring stress dream or am I stuck with this one for life?

Mariah McGregor

I recently started a new SSRI and can now remember my dreams *super* vividly. Are most dreams actually that vivid or has my anxiety just created a new and fun way for me to examine my inner psyche?

Tony Vessels

What's the deal with night terrors? Why, when my wife slightly nudges me when I'm asleep, I wake up startled and jumping and yelling?

Tony Vessels

Why do you pee in real life if you pee in a dream?

Alie Ward

GREAT question. I recently started taking magnesium glycinate supplements again (they help prevent my migraines) and I was reading you should take them at night because they can make you sleepy/chill and are also used for anxiety AND that people have more dreams taking them. Sure enough, I've had SO MANY dreams the last few days. So now I have to google studies on this for approx 13 hours

Michelle Lee

Is it more common for people to remember their dreams, or not? I barely need two hands to count how many times I remember my dreams upon waking, and all my friends and family are the opposite, and I wonder how common it actually is!

Lauryann

FTQA, can nightmares spike up the cortisol level of some people? Does it have effects on circadian rhythms?

Jacob Paul

FTQA! How come some people remember their dreams every morning but I never seem to remember having any! I’ve heard it’s impossible not to dream, and yet, I can never recall any details of them (??!)

Emily Staw-fur

Is it true that if you die in your dream, you can actually die?

Andy Arson

Long time listener, first time question asker: Is it true that some stuff we do in dreams will wake us up automatically? Like dying?

Julia Fisher

How does food influence dreams? My dreams are so much more elaborate if I eat chocolate close to bedtime.

Curious Cat

Why do I have such batcrap crazy dreams? They are like full on epic movie type scenarios, with in depth stories and sometimes one dream will refer to another one I had a week ago or something. Am I just bonkers?!

Tony Vessels

What even is lucid dreaming? Is it true that there are strategies to make sure you have a lucid dream?

Snow Drop

Dear pod Dad, why do some substances like alcohol tend to stop the ability to dream entirely. On the other hand there are other substances like blue lotus or the Xhosa dream root that tend to enhance and vivify dreams?

Chase Houde

*********FTQA********* I have had problems with dreams and nightmares for as long as I remember... I am trying to get it figured out. It can be scary sometimes. . . . This is weird multiple question question, sorry, feel free not to ask. . . . I am curious, why do we have dreams? Is it possible that maybe everything is a "dream"? Or are we living in different realities at multiple times and everytime we fall asleep in one reality, we wake up again in the other? Why is it when I have lucid/vivid dreams, sometimes I end up living that dream within a few weeks timeline? . . . I have way to many questions about this, I have always had problems with sleep anddddd I have always been highly intrigued, so sorry.

Mila P ✨

Why do people have recurring dreams? I occasionally find myself having the same set of crazy dreams that only change in small ways each time. In the dream I know that I’ve had the dream before but typically don’t try to actively change anything. Also why do people have dreams that seem to predict the future? I’ve definitely had dreams that showed me a place that id only come to recognize years later and felt that sense of deja vu!

Brandon W Dodds

Sexy dreams/anything that causes a physical reaction, how does that work?

Maddie Rodriguez

okay...SO EXCITED!! I hope this question is mostly relevant. I have very vivid dreams, and always have. So vivid, in fact, that I have memories and dreams confused sometimes. Some of what I thought were memories have turned out to be dreams!! Is this a thing?! Do other people have this same thing happen to them?

Emily Staw-fur

Do babies dream? When do dreams start?

Shannon Dermody

Please explain sleep paralysis! Happened to me in middle school and it was the most horrific thing I’ve ever experienced. Also, why did I hear voices whispering to me?!

Jessica Ward

What's the deal with sleep paralysis? Why does it feel more real than other dreams?

Leslie Pryor

Based on your research, do most people dream in first person, where they see what's going on like they are experiencing it, or 3rd person. Most of the time when I dream, it's more like a movie where I am watching myself experience it. Also how many medications really do cause crazy dreams. I used to take meds for migraine but stopped due to the dreamms/ nightmares of being SAed.

Evan Davis

How does marijuana effect dreams? I've heard people say that weed makes you stop dreaming, but in my experience it makes me dream more

Tony Vessels

Why does my dog yip, growl, and shake when he's dreaming?

Emily Staw-fur

When my dog is sleeping and suddenly starts moving his paws, is he chasing a squirrel in a dream?

Michelle Lee

Yes! Also curious about what lucid dreaming actually is, and if it impacts a person’s waking health (since sleep is some form of recovery for our bodies and minds)

Evan Davis

What can cause sleep paralysis to happen?

Maisie Lopez

will there ever be technology that records your dreams?

Specs Owl

Does my lizard, Pan, dream? She sometimes wakes up very startled for no reason that I can gather!

Matt Ceccato

How do recurring dreams work?

Dantooine

Do dreams have meaning!? Are my dreams symbolic to something that will happen in my life? Deeper repressed feelings? Is there a valid, scientific way to interpret my dreams?

Specs Owl

Oh! I second the thing about a movie. I frequently have dreams where I drift in and out of being myself and watching myself!

Kristen robb

Long time listener, first time question asker. Love you Alie, sending you love at this difficult time from Northern Ireland. Q- sometimes I dream that my teeth have fallen out, it’s horrible. Also my ex used to dream something and it would happen a few days later?? Is there any science behind that?

Naomi Jane

Recurring nightmares/dreams - what's the dealioooo?! Especially when it's something you wouldn't consider a fear in awake life!?

Evan Davis

Why can't I run in my dreams? Everytime I try to run in my dreams, I fall over!

Jules Crofford

Long time listener, FTQA! 👋 every once in a while I'll suddenly remember vivid details of a dream, as if it just happened, but I'm also VERY aware that the dream actually happened a long time ago. So it feels familiar but distant at the same time. Why is it that we sometimes don't remember a dream until way later, and why does it feel so familiar and recent when that happens? ALSO! What are my dogs dreaming about when they make little sleepy yips and bounce their feets around??

Emily Staw-fur

Someone I know had a dream about their house burning down and less than a week later, their house caught on fire. How does that happen?

Ira Gray

Tips for preventing nightmares? I am very tired

Maisie Lopez

if dreams are based somewhat off of real life, should we listen to the lessons we learn from them?

Sh4rkH4ts

Do other people have clear dreams, or are they all somewhat fuzzy like mine? Do some people not dream at all?

Dantooine

Why do we forget our dreams sometimes? Why do we have reoccurring dreams?

CoffeeLeaf90

Why do people who have vivid (awful) night terrors still like/watch/read/ scary/horror/thriller content ? Trying to understand my sister's thought process here 🙃🤷🏽‍♀️😁 (also Alie you said my name perfectly last time -rocks - thank you!)

Kayla Nickel

First time question asker….Why does pregnancy make you have crazy dreams? Literally the only time I remember my dreams is when I’m pregnant and they are super vivid and really weird!

Specs Owl

I would like to know this, as I don't pee in dreams, but I very often have toilet dreams, where I really need to pee and then I can't because people are watching me or i can't find a toilet! And then I wake up needing to pee!

Scott Sheldon

I’ve heard that eating some foods like cheese before sleeping can make you have weird dreams. Is that a thing?

Dantooine

TALK TO ME ABOUT STRESS DREAMS! My teeth falling out. Screaming for help but suddenly having no voice. Being back in high school. What do these mean and how do I stop them.

Roxanne Cheng

FTQA: I'll echo Jacob and Michelle in asking why some people can recall their dreams and I can barely remember anything - unless I'm dreaming and almost awake, but that happens infrequently, and even then, what I remembe r is very lacking in detail or color. Sadly even my dreams have no imagination!

Maisie Lopez

how am i able to feel physical sensations of things i've never experienced? (i.e. i feel myself doing many pirouettes even though i don't have that skill)

Kelly Shaver

Oh my gosh this happens to me too! I’ve always thought it was related to my medications but I’m not sure.

Scott Sheldon

Why is it that I have some dreams that I can still remember years later that were incredibly vivid and others that I can’t remember after a few minutes after I wake up?

Corey

Oh MY GOSH ALL OF THE QUESTIONS What is a dream, and are they functionally different from day dreams / imagining/ lucid dreaming and can you dream? Is it true dreams only happen during a specific stage of sleep? Can they indicate sleep type/ quality? Are they important for memory integration/ strategically forgetting? Can dreams indicate things about our wellbeing? Does everyone dream- do other animals dream? If they do, is it a function of cognition and can that indicate a non-human animals 'intelligence' I've been having really vivid dreams lately which feel meaningful but I can never fully remember them, but there seem to be recurring themes I do remember. Different cultures believe different things about dreaming: can (medical/ cognitive or social/ psychological) Science tell us anything practical about potential meaning/ benefits/ things we can learn from our dreams. And finally: do some people dream more than others? Thank You so so much 🐙💭💭 (oh p.s. do cephalopods dream?)

Jonathan Auyer

Why do we have the same reoccurring dream?

Krystal Symons

What foods cause people to have more dreams and sleep walking? Is it just foods that we can't digest well and cause more gastrointestinal upset or are there common foods to all? WHY the nightmares, why are we adding more misery into life? Same for night terrors and sleep paralysis. Do we see the common dream trends cross culturally where we haven't had a chance to influence the dream types? Also, probably not a dream question but why do I wake up grumpy most mornings? Always have needed 5-30mins to "warm-up" into the day.

Jess Swann

Is there a connection between people who remember their dreams and not-as-restful sleep? I've heard that remembering your dreams indicates that you're waking up mid-REM sleep which is less restful. Is that true?

Brigitte B

Do we know whether other animals dream? And if so, are there any patterns (like, do only mammals dream, only vertebrates, etc)? And if so, any idea what those dreams might be like compared to human dreams? For example, when my dog looks like she's running in her sleep, is she having a dream about running (after a ball, say, her favorite activity)?

Jessica Duran

Why is it that some people remember their dreams vividly and others not? Also side note: is dreaming a lot of nightmares of death normal?

Scott Sheldon

Thoughts on dream journals? I’ve heard that they can be helpful tools in therapy because when you can recall dreams better, you can recognize your own reactions easier when awake.

Anne

Do we know why some people seem to remember their dreams more often than others? My friend has been able to tell me her dreams in detail every day for the 12 years I’ve known her. She doesn’t write them down or anything. Personally, I hardly noticed my dreams, until I started taking antidepressants 3 years ago. Now I often experience them vividly and remember much more when I wake up! I find it intriguing, since the medicine suppresses my intrusive thoughts but seems to have activated something else.

Kelly Shaver

I used to be able to wake myself up from a nightmare if something bad was about to happen but now it usually just “wakes” me into a new dream. Is my brain learning and conspiring against me??

Jess Pal

FTQA - Why is it that when I’m particularly anxious or stressed my dreams are more vivid and weird than usual?

Jess Swann

Are there any statistics on whether people tend to dream as themselves vs as as a character, whether people dream as if they're DOING the dream vs. watching it, etc.?

Paul Smith

I've heard that Stilton is called the Dream Cheese because eating it right before bed causes wild dreams - why is this? Or is this true at all?

MT Bee

How prevalent is lucid dreaming?

Specs Owl

I have always been able to lucid dream - not every night, but fairly often. But other people talk about training themselves to lucid dream. When I read about that, I was like "huh, isn't that like all dreams?" So, how come I can do that without training myself to do so, and others can't? And How come I can do that in some dreams, but not others?

Kelly Shaver

Why can I almost always fly in my dreams but often can’t walk or stand? I’m disabled with mobility issues if that matters.

Scott Duncan

I heard a story that the reason people believed in the past that dreams were only seconds long was because a scientist dreamed he was being guillotined just as a shelf fell on his neck. Urban legend?

Gaelicpearl

I second this. Most of my dreams I feel like I'm in 3rd person POV. Like I'm in the dream and aware of my own thoughts/experience but observing myself from outside.

Kaitlin Schmitz

Ahhhhhh! I have awful dreams ALL the time. Sometimes scary, but usually just stressful and awkward. It really ramped up when I started an SSRI a few years ago. Example: in the first couple weeks I had a dream in which I last a backpack full of Very Important Things. I was distraught and the feeling stayed with me once I woke up. A few days later I FOUND THE SAME BACKPACK and was elated. So, my questions is- WHAT THE FUCK? I have pretty healthy sleep hygiene, get regular sleep (usually) and don't snack before bed. I've tried not taking my meds right before bed, but that didn't change anything. 🤷‍♀️😫

Jeanette Moss McCurdy

I read once that one function of dreams is for our minds to act out situations so that we can react faster if it were to happen it real life. Kinda a trial run. Any truth to that?

Sydney Toups

Can food actually influence dreams? (Cue Michael Caine as Scrooge saying, "There's more of gravy than of grave about you!")

Jess Swann

How do you draw the line between dream 'meanings' as something straightforward vs. hokum? When I dream that I need to pee and I'm hunting through a spaceship for a bathroom, usually when I wake up I do actually need to pee. I can see a connection there. But that feels different from when someone tells me that dreaming of being naked in public means I have a fear of intimacy. What's the deal?

Kat

YES, this is a good question! Falling down from heights! Teeth falling out (this one is one of the worst for me)! Sometimes just sequences with specific people repeating night after night...

Alexandre Catulle

How come some dreams are easier to separate from reality then others. I really don't like the times when I wake up stressed about what I dreamt and it takes a long time to convince myself that it was just a dream.

Sydney Toups

When dogs make noises or "run" while sleeping, are they actually dreaming like we think?

Mike

Is there anything people can do to remember their dreams better?

Average_pi

Why do my friends dreams include me doing things I would never ever do, and why can I say what I want to happen in my dreams and it happens? Also how am I able to be dreaming, wake up, then go back to dreaming?

Gaelicpearl

Serial dreams. I had an epic fantasy adventure dream when I was a pre-teen/early dream when i would fall asleep and pick up the dream from where i remembered it leaving off. Is this something that happens to other folks and why have I only experienced it that once?

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Why do some people have vivid, fantastical dreams full of details while other people don't even remember dreaming? 2) How do some people sleepwalk if sleep paralysis is supposed to be a thing? 3) Why are nightmares a thing??? WHY? Is there a purpose or is your brain broken? 4) Why is the 'hag sitting on your chest making it hard to breathe' a thing across cultures? 5) What's up with drugs that make it hard to distinguish between reality and dreams? Do we know how that works? (Chantix?) 6) Why do we forget dreams so fast after we wake up? Is memory formation not engaged? Are dreams supposed to be a VR environment for us to keep learning in? How is that useful if we don't remember things? 7) What brain areas are involved in dreaming and do we know how this works in other animals? Do dolphins dream even though they only 'sleep' half of their brain at a time?? 8) When/in what animals did dreaming evolve? 9) Does daydreaming have any relation to dreaming? 10) Do neurodivergent people have different dreaming patterns than neurotypicals? 11) Why are falling dreams so ubiquitous? What other archetypes show up in dreams?

Specs Owl

(I know I'm not an expert on dreams, but CBT helped me with a very similar problem!)

Caylie Evans

Why can I sometimes tell I’m dreaming when I’m dreaming and sometimes can’t?

Avren Keating

Why is it so hard to remember dreams later in the day?

Jona

I dream very cinematic and always in the same "dream world" i recognize places, i started mapping it all out on a rough paper sketch. I fell like it's the same world everytime but different places in time. Does any of this make sense, or am I watching to many movies? Also i like setting my alarm clock an hour early just to be tickled enough to turn off the alarm and go right back to sleep. I have the wildest dreams in that one hour and I kinda enjoy that. FTQA btw 🙃

Kate Timms

I’ve heard a lot of people saying that animals don’t dream. Even if the same parts of their brains doesn’t ‘light up’ when they’re sleeping, surely that doesn’t mean that they don’t dream? Maybe their brains just do it differently? What do you think?

Jess Swann

I would also love to hear about this! I heard recently that toddlers need to nap more frequently because they are taking in a lot of information that needs to be 'sorted' and I'm wondering if dreams are related to that.

Jess Swann

God yeah, if there is a way to stop recurring stress dreams I would LOVE to hear about it.

Jenna Catalano

I lucid dream every once in a while, is it possible to "get better" at lucid dreaming with practice?

Jenna Catalano

How do stressful dreams or nightmares affect the quality of sleep you're getting?

Lauren Varner

Is there any way to “prime” one’s brain to dream more vividly or be able to remember our dreams? First time asker :-)

Kendall M

Over the years I’ve taken melatonin supplements to help me sleep, and I’ve noticed that I’ve stopped having dreams (or at least remembering them). Is there a connection or is it coincidence?

Jonathan Auyer

I've had the falling from heights but not the teeth falling out. Yikes! My reoccurring dream is not being able to get out of my high school (which was basically a three-story cube). I start on the third floor, descend the stairs, go out the front door and end up back on the third floor.

Lianne Murray

Oh gosh i have too many questions! Im a long time listener but never had a question asked. Is it true that the dreams where you teeth are falling out is because you are stressed / grinding your teeth? If not why do so many people have this dream? Why do some people remember them sp well and others dont? Is there truth to vitamin B12 (i think thats the one) helping you remember them? Why did my leg hurt when i dreamt i got shot in the leg? What is the cause of things like night terrors? I used to wait up every night screaming or crying because of them. Is there a reason some people have good dreams and others nightmares? Is there truth behind dream symbols? When i was a kid i remember hearing things like if you dream about this thing it means you are worried about money, that kind of thing

Jenna A

Ok.......I have this reoccurring dream , I'm in a school corridor....I end up going into each classroom looking for someone (this has mainly been my partner but has also been my Dad, brother's and some people I haven't seen or been in contact with for years) sometimes there's people in the class telling me they aren't in there, sometimes it's empty and sometimes I'm in every classroom crying my eye's out trying to find them 🤷‍♀️. In any case the corridor never end's and I never find them, I just have high panic anxiety even once I've woken up and it doesn't leave the whole day 😭 I hate it, do you know why I have this dream over and over again? Also have a similar one that has dog's in it but in a different setting by water which I actually had last night so weird that I woke up seeing this on my ph! 😳

Luke LaFemina

Does blue cheese actually give you crazy dreams?

Rin Manzano

Is there any truth to dreams providing some kind of insight into your needs in life?

Lianne Murray

I have these teeth dreams too! I was told its because we are stressed and/or grinding our teeth in our sleep. Is this true??? These dreams are awful! And i used to have them all the time

Nicole Desson

FTQA Is there a time in your sleep cycle where your dreams are more vivid or easier to remember? I always seem to dream more vividly in those precious hours between the cat waking me up at 5 and actually starting my day.

Mary C

There are like 5 recurring “sets” for my dreams that I return to again and again - some are real places (my elementary school) and some are made up (there’s an elaborate fictional ski resort that I visit in my dreams regularly and I could map out the runs and topography if asked). Is there a commonality in the significance of dream locations across humans? (Are childhood locations more common? Do people often realize their fictional locations are actually real at some point, either through true memory or a sense of deja vu?)

Michelle Leonard

Any truth to what you eat/drink before bed affecting your dreams?

Rabia Sadiq

OH MY GAIA!!!! I'm so excited that you are finally covering dreams!!! As a life long vivid dreamer, I have dreamed some insane and fantastical things. To this day, I believe that dreams can tell the future, or relay messages from spirits. My question: is there a reason that my dreams flow like a novel? There is always a beginning, a middle, and an end. And, how can I be a more lucid dreamer?

art_by_di

What is up with lucid dreaming and is there any way I can do it more often? (it’s happened twice, and it was wild). FTQA

Courtney Peterson

I have SO many questions! WHY do I dream that my teeth fall out? (Is there any science that says your dreams mean something or is that flim flam) Also why do some people dream in color and others in black and white? Can we read in our dreams? Do most people dream in third or first person? Does what you eat at night have any effect on what you dream?

kexi

Any way to not remember your dreams/impact if you can remember them? I have some reoccurring rather stressful themes and would rather not know/remember. Feels like it's been a less relaxing night in those cases

Lianne Murray

When i run in my dream i go really slow! Or if im trying to figgt something and punch, its super weak. Why?!?!

Michelle Leonard

Do my doggoes dream? What´s with all the twitching and barking when they sleep?

SueG

Wow, that is amazing! I would like to hear more.

Michelle Leonard

Lucid dreaming. Can you do it too much and what are the consequences of too much lucid dreaming vs. ¨off the cuff¨or ¨spontaneous¨ dreaming?

SueG

I’m sure my dog dreams. Feet paddling, twitching, etc and he doggie talks in his dreams.

Lianne Murray

I second this question! The teeth one is super common but why?

SueG

Good question!

NiceWarmBooks

Does studying dreams make your dreams different? Are there any dreams that make you look at the dreamer and say, oh fuck, go get help stat!? What dream related cultural/media tropes make you roll your eyes?

kexi

Yes, that! Earlier those were dream that I just didn't make it to school before the evening. Now it's other things that I just seem to not get to because of reasons that only make sense in a dream

Lianne Murray

Do we only dream during REM sleep? Or can we dream during the other sleep cycles as well? I dont get much REM sleep (according to fitbit so i take that with a grain of salt) but i do dream a lot.

Samantha Dowdall Green

What does it mean when you dream about being in the ocean, sometimes tossing in the waves? What about recurring dreams that are very similar, but not quite the same. Thank you!

SueG

Excellent questions! I dreamt once I was shot in the back and died. Very disturbing indeed.

Katie Pikes

FTQA - I am a lucid dreamer and have what I call my "dream world". I often return to the same place in my dreams and recognize that location from the last time I dreamt being there. I can even remember what happened last time and will try to change the outcome if it was negative or solve the puzzle faster if I was lost. Each location in my lucid dream world is also connected so I know that if I walk down this direction I'll end up in this other dream location. What's the deal with this? Is this just my brains way of processing things? My dream world has grown as I've gotten older. Also- colors change depending on the mood of the dream too. Is that typical? I've heard you either dream in color or black and white. I'm sort of a mix.

Lianne Murray

Why do dreams feel like they last hours, but its actually been just a few minutes? One time i woke up from a nap, thinking it have been a hour but looked at the clock and it was just 15 minutes since i decided to lay down

kexi

How does our brain make th dreams? Does it actually trigger the dame neurons that are used when we actually see things or is it more like remembering something?

kexi

How does the brain make up the rules while in a dream? (While I'm dreaming things seem to make sense and when I try to explain it to someone else it just doesn't make sense in this world)

Greg Walloch

What do they think about the phenomenon of precognitive dreaming? Are we just picking up on subconscious cues? I've had friends come to say goodbye in a dream and then I wake up and find out they have passed, even though I didn't know they were sick. Or I dreamed about a friend having a baby and then in life days later they announced they were newly pregnant, even though I hadn't seen them in years. Is a person just dreaming about a million things every night and coincidentally in retrospect sometimes they're right?

Marvette Fudge

FTQA: I've heard different theories of why we dream, and explanations of what they are. 1.As a way to process our emotions and experiences. If that is so, why are they so abstract? 2. As a means to imprint memories or for the mind to solve a problem. 3. Why can't we, or at least I, sometimes can't remember the conversations from a dream? There's just an impression of conversation, but the context is garbled and broken. 4. What's the science behind the common theme of some dreams? I.e: Falling, flying, being naked. 5. Is it possible normally seemingly dormant parts of our brain are activated when we sleep and don't have logic and rationality as a barrier? 6. Do you think dreams can have messages we just haven't found ways to interpret yet? 7. What, if any, might be the benefits of lucid dreaming? 8. Why do my dreams get so weird and crazy when I have to pee really bad? I know it's to get me to wake up to use the bathroom, but how does that work exactly? 9. What's up with having a dream inside a dream? I had it happen for, I believe , the first time last night. I was thinking of something as I drifted off, and while I was dreaming it felt like I was daydreaming about what I had been thinking of. The other person in the dream even referenced it.

Michael

Do all animals dream?

Antonia Clark

Can people learn to wake up from or change bad dreams? But also, what do they MEAN????

Margaret Downs

Ooh would also like to know this!! I rarely remember my dreams but when I do they're often stress dreams.

Lianne Murray

In many of my dream im just floating and watching things, kind of like its in 3rd person. Is this normal? Especially now with so much more media we watch like video games, tv, and movies?

Haley K.

Whats the science about things happening in dreams affecting you physically in reality? Like waking up with bruises or wet dreams?

Bennett Vanderbosch

What makes someone remember or not remember their dreams? I rarely remember mine!

Lianne Murray

I dream a lot in 3rd person! Is this due to our media nowadays? Video games and tv and all that? Sometimes im observing myself and sometimes im not in my dream at all. Its strange to me

Lianne Murray

Oh man, ive almost died but wake up before i do.

Amy Zucker Morgenstern

Seriously, do you think our dreams mean anything other than what we decide to make of them? For example, are they our minds' way of sending themselves a message? Do the same symbols tend to correlate with particular issues in people's lives, as if they are a shorthand for "yo, pay attention to X"? AZM

Steffany Halfrey

1. Why do some people remember dreams and others don’t? 2. Generally how do different stimuli (medicine, weather, sugar, etc.) impact dreams? Is there a lot of research on this? 3. Why does time feel different in dreams? 4. What topic related to dreams do you think most needs to be studied? 5. How do things like anxiety and depression effect dreams?

Darlene Skapura

FTQA do we dream less as we age? And what makes a person sleep walk when dreaming?

Alex Minor

My friend says he can control himself in dreams. I definitely can not. Is he full of film flam, or is this real?

Diane Doty

I used to have the same dreams over and over as a kid. A few were pretty terrifying. I’m not aware of repeating dreams since sometime around adolescence. How common is it for people to repeat dreams? And it more common for some ages than others?

Daniel Gill

When we dream, do our brain waves carry the information of what we are dreaming kinda like radio waves can ??

Diane Doty

I learned to wake up from dreams as a kid but never how to change them

mijkai

Hi Alie! First time question asker here. My question is, do we know why some people dream more than others? I've averaged 1 dream a year basically ever since middle school, and meanwhile I know people who dream multiple times a night.

Grandma Theresa

If you dream a lot does that affect the amount of deep sleep you get.

Archietedeli

FTQA ... are dreams simply our brain reorganizing our thoughts? how come they sometimes feel much more profound than that? what can we learn from dreams? also... why are most of my dreams terrifying? like, what are nightmares?

Alex Minor

Yes! I just asked this too. My friend says he will actually work in his dreams!! Teach me, but to like fly, not work. #capitalisticnightmare

Anne Barnes

FTQA ALL of my anxiety dreams take place in my college dorm room. Will I forever be haunted by that cursed place or can I hope for a location change at some point? It's been 20 years.

Emma Parks

I have been trying to lucid dream for years, please help.

Rachel

I'm not even sure if this can be measured, but how much of what we think we remember of dreams is actually filled in when we're awake? Like if we suddenly remember bits and pieces, does our waking brain supplement the rest of the story so it makes more sense? (not a FTQA, my first Q was about mountain goats liking pee, but I wasn't the only one)

DLC

Hi Alie, You are making my dreams come true to interview a dream expert! I used to remember my dreams more when I was younger. Is that a thing? Also, as I was falling asleep I would notice my dreams were picking up where they left off in the morning. Is that a thing too? Thank you!

Emma Parks

Why does melatonin make me have nightmares? I have 2 other friends who have this problem as well.

ConnieConnieBoBonnie

Is there any evidence to support the theory of a collective unconscious that can be accessed while dreaming? What about prophetic dreams? Or shared dreams? Flim flam or possible?

Emma Parks

Can you make yourself dream? Do I dream and just forget it? Does it have to do with memory/bad memory?

Margaret Downs

I've heard there are things our brains can't "render" in our dreams for lack of a better way to put it. A common example is a clock - like a digital clock might read 4:89 or some other nonsensical time. Another is faces we haven't seen before. Is that flimflam? I feel like I've seen both totally normal-looking clocks and faces I can't remember seeing before in my dreams (though my memory of my dreams is generally hazy at best so I may not be a reliable narrator here.) If there are things we can't "render", why is that??

Lianne Murray

Ok im just gonna ask it, Pee dreams, why? Do i pee in my dreams because i have to pee in real life? Is that why people pee the bed?

Shai s Walker

First time question asker. Sometimes when I’m dreaming I become aware it’s a dream and try like crazy to wake myself up. Sometimes it works. What’s up with that? My name is pronounced (Shay)

Nicole Story

Sometimes when I'm in a twilight stage, in and out of sleep, I will wake up from a dream and go back into that same dream when I fall asleep again. Is this a thing or did my brain make it up?

NanoNaturalist

I have narcolepsy and can start dreaming while I'm still awake but very tired. It makes me wonder what the difference is between dreaming and hallucinating because somehow I just KNOW these are dreams.

Sonjabird

Why is it that some people remember their dreams while others don't? I hardly ever remember dreams... or is it that I'm just not having them?

Brynn

What is the earliest historical evidence that we have of people analyzing dreams for meaning? How long have humans been doing that?

Eli Johnathan

I am SO jazzed for this episode 👀 Why are some people prone to vivid dreams/able to remember a lot of their dreams, and others aren't? I hardly ever remember any dreams at all, whereas my mum remembers them frequently. The only ones I DO remember are about falling or losing all my teeth - are those really 'stress' signs, or just... random dreams that we've assigned meaning to when really it's a mystery?

kexi

Any idea if/how aphantasia and dreaming influence one another? I have the sense that I don't dream in pictures but rather in concepts - just as I remember stuff rather in concepts than in pictures. (using concept as I lack an actual word to describe it...)

Mindy Duddy

Can you influence your dreams, or make yourself dream about a subject if you think about it as you are falling asleep? Do dogs dream?

Isabelle Leclerc

PTSD nightmares; what is happening neurologically, physiologically and psychologically to make them so realistic, and so prolific? What type of research is going on to treat them?

Alice Rubin

I came here to ask that!

Alice Rubin

What's the science behind breathing techniques to help fall asleep faster?

Alice Rubin

Why are some people morning people and some night owls?

Alice Rubin

How can I be tired all day, then not be able to fall asleep? WHY?!?!?!

Mie [me-ay]

this is conveniently being requested when i’ve is back to back nightmares, SO what’s up with recurring dreams? and how accurate is dream interpretation?

Jenna Congdon

Does dream symbolism really mean anything or is it flim flam? I've always been fascinated by the idea but it seems like it can't be quite true. For example - dreaming about losing your teeth means you're pregnant, etc

Lillian Wangler

How do I make them stop? Please. (Name never been said)

Shelby Smith

Why are just dreams just feelings an others are super detailed complex worlds.

Buhbrie

I have a friend that will wake up mid dream, fall back asleep, then resume the same dream. How? Also, what's up with lucid dreaming??

Antonia Clark

that's awesome! How did you learn?

Emily Krieger

are dreams just a big disorganized mess of ideas/thoughts

Meg Ahern

What's the deal with recurring dreams / settings? I have really frequently recurring dream scenarios (e.g., hiking in the mountains; trying to catch a flight but can't find my bags), even if what happens is slightly different each time. I also have settings (a house, an apartment, a hotel, etc.) that I keep going back to some version of. (Name never been said)

Jessica C

What’s up with dreamception? Sometimes I will dream that I’m waking up from a dream in which I’m waking up from a dream in which I’m waking up from a dream etc. WHY??

Arica Starlinger

Is it true that all the “random” faces we see in our dreams are really people we’ve seen before, maybe passing them by in real life?

Dan Fishman

Why am I always dreaming about being unprepared for a maths exam?

Jessica C

Are there ways to influence our dreams without necessarily lucid dreaming. Ie, could I watch a particular movie before bed to try and influence what I will dream about that night. Really I just want to tell my brain to dream about other things besides work!

Chase Penix

Have we seen any effect of aging on dreaming? Do we dream more or less as we age? Does dementia effect the ability to dream? So many questions!

Karla Maria Pires

Why do we have crazy dreams? I get that they reflect our day-to-day life ans shit...but why did I dream I was in a pot of split pea soup with my 4th garde teacher? Mrs Smith did not deserve that. 😪

Dane Andersen

Hi there. FTQA here! I’ve always wondered why some dreams seem so vivid while you’re sleeping, but once you wake up and you try to remember details, they just fade to nothingness. It seems like the harder you think about it, the fuzzier it gets. Love the podcast - it’s always my first recommendation whenever someone asks.

Laura Raffield

Why do pregnancy and some medications lead to more vivid (or at least more remembered vivid) dreams? FTQA, long time ologies enthusiast!

Rae Moore

I’ve been dying to ask this for a decade! How is it possible that you can be shocked in a dream? If my brain is generating this experience how can my same brain also be totally surprised and scared by something jumping out at me that I one hundred percent did not see coming??

Nina Giacobbe

I recently asked my mom about an event I remember from childhood and she stared at me blankly and told me it never happened. Then I realized it must have been a dream. I have a couple other dreams masquerading as childhood memories. Why/how does this happen? How common is it? Gimme all the deets plz (Last name pronounced "juh-KOH-bee")

Chandler Witherington

I have had dreams (more like nightmares) where I am in a terrifying situation and I realize I am in a dream and wake myself up. How does that happen? Is that common?

Chandler Witherington

I have a recurring dream that I am in elementary school and have forgotten my shoes and am barefoot going to my class. Not a question just wanted to share lol

Breeana Cazel

Can dreams connect you with your subconscious? Can it also be the future sometimes? I feel hella witchy when I see something happening that I have seen in a dream before

Sara

Hello!! FTQA here :) I would love to know, how is it possible to have two separate dreams, simultaneously- both just as vivid as the other? Is there a reason that some of us almost always have dreams with a scary/unsettling undertone? Thank you!

Melanie Metzger

Is there any truth that some people dream in color and some only black and white; and if so, does it equate to anything in their non dreaming personality?

Tessa

So I don’t remember my dreams when I wake, so it seems like I’m not dreaming, I can however still remember three dreams I’ve had over my lifetime like they were actual traumatizing events. Smells, feelings, faces, the whole caboodle… WTF?

Bálint Novák

Can we read text in dreams? :) Apparently that is totally impossible, at least that's what I heard about experiments in lucid dreaming.

Ben Golder

I kept a dream journal for 6 months, mostly they seemed like random combinations of feelings and scenarios, but I noticed that in a bunch of my dreams I had an inherent sense of the cardinal directions (N,S,E,W) and could sometimes place one dream setting in relation to another. Has anyone ever tried to map out their "dream world"?

Bálint Novák

Tell me all about Inception stuff! Is it true that "dream time" is much-much faster than reality?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

SO MANY QUESTIONS! Is it true your brain can’t create new faces from scratch, so every face you see in a dream is that if someone you’ve seen/met before?

Bálint Novák

Ok, so I know about some dream theories (freudian, cognitive etc.) from studying psychology, but could we hear about the WHY of his own theory? why do we dream at all? and why do we dream about the staff that we dream about?

Clare Dean

Ohaaay! Why do I sometimes dream that I'm about to die and then in real life literally jump out of bed and try to run away? Usually takes me a good while (30 sec? hard to judge) to fully come out of it and realise where I am; which might be half way down the stairs, crouched on my desk, on the bed of the person sleeping in the next bed over in a shared dorm...

Kelin Jackman

Can/does your brain speak to you in your dreams. Example: For the longest time I would have a semi reoccurring dream that my left leg was longer causing me to walk funny with my right leg. I would be like this in every dream of the like, but the scenery was different sometimes. This kept going until I found out my left leg was longer than my right in real life. I've never had dreams like that again. Was my brain trying to tell me that was the case so I could work on correcting it?

Bálint Novák

Can science make dreams into movies someday? Sci-fi myth or phlimphlam?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

Will we ever have the ability to record our dreams? Or watch someone else’s in real time?

Madi East

Why do I go through periods of remembering multiple, vivid, crazy dreams every morning, and then periods where I don’t remember dreaming at all? How come the harder you try to remember a dream, the faster the door to that part of our brain seems to shut? And how come our dreaming brain is so much more creative than our waking one? Wish I could have activated it for creative writing exams! Dreams are the coolest! Especially in that half wakeful state where you start to feel like you can control what is happening. (Second time question asker, but forgot to say last time - shoutout to my boyfriend Tom for signing me up as a surprise birthday gift! Best present ever!)

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

Why is telling someone else about my dream so interesting to me, but hearing about someone else’s dream is boring af?

Saira (‘Sarah’) Manns

How is it that I can remember a dream while I’m also dreaming? Like a lucid dream memory…?

Alexander Mutz

Why can I never remember my dreams if I smoke marijuana before bed? Am I not having dreams or just not remembering them?

Dawn and Eric Easton

I often have what I call frustration dreams where I repeat the same actions or activities over and over for what seems like the entire night. What is my brain trying to tell me?

Alli Barg

Since getting pregnant my dreams have been SO much more vivid and I remember them better. I’ve heard this from other parents as well. Is this a real thing and why is it happening?!

Jesse Hurlburt

I once heard that the people we see in our dreams are only people we've seen in real life, even if it's only in passing. Truth or flim flam?

James Nance

When I was a kid I had a reoccurring nightmare that was just this black orb floating in space. It freaked. Me. Out. I haven't had the dream since I was about 10 or so (I'm now thirty-... well, in my mid-thirties), but still remember it vividly and feel that same anxiety when I think about it. Are experiences like that common? A reoccurring nightmare that stops occurring but remains in our memories?

Ryan Holaday

No matter how absurd or surreal my dreams get, I rarely recognize, or even suspect, that I’m dreaming. Why is it that dreamers have a heightened suspension of disbelief?

Jesse Hurlburt

Do animals dream? How do we know they are dreaming if they can't tell us they are?

Loz

What’s with the teeth falling out all at once dream that so many people seem to have?

Alexander Mutz

Alexander Mutz's wife, Julia Witcher: similar question to Clare Dean above, why do I sometimes have dreams about lying awake in bed with my eyes open then suddenly see an enormous bug above me or creepy figure in the corner and jump up looking for said bug/figure for a minute or so before realizing it was a dream?

Samantha Deitzel

I need to know more on sleep paralysis, why does it feel so real? Why is my laundry pile suddenly a demon lol?

E-Veh-Lease Sanchez

What is up with recurring dreams?! When we first bought our home (12 years ago) I would dream about this big, unfinished house regularly. I figured it was bc of all the projects we wanted to do in our new house. Hadn’t had that dream in probably 5-7 years. All of sudden, had that dream a few weeks ago (probably bc we had just finished a project in the backyard). But what FREAKED me out was how much DETAIL I remembered from the recurring dream house!! I remembered every fine detail of every room! It was crazy and weirded me out a little! The house from my dreams also had projects that were finally finished but still had a long way to go. I’ve also never seen the house in my dream in real life. It’s completely made up and I guess only exists in my subconscious.

Cate Muenker

Why do I have very vivid dreams in the morning and then forget them 1 minute after I wake up?

Cate Muenker

How can I experience lucid dreaming?

Nathan-Andrew

Yes! I’ve actually had a question about this for years. Does our mind instantly unfold a complex background and plot that we only seem to have experienced as a dream, but is actually just a packaged deal, like the detailed history and setting of a video game? Then the actual dreaming takes place from that point? I ask because I can never remember details of that sensible 1st part when I wake up. I only really remember the bizarre 2nd part which seems to ignore what came before.

What is the difference between a nightmare and a night terror, and why do I feel pain in my dreams? Is there a way to train yourself out of nightmares?

Pascal Perron

Me and my friends like to enjoy a session of magic mushrooms every once in a while, and we always report having extremely detailed dreams for a week after. Is there any sciemce behind that?

Evan Davis

Does eating too much sugar before bed really cause nightmares?

Sam Acker

Sam Acker (pronounced acre, FTQA) here: I once had a dream the day after I bombed a test, and in the dream I figured out the correct answer. I woke up and knew exactly what I had done wrong on the test. How is this possible? Does the reasoning part of the brain stay fully active in dreams? Why couldn't it have been that active during the test? What a useless hunk of meat up there

Jess Kin

First time question asker here, Jess Kin! What’s up with having reoccurring dreams that I can’t walk? And is there any merit to interpreting your own or someone else’s dreams at all? I’m wondering if it’s helpful or harmful to ask my kid what it means to them when they tell me their dreams or suggest what it could *possibly* mean. I am a frequent googler of “____ dream symbolism” but have no idea if that’s useful. Thanks! 💖

Nathan-Andrew

I almost always yank myself out of nightmares before they get bad. I strain to open my eyes so I wake up.

Nathan-Andrew

I never used to be able to, but that eventually changed. Now reading text in my dreams is a frequent occurrence.

Victoria D’Cruz

I am a vivid and lucid dreamer. I always know I’m dreaming, can wake myself up and change the dream if I’m not enjoying it. On nights when I have particularly intense or long dreams I almost always wake up tired. Is there any link between lucid dreaming and reduced quality of sleep?

Christy LaForce

I used to know I had dreams, but as I got older

Christy LaForce

i thought I stopped dreaming because I could remember any. Does aging change how we dream?

Pascal Perron

Why are fever dreams sooooooo intense yet often based on really mundane stuff? For example, a friendrecalled an obsolutely terrifying dream in which she had to sell a house for 1$

Chelsea

How can I NOT dream? I dream every night and they're so vivid it feels like I didn't actually rest.

Erin Sorensen

What’s the deal with lucid dreaming? I can control my dreams sometimes but friends don’t believe me.

Rachel von Morrigan

Just came to say I know this episode is gonna be cuckoo bananas and I’m HERE FOR IT!!

Erin Sorensen

Does gender, hormones, age, blood type, etc affect how one dreams?

Paulina Krasińska-Sroka

Ok, why do I have recurring dreams? Not as in the same, but like in the same universe - if I dream once of living somewhere it shows up in other dreams, even if they not involve the same location? Like, I know I'm traveling somewhere and it's clearly from the location form the other dream, even though it's not my real place of living.

Julie Dupre

My friend Claire wants to know, "why do I always dream i have things in my mouth I don't want in my mouth?"

Julie Dupre

I want to know why children have such intense dreams (screaming out for me and even sleepwalking). Is it anxiety? Do I need to start therapy for her at 6?

Misska

FTQA (Michaela): is there a connection between bedtime and dreams? I find that on the nights I go to bed early (before 10pm), my dreams are more vivid and usually negative. Why is it that when you wake up from a dream, you can sometimes ‘continue’ the dream by closing your eyes? It’s like a film that is playing in your head and it cannot be changed. What’s your opinion on shared dreams (https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/dream-catcher/201606/can-two-people-have-the-same-dream)?

Stephanie Magnusson

Ftqa, I have super vivid dreams, I always know I'm dreaming, and I have had dejavu dreams that always come up when I am highly stressed. Would love to know if there are any studies or others out there who experience it. Plus, love the pod. ❤️

Katy Jurasevich

FTQA!!! Ali, I have a million questions, but first I’ll ask, how do I stop talking while I’m dreaming? I’m driving my husband and my friends (on vacation) nuts!!! It’s giving me a complex. Also, in what ways do medications and or alcohol consumption have an affect on dreams? Thank you!!! Can’t wait for this one!

Is it difficult to conduct research into dreams when our memories of their content are so unreliable? I had a dream when I was in high school that I was being hanged in front of group of people, and I was so terrified until I actually died, and then everything was OK and I felt so much better. I had heard that you can’t die in your dreams, but I remember this like it was yesterday. How common is it for people to dream of their own death and do other people experience a sense of calm after they die in their dreams?

Lauren Cooper

Why are there a few extremely common dreams? Like driving from the backseat or your teeth falling out?

Leslie

As I kid, I had recurring dreams, which started the same way but added more to the end each time. Every occurrence was like a new episode of the dream. What’s up with that?! Sometimes my dreams are small and mundane, and other times I dream up huge amazing worlds with epic adventures! Why do the big amazing stories happen so rarely, compared to boring dreams about burning a pizza?!

Nan

Hi Alie, Nan here from Seattle and FTQA. Love your show to bits and I'm thrilled for this topic of dreams to come up. Can you ask Dr. Domhoff about his thoughts regarding dreams and our consciousness? Over my lifetime some of my family members have had prophetic dreams, and I've had some deeply spiritual ones although I am not a religious person. Does Dr. Domhoff think that dreams are soley based on material reality and the natural processes of the physical brain and body, or that there is a possibility that dreams could be a link to something more?

Anna Frazier

why do i have recurring dreams that are are intrusive?? i have this one situation where i am being a normal human but then all of the sudden i start shrinking forever like ant man in that one scene

Chandler Witherington

Yes! How does our brain realize this isn’t really and say hey wake up!!!

Steven Lee

Hi Ali, Steven Lee FTQA from Sydney Australia. I have vivid dreams almost every single night and remember most of them. When I was about 15 I had a dream where I was running around a war zone with a girl about my age, and right before I woke up, she looked me in the eyes and said “you have to come find me, I’m having the same dream as you”. Do you think we can possibly be in the same dream as other people/in a different level of consciousness together with other people?! The thought of that dream still freaks me out to this day.

Kelsey Caudebec

FTQA. Does sleeping position have anything to do with our dreams? Like, if you are sleeping on the left side of your head, is it possible that that part of your brain gets a little more blood supply, thereby making that part of your brain more active in some way?

Brian Smith

First time question asker. I would like to know why I have such a hard time remembering my dreams. Even moments after waking up they are gone! Except for nightmares… What can I try to help remember them?

Teresa Gleason

I’ve asked questions before, but they have never been read. I had a recurring nightmare from as early as I can remember. It continued into adulthood and just stopped suddenly when I was 32. I have always been a vivid dreamer, but boy am I happy to not awake scared out of my mind any more!

Megan Younce

I would love to hear about why everyone has the same hallucinations during sleep paralysis!!

Kelsey Caudebec

FTQA. Why do I sometimes have super messed up dreams, but my emotion is muted in them? I assume it has something to do with how your brain is modulating/depressing different systems in the body, including emotional regulation.

FTQA. What is the deal with dozing off and suddenly you are tripping! Or in my case sometimes about to fall down some stairs. So rude!

Last night I slept for 11.5 hours in an attempt to get the most rest possible out of my one day off. My dreams got progressively weirder and I ended up having a nightmare that got me to finally wake up properly. It feels like my brain did that on purpose to force me to wake up and not snooze again. Is that a thing? Can our subconscious brains give us certain kinds of dreams to influence our behavior or sleep patterns?

ftqa why are dreams so vivid with color, smells, and textures? What is going on in my brain when lucid dreaming? Why do we have reoccurring dreams about things that have never happened. Recently Dad Ward talked about a dream where she is in a house with a lot of rooms and there is potential, but confusion about these rooms. I have the SAME reoccurring dream? What's up with that?

S-R Patreon Content Dependency

I’m so excited about this, and I’m a FTQA: 1.) On regular basis, I have dreams that are so real and so long that I wake up feeling like I didn’t sleep at all (like I’m actually still tired and don’t feel refreshed) *and* it takes me a while to transition from dream world to real world, like my brain has to sort out where I am and what’s real. What’s the deal with that?! andddd… 2.) My dreams tend to be recurring but also … sequential? Like the storyline continues. I’m not having the same dream every night, it’s like the dream picks up and proceeds to the next episode. I feel like the different recurring dreams I have (there are a few) are like different shows and each show has episodes and each night I’m treated to a new episode from one of the shows – and sometimes there are cross-over episode. What is happening?!! andddd… 3.) Is there a way to make myself dream LESS? I would love to just knock out and wake up eight hours later with a blank slate.

Danae DeJournett

Is it flim flam that you can’t dream of new faces and all the ones you dream are ones your brain unconsciously catalogs in your waking hours? Has anyone else heard of that?

S-R Patreon Content Dependency

HOLY SHIT, I just typed out nearly the same question and I have *never* heard anyone else describe the same thing. I have a few recurring dreams that I consider kinda like … shows? And every night when I dream, it’s like a new episode of the show – and it’s sequential, so what happened in previous dreams / episodes is now “canon” and continues in the new dreams / episodes. And occasionally I’ll have a dream that’s like a crossover episode, where two of my “shows” intersect. It’s the biggest mind-fuck and leaves me feeling like I have this alternate universe that I’m existing in every night. The dreams are vivid, feel extremely real, and I remember nearly all of the details when I wake up, sometimes feeling a little confused as my brain shakes the dream out and transitions to the real world. What is this? Why is this?!

Victoria Felt

I often wake up and don’t remember my dreams, yet when I’m falling asleep the next night, start to get vignettes from my dreams the night before. Is there a scientific reason for this?

Hi there! I was wondering why strange dreams seem to be a side effect of many antidepressants? What about these medications creates conditions for intense or strange dreams? Thanks!

Ryan Marlow

FTQA, some options: 1. Why do different people have similar recurring dreams? E.g. several people in my family have a dream about being at school and being lost trying to find a classroom to take a test. 2. Do some people really dream more often than others, or it is just that some people remember more dreams than others? 3. Are there any consistent methods (practices, medications, etc.) that change the qualities of dreams (length, intensity, lucidity, etc,)?

Kata Zarándy

Oh, it's like a dream come true! Can you deliberately continue a dream?

Kiera McGarvey

2 questions! Why do some people remember their dreams more often than other people? I remember my ludacris plot lines nearly every night but my girlfriend never does. Also any advice on dealing with traumatic dreams? (tw) I was sexually abused and I often have dreams of being raped by strangers or people I know.

Matt Darmanin

My friend always dies in her dreams, whats up with that? And how can she have less violent dreams?

Renee Quekel

FTQA :) Is a struggle in your dream also a real life struggle? I always dream about having to stand up for myself, fight or scream. Fun fact: whenever I really need to pee I ALWAYS dream about not being able to find a clean toilet.

Kimaya

Hello! First time question asker here, for context I recently rewatched inception during a flight, and when I fell asleep I had a dream about trying to wake myself up from a dream, similar to what happens in inception. 2 questions, 1. Do we know why we sometimes dream about things that we were recently exposed to or were thinking about and does it link to long term memory? 2. What do you think about inception, and are there interesting concepts there from a scientists point of view? Thank you! :)

Marie Barradeau

FTQA - Bonjour! What’s up with night terrors that young children experience ? How are they different from dreams ? As parents we are told not to wake up our children when we identify they are indeed experiencing this phenomenon ? Also what is up with sleep paralysis ? As always thank you for your work. I host a imaginary award ceremony for you in my head after each episode I listen to. Thank you for making me smarter and keeping me curious. Have a great day ! Marie

Paul Rosen

Why do people use the word "dream" to mean something positive? Like, "it was a dream come true". The dreams I remember always have something unpleasant in them. If I were to have a dream come true I'd be naked on stage, holding an instrument I don't play, and have a feeling that I was supposed to be taking a final exam but I can't remember what room it's in.

Claire Nurc

What is the mechanism of recurring dreams? When I was little I had one of running along a road in a dead forest with something (maybe a wolf?) chasing me. I had it for what feels like years and years in my childhood and 30 years later I still remember it quite clearly.

dramaticsapphic

Why don't I look like myself in my dreams?

Is it true that we dream people with blank faces and then meet people in real life and think that they were in our dreams?

ariel.vanzandt

Do some medications make your dreams more vivid?

ariel.vanzandt

What kinds of data can we collect about dream?

dramaticsapphic

How does our brain "decide" what to dream about? If it even works like that lmao

dramaticsapphic

SAAAAAAME - both, but the peeing & not clean toilet!!! And never any privacy at said sad toilets

Sutton Moore

What do blind people "see" when they dream? What is the ratio of people who dream in color vs. black and white?

dramaticsapphic

Oo, interesting, I didn't know that some people learn not to wake children during night terrors :o

dramaticsapphic

Are the visions (dreams?) patients experience while under anesthesia "true" dreams? The same as REM sleep dreams?

ariel.vanzandt

I wonder this too! My dreams are almost always lengthy and detailed. Most people I know have badic dreams. What's up with that?

ariel.vanzandt

I have this dream too! There is always something wrong with the bathroom or bathroom stall that prevents me from being able to go. I've had this reoccurring theme for as long as I can remember.

dramaticsapphic

Why can't we go back into the same dream after waking up?

ariel.vanzandt

Yep! I've also spent days mad at a family member before realizing I'm mad because if something they did in a dream 😆

dramaticsapphic

This is very interesting!! That you dream in pictures without ongoing action/sound

Wendy Westerduin

Is there any truth to the idea that dreams can tell us something useful? Or are they just our brains talking nonsense to themselves?

ariel.vanzandt

Also, does dreaming about school EVER stop? 😆

dramaticsapphic

When people say recurring dreams - do you mean exactly the same visuals everytime? I have recurring themes, but they're never exactly the same visually

Ruby-Leigh

This topic is for me! PAIN IN DREAMS! people always say "pinch my I'm dreaming" because you're not supposed to feel pain in your dreams, but I do! I always have and it is very realistic, sometimes I have woken up hyperventilating and screaming because of how intense it has felt if I have dreamt I'm being stabbed or something. Am I a complete weirdo and is it only me? Or do other people also experience this? So far everyone I have asked doesn't feel any pain

Ruby-Leigh

Why do some people just have short little dreams and others have movie length and detailed saga dreams that are super vivid? Mine are the latter and sometimes it is emotionally exhausting waking up after living out a whole movie of another persons life.

Ruby-Leigh

I have done this before! But only if I don't wake up for a long time

Ruby-Leigh

Sometimes I will only have nightmares for weeks and weeks on end. Why does my brain do this? And what is the difference, scientifically or medically (?) behind a dream vs a nightmare?

Ruby-Leigh

Can you only access a certain "age" of a memory in dreams? We got my house renovated 5 years ago but whenever I dream of my house I cannot dream of it now, only what it was pre -renovations (which is how it was for 22 years of my life)

Bálint Novák

That sounds very exciting! Are you regularly practicing lucid dreaming? What do you use it for?

Ella Shively

Why do I wake up knowing that I dreamed but having no idea what the dream was? And why do I sometimes remember the dream hours or days later?

Beckett Chown

I do that all the time but as above only if I’ve been awake a short time

Beckett Chown

FTQA Why do certain faces from my past, even people I haven’t seen for decades, turn up in my dreams constantly?

Beckett Chown

FTQA My mum just died two weeks ago and every dream I have she is either there, or in my dream she has died and it sets the tone. Why we do we dream about big stuff that is going on in our lives but then other time we dream complete nonsense?

Sara Edgar

FTQA, reality jumping? Are dreams a mix of our reality and alternate universes?

Stephanie Trout Berman

FTQA-or (Never heard name)...I had this dream in highschool (I am now 65) but everytime I think of it, I laugh out loud. I was sitting in a field in Africa and all the animals were running by me backwards (giraffes, rhinos, elephants)....why would they be doing that or what significance would that be? My family always has super funny dreams and we all wake up laughing.

Marie

Never had my question the pod. Why do a completly normal dream sometimes feel like a nightmare when you have woken up? It could be going to the store, and i wake up feeling like its been a nightmare but my thought cant remember anything scary

Lily Bee

Why do some people dream in color? Sometimes I feel like my colors are muted in dreams ? And is it true that any stranger in a dream is a face you’ve seen before even if you don’t remember ?

Manta

Hello, I was told that we only dream faces that we've seen in real life, that we cannot dream of a new face, is that real? Also why some mornings i vividly remember my dream while still laying in bed but then a few minutes later I cannot recall the dream at all? Thank you so much :)

Hannah Livingston

FTQA - Is there research on dreams during pregnancy? I’m currently 40 weeks pregnant and I’ve had wild, vivid dreams, sometimes nightmares, every night since getting pregs, whereas before, I only had or remembered my dreams occasionally. Are the hormones at work here too?

Skylar Ward sheher

Why can't dial a phone number or type in a dream? I heard that most people dream in black and white (not my experience at all) is that true?

tofu_bahn_mi

What should we do when we repeatedly wake up panicked from a nightmare and can't get back sleep, but have to wake up early?

Joanne E

FTQA: I accidentally figured out lucid dreaming in college, but it seems like it affects my ability to stay asleep. I’ll be dreaming and my brain will start being aware it’s a dream and then I wake up. Is that how it usually works? How can I shut down that process?

Christina Johnson

Are there foods or drinks that can affect positive or negative dreams?

Christina Johnson

Same here with all 3 of my pregnancies. Crazy, often scary dreams that felt real.

Debi Potts

FTQA: I see lots of people asking about b&w dreams. I always dream in color. But I 'd say about 70% of people I've known say they only dream in b&w. Is there a reason for that? AND is there any scientific research on Astral traveling? When I was a kid (under the age 8) I often dreamt I was floating thru our house, bouncing around off the walls. I haven't had those dreams since (I'm 65 now!). I'm pretty sure I wasn't influenced by pictures of Apollo. Looking back I wonder if I was "astral surfing".

Debi Potts

(sorry)...I just wanted to mention that my dreams are very vivid, smells, textures, sensations all very real. One time I had the "falling dream" and didn't wake up. I hit the ground, it hurt, it knocked the wind out of me and I'm Alive!

Becky Peterman

Surprised to see so many people who dream without color! I remember only one dream in black and white, and it felt so weird to me at the time. I also once had a dream without sound, and I've had two or three dreams that were cartoons. Brains are weird.

Becky Peterman

That's neat Debi! I've had dreams where I jumped out a window or something, did a tuck & roll and kept going, but I've never hit the floor in one of those fall & fall & fall dreams! Guess you made it to wonderland? :)

Becky Peterman

I am curious about this too - as a kid I used to have dreams with the same couple of formulas (flight or being chased) but different settings almost every time. As an adult I've had some dreams that while I was in them I thought "oh this again", but when I woke up I couldn't remember having had the dream before. Is it possible to access different memories while asleep and awake?

Becky Peterman

Wow! I don't think I've felt pain in dreams, but I will still act in ways that avoid pain as though it's real, and I also definitely feel other physical sensations while dreaming. Is the pain thing maybe a protective mental block that most people have but sometimes doesn't work? Like how lots of people have experienced sleep paralysis when their brain forgets to release their ability to move for a little while after they wake up?

Marla Scott Nelson

FTQA. Where do the all the people in my dreams come from? Are they faces I’ve seen somewhere or made up by the brain?

Becky Peterman

That school one is pretty common I think. Mine often have the twist that I didn't know I was even in the class for most of the semester, or did know but haven't studied at all.

Justin Goodhart

FTQA - I can't believe I'm finally asking for the first time...I've had a recurring nightmare where my teeth are all cracking like glass and falling out of my mouth, shards of tooth and blood everywhere. I've heard this not totally uncommon, what gives? I wake up each time in a panic, full of anxiety and it's hard to get back to sleep. Does this mean something? How do you best clear your mind and get back to sleep after a nightmare?

Becky Peterman

Omg yes, the last time I had this dream I found a clean toilet but it was in the center of the main playroom at the preschool I attended 30 years ago?? WTF.

Stephanie Leské

Hey hi so excited for this dreamy interview!

Stephanie Leské

1. How much do you value dream interpretation? Is it flim flam?

Becky Peterman

Same, I had chase dreams all the time as a teenager. Less so now, but how did I get any rest at all?

Stephanie Leské

2. Why is it legit the cutest thing on the entire planet when my rescue greyhounds wag their tails in their sleep. How much do we know about Doggo Dreams?

Stephanie Leské

3. Why when you're being attacked in a dream & trying to fight back it feels like any damage you are doing has no impact? ~ Stephanie Leské (pronounced Leskie)

Aryana O' Connor

FTQA here! My husband has been suffering from sleep paralysis his entire life. His brother and father suffer from it as well. I had it once, and it was terrifying. My husband says he feels trapped and like someone is coming to attack him or me and he is paralyzed and can’t move to help or be helped. Do you know why paralysis happens and how to stop it? And why some people scream and others silently cry as if they are gagged? Is there a position that is recommended to avoid getting paralysis? He says he gets it when lying on his back.

Becky Peterman

Schools and houses for me, never quite the same as ones I've seen irl

Aryana O' Connor

Also- is there such a thing as profetic dreams? Can dreams actually come true? How would you distinguish that from just a regular dream?

Becky Peterman

I mainly remember dreams I had in the morning hours - is that just because I woke up during them, or do we dream longer and more intensely as our sleep cycles progress throughout the night? If I feel like I'm dreaming a lot lately, does that mean I'm getting especially good sleep, or that my sleep is more disturbed than usual? Or am I actually dreaming more at certain times??

Christina Johnson

What can dreams tell us about different aspects of our health?

Stephanie Leské

4. Apologies if this has been asked 480 times. Does late night cheese actually affect our dreams?

Aurora Rogers

Why does it some times feel like we live out what we have previously dreamed. Is that a trick our minds play on us?

Argiope17

What does it mean if you always have nightmares (Not recurring, different dreams each time)? How much does age/gender affect dream recall? Does lucid dreaming interfere with the natural brain processes that are supposed to happen during dreaming? Do you see differences in common dream tropes across different cultures? Sorry if that's too many questions!

Ashley Green

Can people share dreams? My sister and I shared a dream when we were kids and we can both recall it with very intricate details. It hasn't happened since, but I've always wondered if it was just mere coincidence or if we actually dreamed together.

taylor paschall

When I have dreams about people whom I’ve never met before, are those people I made up or people I’ve seen in passing?

Leah Anderson

How have cultural understandings of dreams and their value as suggestions for waking-life decision-making changed over time?

Sally Sando

What is the source of a dream that seems to carry an important message/wisdom for us?

Taylor Clinton

FTQA here :) Sometimes I get déjà vu because something happens in my life that feels exactly like a dream I had previously— why is that?

sageandsesameoiel

FTQA here :) Why are there some nights we remember almost all of our dreams and then others where we feel like we have not dreamt at all? And also, why do I only dream of the most everday things (mostly sitautions I have already experienced in a similar context, too) one could possibly imagine? I am not at all an uncreative person irl but my dreams lack any sort of fantastical qualities whatsoever. how does the brain choose what to process with dreams??

Gene Phillips

FTQA; I am aphantasic and wonder if this is why my memory of my dreams is so vague.

Gordee

Ftqa. Why do some people dream in black & white and other people dream in color? Does it have to do with truama to the brain or is it something else?

Mariah Walzer

I read once that you can't actually read in dreams - that you see squiggly lines or something and your brain just interprets them as words. But I have definitely read fully formed words in my dreams before, so is this flim flam or has my brain bamboozled me?

Elena Horne

What’s the deal with sex dreams?

Julie Noble

I also came to ask about this! When I wake up in the middle of a stressful/bad dream, I can make myself go back to sleep for another 10-15 minutes and jump back into the same dream so I can see how it plays out.

Julie Noble

Co-signing this, it’s a great question!

Julie Noble

Came here for the same question!

Julie Noble

Someone else called them wait-mares with the example of waiting tables, but I have the same types of nightmares/stress dreams about teaching even though I haven’t been in a classroom in 10+ years. Why am I dreaming about something so stressful and so far back in the past?

Julie Noble

How do the subjects of dreams compare across cultures? Are we all dreaming about the same stuff or does it change?

Aubrey Dunn

Do all people dream? Some people have told me that they don’t dream, but did they just forget it? That leads to a second question, why do we forget our dreams so fast?

Erin Hudson

How is it that you can have a vivid and impactful dream but then when you wake up you completely forget the dream? (I can still remember the way It made me feel just not the content)

Erin Hudson

Is it true that dreams are the place you process complex emotions subconsciously that you don't want to process consciously? stress, grief, anger...

Kevin Parichan

Is there any relationship between dreams, hallucinations related to medical conditions, and dementia related memory confusion? #FTQA (I know, hard to believe after all these years, but it's true. I may have dreamed about asking a question previously. Hopefully that doesn't count.)

Sophie Fournier

FTQA :) Why do I have blips of dreams as I'm falling asleep. Sometimes as I'm just closing my eyes I'll see a picture (usually something weird like a purple elephant) and then I'll wake up again.

Alison L

FTQA: Do creatures that utilize uni-hemispheric sleep such as orcas experience dreams? Or do they experience dreams differently? And if they don’t dream does that have any impact on mental processing or brain functioning?

Dante Bruno

For people that do not have one of their senses (sight, hearing, etc) do their dreams also lack this quality? What if they started life with all senses and then lost one later? Will they still dream in all senses?

Olympia Silve

FTQA !! <3 1/ Can one use their dreams to process past trauma, a little bit like the way some hypnosis therapies like EMDR works? ie, Instead of being a passive victim of your subconscious reliving the same anxious situation over and over...can you take control and make it end ? 2/ On that topic, what's up with Lucid Dreaming ? is it really a thing and are there risks in trying to get there ? 3/ How to deal with the extremely vivid dreams associated with antidepressant uses / withdrawal; is there a secret health supplement that helps make those less invasive ?

FTQA: My whole life, my mom tells me she had a bad dream about me before I can tell her something is wrong. Is it just a coincidence or is there something more?

Signe S.

FTQA: What's the deal with dreams and memory? Why are dreams so difficult to remember? I've heard that dreams are the place where our brains sort through memories and decide what to keep and throw out. Is there any truth in that? (name is pronounced "sig-nee", rhymes with big-knee)

Signe S.

FTQA: Why do SO MANY people have dreams of falling? (pronounced sig-nee)

FTQA: Why does it seem like some people dream all the time, and some people never dream? Or why do I have have weeks of intense dreams, and then periods where I don't dream (or don't remember dreaming)?

Suzie Newby

How do we dream things that can’t happen in real life (like “starting now I have previously a backpack with me the whole time “) Why can I tell where my dreams happened in relationship to each other even though they never were real? What makes some people know they are dreaming often and other people almost never do?

FTQA: Is it true that we don't create new faces of people in our dreams? That everyone we see is someone we've seen in our waking life? What's up with that? Also, any suggestions for people experiencing sleep paralysis? I've experienced this at big turning points in my life and would super appreciate any tips or tricks to try so that I can stop whisper screaming my way out of them? And why does it feel like something is trying to crush me?

Celine Holguín

Hello hello! So I’ve always wondered, why is it that someone can have weird and/or vidid dreams, but the dream itself is almost immediately forgotten once they wake up? How come some people remember dreams & others don’t?

Deborah Howard

FTQA One of my teachers at the A.R.E. - Henry Reed - has been called the "Father of the Dreamwork movement" because of his creation of Sundance: The Community Dream Journal, that helped spark the national dreamwork movement. Here is some info about him: https://dreamnetworkjournal.com/@henryreed/

Karlie V

Are there specific regions of the brain that are most activated when dreaming? Or during certain types of dreams?

Alyson Ewald

Why is it so hard to realize you're dreaming and then KEEP DREAMING? Why do I keep waking up as soon as I realize I'm in a dream?

Erin Torres

Why is it so hard to remember your dreams and why might this ability or inability to remember change over time, as I have noticed over the course of my life? Could it have been related to changes in medication, or perhaps to major life events like becoming a parent or losing a parent? I definitely noticed that I remembered my dreams with much greater frequency leading up to and ever since my mother's passing last year.

Ever since my divorce 6 years ago I have extremely vivid and tactile dreams about rescuing small animals. Usually birds or rabbits but sometimes a dog. Any thoughts on that lol?

Miren Carredano

why are there recurrent dreams? I've had a couple of dreams that have repeated themselves over the years a few times, during different life situations (stressed, not stressed...). WHY? Thanks you! (You said my name perfectly in the catacombs episode, dad ward! <3)

Miren Carredano

another question: I've experienced this a couple of times: I'm dreaming, and I realize I'm dreaming, but I just "decide" to "stay" in the dream? Usually happens around the time I'm waking up (but I can stay in bed haha). Thanks!

What is the connection (if any) between erotic/sexual dreams and conscious sexual fantasies

samantha tovey

Do you think we’ll ever have the technology to transfer dreams to a visual format/record them?

Francesca Huggins

Yes! Like why do I have a variation of the same nightmare 10 times a year?

Lily Honey

FTQA why do I always have dreams that transition into Me waking up and getting ready for work and leaving the house only to wake up still in bed and running late

Ingrid Clark

Why do we wake up feeling so emotionally charged about the subjects of our dreams? Like when we stay mad at a person who wronged us in a dream even though they've done nothing wrong in real life?

Natalie (she, her, hers)

Why don't I ever remember them? Do some folks just not dream, or do we just utterly forget them? And my pal Marc would like to know: why do dreams cause some to have physical reactions? I.e. cold sweats, twitching, etc.

Andy Josten

FTQA Why is it that we’re able to remember some dreams and not others? For example, I can vividly remember a lot of childhood nightmares and also dreams in which I think I was aware of them in the moment. But still many dreams slip through the cracks. Also WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON INCEPTION BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN???? I really adore this movie, it’s one of my favorites, and am curious what a dream psychologist’s thoughts are.

McKenna Speed

Why do some people mostly have nightmares? What causes a nightmare? How does chronic nightmares impact the bodies nervous system?

Lindsay Howells

FTQA What is the connection between dreaming and imagining? Is the same part of our brain active when we are "day dreaming" as when we are asleep dreaming? Also why do I dream about real places in my life but they don't look the same in my dream? Like when I dream about the restaurant where I used to work, it doesn't look like the real restaurant, but often I will go back to the same restaurant dreamscape over and over. What's that all about?

Mike

I read a claim in a book (Livewired by David Eagleman) that we dream so that our brain doesn’t repurpose our visual cortex for other work. Is that a well supported claim or not proven?

Can you use the presence or absence of dreams to indicate health (even in a relative manner, i.e. "I usually remember 1 dream/month, and now I remember 5, something's up, or I usually remember 5, and now none, maybe I'm extra stressed or eating something weird/not good for me?")

I have the most absolutely insane dreams every night. They are always extremely vivid and I can remember them in detail. My boyfriend never can remember his dreams, like maybe once in 6 years. Why does this happen to some people?

Chelsea

Hello!! FTQA & very excited for this episode! Is it normal/common to have settings or places that are reoccurring in dreams even if the actual dream is different? Also do the common “psychoanalysis” of dreams like teeth falling out meaning high stress/money stress have any truth to them?

Lindsay Mayer

Any advice for stopping nightmares without resolving the shit in you waking life that is probably causing them? Asking for a friend.

John Shea

Long time listener, FTQA. I know someone who dreams (and remembers) in third person. How common is this? Any correlation with his admission that he also has trouble empathizing with others? Or other personality traits?

Jamie Spring

I have the most wild dreams and almost always remember them; is there a correlation between mental health and vivid dreaming. Will it ever be possible to view someone else’s dream on a monitor?

Pavka34

Some time ago I saw an article where someone had allegedly taken an image of someone’s dream. Was that for real?

Lauren McGregor

I have wild dreams very regularly, they have overlapping themes or reoccurring stories each time, to a point where sometimes my dreams feel like real memories that happened in real life

Pavka34

Was anything Jung hypothesized about dreams for real?

gina.

FTQA: I’m interested in the time between sleeping and waking. I occasionally experience what seem like auditory or tactile hallucinations just as I wake up. Is this normal?

Shannon Naugle

FTQA: What's the deal with Deja Vu? It is really a glitch in the Matrix?

Paige Menking

FTQA - I sometimes have dreams that don't feel that important or relevant to my life but the feeling of them... some kind of intangible emotion or sensation... sticks with me for days. WTF? Why does that happen!?

Todd Peterson

Oftentimes I'll have a dream that includes someone else (this happens both with people I know and celebrities) and I'll know who the person is, but after waking up, I'll realize that they didn't look anything like their real selves. Is this some sort of Matrix-like projection of my concept of them or what?

Elizabeth Reed

I’m in recovery from alcohol addiction, and since I’ve been sober I’ve had relapse dreams. A lot of other people I’ve talked to in AA have the same issues. Why is this, and what purpose does it serve?

Izzy Noble

FTQA here. I'm not usually aware of having dreams, but I often seem to have lots of nightmares during my first good night of sleep after being sleep deprived for a few days. Do you know why this is?

Lucian Stern

Are relapse dreams harmful, therapeutic, or a mixed bag? Some of my relapse dreams leave me feeling waves of relief that I didn't actually relapse.

Lucian Stern

Side effects of training yourself to lucid dream? (I have heard it can bring sleep paralysis.) Should we not tamper with our subconscious like this?

Marita

Oh my goooosh this is so exciting!!! I hope I am not to late to submit all my questions (FTQA). So here we go: Please(!) talk about dream theories and what the current stance on them is. I have heard and read a lot about it, but as it is with research, how do you know whether you truly are up to date? One popular theory I have heard: you are trying to process your problems in dreams, if you resolve them you won't remember, if you don't you will remember (seems not right to me). What is the relationship between dreams and subconscious and what does subconscious even mean in that case? How often do we dream/ what are the average dreams per night? Is it true that everyone dreams and the difference is only whether we remember or not? What is the research on benefits of dream journaling/remembering and reflecting on dreams? How can we remember better? How connected are dreams (and specifically nightmares) to sleep quality? Do different people have longer/shorter dream periods (and again the link to sleep quality)? And of course you will talk about lucid dreaming. Is it true that it is hard to "snap out of it"; i.e. will you have difficulties returning to normal dream behavior once your practice it a lot? What does research say about the benefits? Sorry, this is a lot... I will stop now, cant wait for the episode though!!! P.S. Alie it would be great if you could post a deadline until when questions can be submitted! Sometimes I would love to think a bit more about it, or I don't know how much in advance you post these.

Marisa Asher

do some people not dream? or do they dream mundane everyday things so it’s not memorable? why do some people dream crazy dreams and some people don’t?

Ardis L Black

First time question asker, but I'm very excited for this episode! As a kid, I had great dreams. The best, repeating dream was that I could fly. It was so vivid and real I almost believed I could. I turn 60 next week and feel like I don't dream anymore. Why? If I am dreaming, anything I can do to reconnect with those dreams? I'd love to fly again! Thanks!

Lauren McGregor

Question about night terrors in kids, my friend has a sweet 2 year old who has the worst night terrors do we know what causes them or how to help with them?

Lexy Vincent

FTQA: I have C-PTSD and extremely involved dreams. I have an entire dream map version of the real world. For example I have my high school, down town area and local cemetery all mapped out in this specific dream version of the real thing. instead of your typical re-accruing style dreams I have new dreams but in these same places over and over. Most of the time these dreams end in a very scary way where I’m approaching a tunnel, door or hole in the ground (once an open grave!!) I usually scare myself awake and don’t make it through the tunnels. What do you think the tunnels are? Possibly going to and from different levels of sleep? Have you heard of this before? I brought this up to my therapist once only to have her look at me with this sly smile and say “go in the tunnel” and nothing else lol. Thank you

Carissa Perry

Ugggghhh waitmares!!! Came here to ask this! I do still work as a waitress, but only seasonal, and boy howdy my dreams just get progressively worse in the off season - like the worst nights at work times one million playing over and over in my dreams. Why?

Carissa Perry

I often have the opposite problem, but only if it’s an uncomfortable dream. Like, I’ll force myself to wake up in the middle of the night from some awful dream, and then when I fall back asleep I land right back into the same dream, but it’s almost like I’m still conscious and aware that this is happening, and I get annoyed, but have no control over stopping the dream. Why?

Carissa Perry

Came here to ask this. And how can I make them stop? It’s like I never left work!!!

Carissa Perry

Same! But it’s only ever stressful dreams, not the good ones

Cynthia Michaud

Why can some people remember their dreams and others don't?

Carissa Perry

Please ask this! I think I have my dentist on speed dial because I’m going to wake up with my teeth in a pile next to me!

Why am I still stressed about taking algebra 2 for the second time when I haven't done the homework in months and I'm about to fail the exam, when IRL I graduated high school 12 years ago and only took algebra 2 once?

Joy Kotheimer

Or run/move quickly! Stupid molasses legs MOVE! 😅

Klarissa Pierce

Yes that's the perfect way to describe it !!

Hannah McCain

While fighting severe Lyme disease I had frequent nightmares that I was surrounded by bugs in my bed every night. Occasionally I would dream about leeches on my legs as well. I had these dreams before I knew I had Lyme and it continued until I had completed the treatment. My brother was also being treated for Lyme at the same time, and he also had nightmares about bugs. Is there a possible future where we track and use patients dreams for diagnoses? Our bodies are already fighting the fight before we even know what is happening.

Joy Kotheimer

This is such an interesting question because I do all of these and my POV sometimes switches during the same dream!

Rachel S

FTQA - why do dreams dissipate so quickly? I have to write them down within a minute or so of waking up, before they are gone forever.

Joy Kotheimer

👏👏 thanks for this! signed, your muppet enthusiast pod-friend 😂

Joy Kotheimer

Reoccurring dream Q: are there studies on how common types of reoccurring dreams differ across age groups? I had 2 different “series” of reoccurring witch dreams (fun fact-both had a finale that was markedly different from the rest and I never had those dream series again!) And tornados 🌪- I’ve always had this reoccurring dream but now I’m a bit better at lucid dreaming to be able to avoid getting blown away

Joy Kotheimer

Oooo me toooo! Some dreams are exhausting (hard to explain to some coworkers 😂)

Gabrielle

As a kid I had a repeating dream that was really violent where ghosts would break into my room capture my mom and eat her in my closet. Why did I have such a violent and somewhat specific reoccurring dream?

Adam Foote

I feel like this is piggybacking off of lots of other people's first thoughts, but I have to ask: Do we have any idea why individuals can have recurring dreams? Why do our dreaming brains return to the same sorts of images and motifs? Much more silly: Why do people tend to think that their dreams are interesting but we also all sort of agree that listening to other people talk about their dreams is awful?

Beck

Why are nap dreams so much weirder (or more vivid in memory) than full-sleep dreams?

Jeanette-o-saur

Why do people dream so differently? I've read that vivid dreaming is common for us neurodivergents. Any insights on why that is? Why don't other people dream in technicolor chaos? What even qualifies as 'normal' for dreaming?

Jeanette-o-saur

I second this as I also had recurring nightmares. One in which my dad walked up a rolled newspaper (ok brain) and vanished and no one would help me find him. The other was about trying to get past an extremely violent gorilla at the top of the stairs in my house.

Jeanette-o-saur

Second vote to please talk about trauma and dreams. How can they help and/or hinder healing?

Jeanette-o-saur

I've heard that people reported dreaming in black and white when black and white televisions came on the scene, then went back to colour after colour tvs arrived. Truth or flim flam? What info do we have about how people dreamed before screen tech existed?

Jeanette-o-saur

As I'm seeing a lot of questions around pros and cons of training lucid dreaming, I'm also seeing that a number of us trained ourselves to lucid dream as children to break out of recurring nightmares. How common is it for people to do this without knowing what they are doing? I also trained myself to create a safe, happy dream situation by visualizing it over and over again as I fell asleep. Basically it was fantastical dream-resourcing. Is this common? Unusual?

Shirley-Luz Enombo

I have really vivid dreams with two languages (I grew up bilingual), colors, the works. I normally have enough detail to text people if they’ve been in my dreams. Do I remember my dreams because I’ve made a point of telling people about them, or is there some sort of predisposition for that. Alie- I’m behind on listening so I don’t know if you’ve ever said my name! I’ll find out in the near future :)

Anika's Cat Arya

This is one of my favourite topics! Do animals dream in similar ways to the way humans dream?

Anika's Cat Arya

This is more of a comment, but I feel like dreams are an interesting way for people to get in touch with their spirituality and get to look into parts of themselves that are typically ignored. I'm curious to know what the author thinks about this.

Steven Hansen

I have been to several lectures with neuroscientist Dr. John Medina. In one of his lectures, he talked about a theory behind dreaming. He referenced research that had been done on people who have lost at least one of their five senses and noted that other sections of the brain will rather rapidly start to utilize the now-inactive area. In this theory, we would dream as a defensive measure to fend off other sections of the brain from trying to take over since our visual cortex is rather useless when our eyes are closed. Where are we at with this? I listen to this lecture 3-4 years ago and I am sure a lot has changed.

Caitlin Land

FTQA Why is it that in my dreams I feel like i’m embodying a character and am not myself? Like most of the time if I have a dream I feel like I am watching something play out thru someone else’s eyes

Kimberly Medicis

FTQA. I dreamt a lot when I was younger and can recall several specific dreams and nightmares. Now I don't dream as much, and when I do, it's either forgettable or mundane. What caused this shift, and could I maybe shift back to more fantastical dreams?

Ruby Oestreich

I have been having such vivid lucid dreams and I honestly wake up feeling like my brain hasn’t fully rested. Why does that happen?

Coreen “the climate communicator” Weilminster

I’m intrigued by orgasmic dreams. Does the physiology drive the dream (hormone spike) or does the dream drive the physiology? And is the wet dream an actual orgasmic dream? Or is it just morning wood gone full tilt?

cuxjmber

I read somewhere that everybody in your dreams looks like someone you've seen before, even if you don't remember, because your brain cannot create faces "from scratch". Is that true?

redtoque

If you have the same dream over and over again, does that mean anything?

redtoque

to what extent can we really interpret our dreams? can they tell the future?? are they sending me a secret message???

redtoque

do we always dream in color or black and white?

defnotmel

✨ ftqa ✨ • Is it common that a specific person can show up in your dreams a lot? if so, why? a specific girl who was a childhood friend of mine often shows up in my dreams! at least once a month. she also shows up in two of my other friend’s dreams too. it’s so weird lol. • I was told that when you’re dreaming you can figure out if you’re dreaming by looking up (there will be no ceiling or sky just blackness) or looking down at your hands (you will have no thumbs!) and it’s totally true because I’ve been able to do it and then control my dreams some. has this ologist heard of this? thank you! also I use that alphabet trick to help fall asleep like almost every night 🤘

Joel Anderson

My girlfriend has been experiencing hypnogogic dreams since taking her Lexapro. Why are they so short and intense? Is it harmful for her to have them?

Jenirae Garcia Nabors

(Ftqa. Name pronounced Jenny-ray) When it comes to lucid dreaming, is there data on people developing paranoid psychosis in reality? i.e: not knowing whether they're awake or dreaming?

Eridani Mulder

Why do I sometimes have dreams where pain in real life becomes part of the dream and then is very difficult to wake from? e.g. cramp = getting stabbed or similar

Michigander

Lexy we are strangers but your comment has brought me to tears. I thought I was alone.. I thought this constructed dream space and then sudden terrifying wake up was a curse. I'm late diagnosed at 30 and very much appreciate knowing other's experiences. Thank you & good vibes

Michigander

Neurospicy FTQA here Dreamception...dreams within a dream. Any enlightening facts about this state? Personally I have realistic-feeling dreams that are rather spicy. Frequently wake up inside of a dream and am unaware if I'm awake or not... what the heck, eh?

outer stace

Hi!! FTQA!! For the past few years, I have been having this insane stress response in my dreams where every time I run from something, I think I’m too slow so I lean over and run on my hands and feet like a big cat. I even once had a dream in which I was running in such a manner and said to myself - in the dream - “oh, this is why I always dream I’m running like this.” And I always have the “oh, no, not again” feeling when it starts. What in the actual heck?

Olivia Welsh

✨ FTQA & new patron! ✨ I suffer from sleep paralysis several times a week and the last few months I’ve been having nightmares where I am asleep in my dream and have sleep paralysis in the dream, but I’m also paralyzed in real life resulting in me not understanding what’s reality what’s the dream since I can’t move in either. Is there something during waking hours I can do to help alleviate my sleep paralysis and get me out of this spiral of nightmare hell?!

Camille Eckel

If I do a repetitive task all day at work, I tend to dream I’m doing a the same task. How do I stop? I don’t wanna dream I’m working! I don’t get paid for that!

Athena Sferas

I had something similar as well! My mom and I would be in a parking garage and the end of the row of cars would start swirling and turn into some whirling black hole-like vortex. I don't know how this would happen but somehow I would no longer be in the car with her and then it would inhale the car and my mom inside with it. I wonder if these were ways for our younger brains to process the fear of losing those who were critical figures in our development? But still, why over and over? Maladjustment or some sort of traumatic disturbance in that point of our lives? am ~curious~

Pauline Depierre

Why do some dreams feel so horribly vividly real? I recurrently dream that I lose my teeth and I can feel them all gone out of my mouth as I’m sleeping? Why?! Can people dream in multiple languages? Why do we have déjà-vus?

Rebecca Davis

Why do I never remember my dreams? Or can remember them for a minute or so after I wake up, but then forget it all?

Bex W.

I have heard that dreams are our brains trying to plan for the future/run through potential scenarios. Is there any evidence for that?

Bex W.

I am on an SSRI for anxiety/depression and one of the major side effects for me is super vivid dreams. How does that work? Are there other things that make dreams more or less vivid?

Keta Handmade

FTQA: As I get older, my dreams have become so vivid and long that I often wake up feeling tired because my mind doesn’t feel rested. I also feel like I have been having a harder time differentiating my dreams from things that happen in real life because of how vivid they are. Why is this?!

Clare Dean

On your first point, me too! A group of girls who I hung out with at school turn up in my dreams all the time. I haven't seen them for 16 years!

Stevi Thornehill

FTQA! Why do I keep dreaming of my college ex and how do I stop!? (Ps. Happily married for 5 years, and while I don’t have any ill will towards my ex, I’m not pining for them either!) (Pps. Pronounced Stevie) THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME! YOU ROCK DAD WARD AND POD MOM JARED!

Justine Doll

Why do I often have dreams about people I haven’t seen for years or random people that I’ve met briefly a few times.

Deborah Gray

What’s up with the sudden feeling of falling that wakes me up?

romeyroamroam

Why are fever dreams never-ending? I always feel like ive watched a 10-hour movie waking up from one of those =P

FTQA: Is there any way to trigger good or interesting dreams? And do they subscribe to the concept of dream interpretation.(Asked by my friend Maia)

Brenda J Truax

When i go on or off my anti depressant meds why do my dreams get so vivid for a few nights?

Caitlin C

FTQA: I've been thinking about this ever since the mythology episode with John Bucher (which was, of course, amazing) - is every character in our dreams really a representation of ourselves? Also, unrelated question, but do we know if people in comas can dream?

Patt Schneider

FTQA! Why do I dream in a language that I don't speak? Learning Romanian and I apparently speak fluent Romanian in my dreams. Can't string together a sentence IRL, tho.

Taryn Selch

First time question asker checking in! My dreams are not at all like the way dreams are portrayed in movies and tv. My dreams are much more like Alice in Wonderland, where there is a through-line of plot that just...doesn't quite make sense, and comes with knowledge that makes perfect sense in the dream but stops making sense as soon as I wake up. However, I have been told by friends that their dreams are fragmented, short, and symbolic, just like on TV. Are there different types of dreams? What determines how a person dreams?

Miss Palindrome

How useful are dream dictionaries in deciphering the meanings of dreams? Or can the scenario of discovering you have a big bald patch symbolise something completely different depending on the person? Kia ora

Why do I have really vivid dreams if I take a melatonin suppliment?-is it something to do with artificially starting the sleepiness-hormones?

Fwaeldling

FTQA why does hot-sleeping (eg too many blanket) cause such nasty/intense dreams/nightmares. thanks. Loviathen.

Fwaeldling

yes to this! also like dreaming that you woke up, doing the morning routines just to get Rudely interrupted by the alarmclock

Fwaeldling

what about this idea that all the people in your dream are parts of you... and if this has merrit.. why am I the elderly client from my former gf!! 👀

carly reed

FTQA and brand spankin' new patron member :) but i'm curious, is it true we can't create new faces in our dreams or is it a myth that "every face in our dreams is one we've seen before" also, as someone who knows two languages and saw other questions about this: i frequently have dreams in my second language (ASL) and people from my daily life will use it in my dreams perfectly when i know they don't know it irl... always catches dream me off guard.

Malcolm Peavy

How did you feel about the 2001 film waking life on the topic of dreams?

Jasmine Liu

FTQA (technically STQA but I didn't put FTQA the first time) Why do I get stuck in my dreams even though I know I'm stuck in my dreams? For context, I lucid dream a lot and have suffered from sleep paralysis my whole life so I know when I'm sleeping and when I'm not and how to check. Sometimes I have dream loops where I know I'm in whatever room I'm sleeping in and can move freely but in real life my body is paralyzed and I have to throw myself on the floor repeatedly until I jolt my real body awake. Sometimes scary things are happening in the dream room but not usually. I have only been able to find books in French about this.

Jasmine Liu

Why does Dr. Domhoff, specifically, think we can lucid dream?

Jasmine Liu

Why can't we clap or turn lights on and off fluidly in dreams?

Jasmine Liu

How does Dr. Domhoff feel about Jung's research on dreams?

Are there any sources for dream meanings that Dr. Domhoff recommends or do they think it's all individually-based and no meaning applies to all people?

Sometimes when my spouse is away for weeks at a time, we hang out in my dreams. I have even said to him in my dreams that we are dreaming and it isn't real and he usually responds, "So what? We're still together here." Why?

Jasmine Liu

Why does spinning stop you form waking up when you're trying to lucid dream? Does Dr. Domhoff believe in being able to practice lucid dreaming? OK I'm done. I'm sorry if I should have asked all of those in one message. I'm new to all this but very excited you are covering one of my favorite topics. Honestly, I would love to know your answers to all the questions I just asked, too.

Carrie Chung

FTQA -- Waking up, I remember multiple dreams, but my partner doesn't remember any. Why so diff?!

Katie King

I remember hearing humans don't dream in colour, but I also remember having weird pregnancy dreams of blue flamingoes so clearly we can. Where did the issue with non-coloured dreams come from?

Katie King

Is there a way to prevent stress dreams (like dreaming that we forgot to wear clothes or forgot to pick up the kids and are trying to rush around and and fix these problems but just can't seem to). Other than just reducing stress, because I don't know how to do that either.

Katie King

Does age affect how you dream?

Katie King

Is it true you only dream of people's faces you have already seen before, or can you make up faces in a dream? How would they find this out (what kind of research would tell us this)?

Mark Hewlette

My dreams seem to be so crazy and without much connection to real life. Could dreams just be random? Do they have to actually mean something? BTW, I heard it is good to have scary or stressful dreams. I never do. They're happy or just weird. Is this good or bad? Thank you!

Heza

Is it possible that if you are dreaming of someone and see their face in your dream they are also dreaming about you? Or Vice Versa do people make appearances in your dreams? FTQA

Daisy Amann

when I was 17 I woke up from a dream and I was on the phone with my doctor. like, the moment that my eyes opened, i was speaking a word to him, and it at the end of the call. I never brought it up with him & he’s still my doc. Is it possible that anything I said to him made sense?? FTQA

Anna C

FTQA: pandemic dreams, ADHD medication dreams, holiday dreams: all these have been much more vivid and weirder than usual for me. Is this a thing? Why?

Samantha Freeman

FTQA here!!!!☺️☺️ Why are fever dreams and pain med dreams so vivid and weird?

Doctor (almost!) Elder

Hi, is it true you can't read in your dreams? I've tried and have never been able to.

Jessie Pearce

FTQA: what does it mean when someone has lucid/vivid dreaming(visual, audio, sensation impact)? Does it tell you information about the mental or physiological state of someone’s body?

Chelsea Wilck

FTQA (been listening for YEARS i am so stoked that I get to ask a question wow oh wow): what does it mean if you have a dream and then literally a week later it comes true? Or you have a dream you see someone you haven't seen in ages and then you see them like the next day? Does this mean we are all prophets or what because I am beginning to get SPOOKED

Natalie Baum

FTQA can you be “addicted” to dreaming? As if the dream life is so much more interesting and vivid than real life that it is difficult to get out of bed to face the day. I just want to keep my eyes closed and go back to wherever I was. Or is this a result of disordered sleep (e.g., apnea)?

MK

First time question! I must ask because oh why when I am pregnant are my dreams nuts! Technicolor, feel so real wake up sweating dreams. Regularly I barely recall anything.

Jillian

FTQA - I have long, involved dreams that are like movies. My mom has more abstract dreams like snapshots of images: three birds in a sky, etc. I’ve heard some people don’t dream or don’t remember dreaming. Do we know what accounts for these different experiences?

Sharika Elahi

What do we know neuro-anatomically about dreams? What parts of the brain get activated while we dream?

Sharika Elahi

Why are some people better at remembering their dreams than others? And can this change for an individual through life? When I was a child I rarely remembered my dreams, but in college I started remembering them every night

Sharika Elahi

What are your thoughts on dream symbology?

Frances Hurst Brubaker

FTQA here! Perfect timing for this, I had a very vivid GOOD dream recently rather than the eerie dreams I usually have. Anyway, are there ways we can manipulate what kinds of dreams we will have through nighttime routines or meditation? How do you learn to lucid dream? Why do I sometimes have good dreams after bad days and nightmares after good days?

Lothos

I usually have dreams filled with anxiety. I'm looking for something, late for something, lost, etc. Is it possible to shift my dream pattern so these go away? FTQA

Esme Smithson

FTQA - why do dreams feel so real sometimes, I live a whole second life while only being asleep seven hours? And why do they sometimes impact our ‘real’ life - ie, why do bad dreams put us in bad moods? Or even weirder, why did I once dream someone was knocking on my front door and got out of bed at THREE AM, found my keys and unlocked the door 😳

Ash

FTQA! Why does temperature affect my dreams (i.e. I’m too warm and sweaty and have anxiety inducing dreams, or dreams of people I used to know and wake up really sad, etc.)

E.G. Gidner

Hi - In the last 18 months we have lost a cat and a dog. They have both visited me in my dreams several times since. And I have weird dreams, but they are never tactile. I see and hear, but never feel. For both pets I have pet them in my dreams and FELT their fur. Whats that about?

Beto Gomez

FTQA do dreams have any correlation with memory and the way our brains file and store our understanding of the world?

Jenn Crawford

What's up with the falling dreams? Why do I always wake up scared to death? FTQA

Miranda Panda

Isn't this the third time you've had a call for questions for dreams? Hopefully this time the episode comes through. There are so many questions now that my question will likely be buried, but I'll try anyway. My whole life my dreams have been so vivid I can't always tell what memories are real vs what was a dream. What's up with that? It also makes me feel like I didn't really sleep sometimes, but instead I was awake in another world all night.

Becki Grady

FTQA How do sounds incorporate into my dreams rather than wake me up? Like my alarm music playing on a loudspeaker at a club in my dream.

Alejandra Olguín

FTQA! Is it true that you can only dream with faces you've seen in your real life? or is it a myth and you can actually create faces? Thank you for making me a little less ignorant! Hugs from Chile.

Jocelyn Taylor

Why do we forget the dreams we have?

Jocelyn Taylor

*why do we forget the dreams we have when we just woke up from it? Like we remember having it BUT don’t remember the details?

Jill Lambie

Hey Alie, first timer here! My burning question: If I have recurring dreams about my teeth falling out (the worst!) and my friend also has recurring dreams about her teeth falling out, is the underlying meaning (which we’ve both yet to figure out definitively) the same for both of us? Or is my dream symbolism my own personal little box of mind treasures to find and decypher?

Betsy Hoffmeister

FTQA, long time listener. My daughter has such strong dreams that they affect (ruin) her whole day. Sometimes she's not able to wake up because she's still dreaming the dream; or she'll wake up a little bit and fall back into the dream. When I try to wake her, her eyes are all bloodshot and it's like she's in a stupor and she cannot awaken. She's 17. Is this normal?

Emily Bernard

First time question asker!!! I’ve had multiple dreams about things happening before they happen, for example my very close friend losing her unborn child before it happened, people getting into accidents before they happen etc. is dreaming about the future actually possible? Or am I somehow dreaming these things coincidentally?

Emma Gregory

I have a lot of anxiety dreams. Are there techniques you can use to have more relaxed dreams when sleeping? FTQA :)

Emma Gregory

Why do some people dream in color and others dream in black and white? That has always been a conversation in my family because my parents were surprised I dream in color.

Jay Hagen

Ftqa: what could cause dreams to be blurry, like you're perpetually squinting, or like you'd need glasses when you see perfectly fine in the awake world? (It's like 98% of the rare dreams I have)

Darius

Dreams as our subconscious working through solving the current issues or travels to alternate parallel lives that we don't generally remember upon "waking-up". Also, if we are able to choose the paths & forks that shape our current lives, why can't we choose to stay at an alternate universe that we may prefer more while visiting/sleeping/dreaming. Also, also, day-dreaming. I've spend more time there than "reality". I know why but...

Ellie Maw

FTQA is there any reason anxiety dreams so frequently feature your teeth falling out?

Ellie Maw

Is there any particular reason why some people can remember their dreams very vividly and others can’t? I feel like most of the time I remember my dreams in a lot of detail but my sister almost never remembers her dreams at all?

Between Dumplings

Is it odd to return the same place in dreams on various nights?

Between Dumplings

I had a dream once that was not a dream but a window into something that was happening far away in a friend's house. Called her to describe the room, I'd never seen, and conversation they were having. "it's like you were in the room with us!"

Vero Tavares

**How can we train ourselves to lucid dream? And why does my brain feel like a sieve every time I attempt to remember my dreams upon waking up?

Ashleigh Rivers

Sleep paralysis (I know the science behind this, but it feels so weird and scary, in part because sometimes you’re in a nightmare when it happens). Recurring dreams or themes in dreams. Recurring nightmares. Controlling dreams. All of these related to a series of dreams I had in my early 20s that were terrifying until I learned to control them.— I should have shared the story in the vampire episode because it was alllllll about a vampire repeatedly trying to either turn me or seduce me (or both). Such a wild year and change of my dream-life. If I thought about this enough, I’d have a lot more questions. Such a good topic!!

Holly Hazmat

FTQA! Why do people we know in real life, that show up in our dreams look like someone else, but we know who they are supposed to be? The same happens for me with familiar places as well as with familiar people.

AlyssaMalyssa

FTQA! How common is it to lucid dream? I’m frequently aware that I’m dreaming, but can only sometimes influence the dream. This has been the case since I was a child and anecdotally seems like something not everyone can do. Also, somewhat related, I often realize I’m dreaming because I try to do something normal like running, but the physics are off and my feet won’t touch the floor like the world is the deep end of a pool… why?!? Why is running (as an example) so difficult to replicate in dreams?! Omgomgomg I’m asking a question!! I’ve been listening for years and finally got my ass in gear to become a patron! Thank you for all you do, I love your joy and excitement, and I love that you provoke my own!! I recommend ologies to everyone, usually along the lines of “if you like a thing, there’s an episode for you.” 🥰

Maureen Kennedy

FTQA: What’s with recurring dreams? I’ve had one since I was about 7 (decades ago) that is identical every time I have it (a couple of times a year)

Chelsea-Victoria Turner

I get sleep paralysis and then "astroproject". Like ill try to break out of the sleep paralysis by sitting up and ill do that just to turn around and see myself still laying (or is it lying. Grammar. Help please. Anyways) down. I also get some crazy visitors. Now of course I've heard the normal your half awake and half asleep, disturbed at the wrong time type things. Idk if this classifies as dream stuff but would Dr. Domhoff have any other input? Also what's with the whole like something loud like an explosion happens in your dream and the dream has been leading up to it but the thing in the dream happens at the same time as something in real life. How do we know that something is about to happen?

Katherine Wood

Do I have any control over my dreams?

Mie [me-ay]

what’s up with lucid dreaming? i have some mild forms of it (being aware i’m dreaming, being able to read and tell the time, etc) but i can’t actually change anything. are there different types of lucid dreaming?

Kevin Glover

Apart from confirmation bias, wishful thinking and post hoc reasoning, why do humans put so much stock in our dreams over our lived experience?

Ethan Williams

First time question asker! Is there much crossover with meteorology and aerodynamics? Primarily thinking of understanding winds and how the get effected by terrain or urban environments.

Sonny Pellersels

FTQA here. Just signed up. Love this podcast. Thank you for making learning so fun! My dream question…I know dreams are used to solve awake problems, but is there a technique that helps access that process? And a technique to help remember these events?

Dawn

I read through many of the questions put forth. I am curious about recurring dreams. I have had several different recurring dreams. I don’t typically remember my dreams but I do remember at least part of these recurring dreams.

Naar

FTQA!! Long Questkon but includes a funny thing maybe? Just became a patron and went full BFF (I may have to drop down tiers sometimes bc money but I’ll always try to come back up- sorry Alie<3) I have a diagnosis of C-PTSD and I have nightmares nearly every night (sometimes multiple, and this is not an exaggeration) and that’s just been the thing my whole conscious memory- but most of my nightmares aren’t actually related to anything traumatic I’ve experienced at all? Is the cause for my nightmares still trauma if the content of them couldn’t be further from my experiences? For example, in this year’s (2022) January Exam season starting on the night of my first exam (the 10th) straight through to the 21st (night of my last exam) all my dreams/nightmares were about pigeons!! ALL of them! In different scenarios! All pigeon-holed (hehe) into this 11 day period and then I have NEVER had one again! Then in May exams for some reason it was crabs?? (admittedly, the crab ones were just recurring and not the content of *every* dream) exams already have me in enough of a pinch (hehe) without these dreams Does this make sense or is a Physics and Philosophy joint honours making me as crazy as I joked it would?

Jules Kingsland

I can control my dreams is this normal or am just weirds
