In the dark of night, the Scotohylology episode went live! I’ve been so excited about this one for two reasons: what IS datk matter and are space ghosts involved? And also, theoretical particle physicist Dr. Flip Tanedo is a treasure and a gem.

We chatted about the teeniest particles that make up “normal” matter, the Large Hadron Collider, the so-called God Particle, the prevalence of dark matter and dark energy and how he and his colleagues even study it. Also: vintage insults.

Have you listened? Did it leave you staring into space and contemplating your whole life?

Do tell,

Scotohylology (DARK MATTER) with Dr. Flip Tanedo - alie ward

It's invisible. It's mysterious. It's all around us - and no one knows what it is. Let's have a fun existential crisis by pondering Dark Matter! The world's most affable and endearing theoretical particle physicist, Dr. Flip Tanedo of UC Riverside, makes the Large Hadron Collider, Higgs bosons, and

I listened to it in the sauna this morning. It hit the spot just right. Dr. Tanedo's enthusiasm and energy were great.

Loved this - Full of Wonder But…gonna have to listen to it again as I am not a physics person or a Star Trek super fan.

Lizzy Martinez

Loved that you talked about Star Trek TNG! And I need to check out Katie Mack's book (her two parter episode is another fave of mine). Also this was a wonderful episode to listen to while driving to and from the guinea pig's vet appointment so thank you!!

Laura Houston

I feel like I'm a ghost now. It's kinda cool...and TNG was a Saturday night ritual for my son and me. He's 40 now and we still refer to it. 💙

Grandma Theresa

I am going to have to listen to this one more than once. A lot to absorb.

Mimz

I haven't even listened and I'm already fascinated!

Spencer Parks

Loved it! He's awesome and hilarious. I really should learn more about this stuff but there were a number of topics that were brought up that I think about often (multiverse, ghosts, etc). WHAT IS THIS STUFF??!!!?

James Nance

Her book is great! Highly recommend it :)

Up to the Q&A and living this!!!! Fun and so educational! This stuff is my jam! Alie, I want to be your intern. Here's my resume...I'm 65, retired, curious and one foot in the grave, the other on a banana peel. You keep my brain alive!!!!

Leila Laco

I'm not really a physics person but this was just a delightful episode, what a great guest!

Dorothy Hoover

I was surprised that I enjoyed this episode, really. Anything physics related I tend to daydream until the conversation shifts. But I did enjoy this and the delightful Dr. Tanedo. ( I kind of want to stalk him down on campus since I live nearby 🤣🤣) Cannot stop thinking about dark matter connections like thin spider webby filaments everywhere...still freaks me out Thank you Dad Ward. 💞

what a great episode! agree with previous comments and loved Dr Tanedo's energy so much. and YES to the chat about The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking), read it a couple of years ago and loved it (and love that Dr Tanedo mentioned the LHC black hole generation the she mentioned in the book too - strange fear that 10 year old me had). now to go and listen to Cosmology...

Nina Eve Z.

Dr. Tanedo’s enthusiasm for literally All The Things is delightful!

I love everything about this episode and can’t wait to check out Katie Mack’s book. There is one thing I need, and if any of you could hook a friend up, I would appreciate it. There exists low fi, instrumental, hiphop channels? I need that in my life and would appreciate any links or suggestions.

4 jaw drops, several head smacks, a few chills down the old spine and a handful of WTF's?! Did I pause it about 5 times in order to Googles some of the terms? Absolutely! I love learning with Alie and her buds. I'm looking forward to listening to this one again.

lofi girl/chilledcow is the GOAT!

I listened to this 10pm Friday night on a public bus after maybe 1 too many, and it felt like an out of body experience

AlyssaMalyssa

Ahhh when he’s answering the “if no dark matter?” question all I could think was “there’s no pearl without the oyster!!!!!” Dark matter is the oyster that gathered the dust and slobbed it together to form the pearl that is our universe… invisible oyster.

Emily P

What a great episode!! I just love that we still haven't ruled out that it is ghosts.

Paula M

Looking forward to listen to this one. I'm reading The Disorder Cosmos by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein which aligns beautifully with this episode!

Brettlikescheeseburgers

I am 9 seconds into this episode… I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH MULTIPLE HALF SCRATCHED OFF TO-DO LISTS, THAT I REALLY SHOULD COMBINE INTO ONE BUT THEN I’D HAVE TO CONFRONT THE TASKS THAT I WANT TO DO THE LEAST!!! :-O

I started this episode last week when it was released. However, I could not finish it because I was in a big depression pit. As an astronomy grad student, sometimes the imposter syndrome and the feelings of not being enough get too much and content that reminds me how much I love astrophysics make me too sad. I love this thing and I want to spend my life doing it!! But in the moments where I feel like a little sad slug, it is overwhelming. This week, I'm feeling better and I finished the episode last night. Dr. Flip is such a star, as is Alie duh, and I felt my spark of love for the practice of studying our extremely weird universe return. Thanks Alie and Flip <3

What an absolute joy of an episode and of human beings. I really hope Dr. Tanedo writes a book!

The one thing that my time in grad school taught me is that if someone has tenure, they should be referred to as "Professor such-and-such" and that "merely" addressing them as Dr kind of diminishes their accomplishments. NB that my grad school was in the Humanities so I have no clue if this preference applies to the sciences as well.

Meredith Wachter

I love this so much. Am I the only one getting "His Dark Materials" vibes? Holy shit existence is amazing.

Meredith Wachter

I had no idea professor was considered more prestigious than doctor. The more you know. 🌠 😅

Jakin Yang

This was an awesome episode.

Joe

This was so good. I need all the book recommendations now

tangygnat

Don't know if you'll see this but hang in there. Grad school is so hard and in physics (probably lots of others too but physics is what I know) designed to take overinflated egos down to size. Only, most of us, especially if underrepresented, don't need the deflating and it's so hard to counter. So, let this be a reminder that you are worthy and deserve to be there. And also that if you do want to move on, that's totally ok and doesn't mean anything more than you're making new choices.

This episode filled my brain with happy <3 Thinking about things far bigger and smaller than us somehow makes all my worries feel less pressing.

MicMc

I listened to this one twice. I absolutely loved Flip’s energy (no pun intended). He is so sweet and I just adore people that are as smart as him, but are still able to explain things without being even the slightest bit condescending. He was perfect 😍

Emily Krieger

this was the most digestible, enjoyable explanation of dark matter/energy i've ever heard/read: thank you!

Sarah with an h

Literally sat around the fireplace with my spouse and listened from start to finish on ye olde Bluetooth speaker. Our minds are blown
