Why do freckles happen?? Do some cells (in white or light skinned people) just randomly choose to express pigment genes?

Racheal Davis

So wonderful! I feel like I had all my questions about skin and hair answered in an hour. My fiancé has bright orange hairs in his very jet black beard, and we always wondered what that was about or how that happened. it’s like the epitome of shower thoughts answered haha

Emily P

I am a red head with blue eyes and I learned SO much about how that all happened! Living in Australia, this pale ass gal's ancestors did NOT evolve for this environment! I loved the discussion on evolution to adapt to UV in different parts of the world. I felt like I knew it, but I didn't know it. You know? Thanks for another amazing episode Alie! Tina rocks!

Emily P

Yes, I feel this. I have wondered about SO many of the things Tina explained!

Racheal Davis

Yeah!! I esp loved how Tina was like “yeah I’ve thought all about this and then just decided to find answers” like if we all had her drive just imagine lmao

Alie Ward

The episode is up and we cover this question!

Alie Ward

My ancestry is from N. Italy and the UK and I wonder if that's why my cave salamander skin likes cloudy weather so much, ha!

Shawn McSweeney

Never knew my blue eyes were not actually pigmented. I guess the brown spots and green stripes in them are… Tiger nuts: In Catalan, they are called Xufes. (Pronounced choofas) next time you’re in Barcelona make sure you try the Orxata de Xufa. Delicious!

Michael Davis

I inherited red streaks in my brown hair from my Dad and we both always had gotten compliments from people really cool to hear it talked about in the pod

michael barnett

I really enjoyed the podcast! Dr. Lasisi has a great personality. You guys had great synergy!

Lizzy Martinez

Listening now! Halfway through and learning a lot of great information. Thank you for this podcast episode!!!

Emily P

Probably haha! I don't know if you have this in the US, but our weather bureau gives a window of time each day when sun protection is required (usually about 8am-4pm therabouts). Just slap on an extra hour each side for us transparent folks!

Tobie Tobias

it was a great episode and really interesting!! Alie, have you ever tried henna to dye your hair? I love the beautiful red I get from it and it makes my hair feel amazing after not dry like other dyes aaaand it doesn't fade like them either!!

Charlie

Very interesting episode, I'm not sure if my understanding of what was said is the barrier here so maybe you know, did she cover the reason so much difference can occur within a single family, why siblings may tan more or less <3

Susan G

Fellow redhead (but with green eyes) living in Australia and I am really looking forward to listening to the episode! I live in Brisbane and it is so sunny and definitely not my natural habitat.

Isabel Vaz

This is in my top 5 fav ologies episodes now 💕 Even considering doing my master's in bioanthropology thanks to Dr. Lasisi 😄

Maria Armero

We enjoyed this episode a lot! I haven't dyed my hair in two years, hoping for the white hair to take over as after confinement I acquired a very sexy stripe of white hair on the side of my head. A bit concerned to hear that stress might be involved in this development, but it still looks great and I look forward to dye it pink in the future. I plan on being the old lady with rainbow hair in my neighborhood.

Quincey Robisheaux

Well now I finally know why my hair doesn't glow red anymore... Also that I need to go out into the sun Way More

Alie Ward

I have wondered if henna pigments grey hair! I need to do a deep dive on that!

Alie Ward

She basically said that DNA can be a real mixed bag!

Alie Ward

Follow her on social and tell her that!

Alie Ward

Oh a pink streak would look amazing!

Alie Ward

thank you for appreciating that

Megan E

This conversation with Dr. Lasisi helped me better understand how my dark brown hair reflects red all over in the sun and why I have random strands of blonde and silver. I could totally listen to an extended conversation on this and tbh I wish every episode was a two-parter. And that I could breathe, eat, poop science. We all gotta have a dream and I'm working on mine.

Mangomoosh

Huge fan of why am I like this. She is awesome! Thank you.

Lauren Cooper

I asked my coworkers about the leg washing thing. NONE OF THEM WASH THEIR LEGS?? I had no idea this was a real thing

Alie Ward

Fun fact that I didn't mention: this issue came up because of the show "You're the Worst" after one of their writers brought it up and put it in an episode. the writer's name is Eva Fay, and she lived around the corner from my last apartment, and I've known her for years, and her father (who sadly passed away) was Harry Anderson, the judge on the original Night Court series. Useless trivia that now you know.

Ted Vician

Who are these people? Is it SO difficult to reach down to wash your dang legs?

Lauren Cooper

They claim the soap running down from their body is enough. I was like "bruh"

Courtney Kudera

Listened to to this one twice in one weeked! incredible. Finally understand why my skin 'tans' and my hair lightens, an age old question. What a fabulous ologist!

Stephanie Schmid-Falcon

Alie, fellow fake redhead of 20 years here. Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, henna?

Camille Eckel

This was such a good episode. As always it left me with so many new questions.

Allie Brown

Been feeling super down for the last few months and listening to this reminded me I stopped taking a daily vitamin a few months ago too. I forgot I live in the Pacific Northwest and desperately need Vitamin D! Started the vitamin again and my mood has improved by a ton. So thanks for lifting me out of seasonal depression 😂
