Chickenology (HENS & ROOSTERS) Part 1 with Tove Danovich - alie ward

Yes, Chickenology is a real word. And we have questions. Such as: should you get a chicken?! Chicken-haver and author of "Under the Henfluence" Tove Danovich stops in to recall how her casual backyard chicken experiment turned into an obsession, a lifestyle, and then a book. We chat about junglefowl

Can't wait to listen on my way to work tomorrow! Had chickens when I was a teenager, it was a fun experience!

James Nance

My partner and I just bought a house, and there's already a chicken coop in the back!

Blue Poems

Yayy! I’ll going to listen right away! Hears that they make good pets, but I do t think my landlord, my neighbors and my cats would like that very much!

Jaclyn and her cat Phil

I haven’t listened yet but definitely going to be the pod of choice for my work commute tomorrow. Ahh chickens!!

Mariah Penner

We had chickens for 1.5 years and then moved and had to rehome them. They really do have their own little personalities. We had one rooster that would just do an unearthly shreik at all hours of the day. I loved them and I miss them.

Erin Bridges

So now I'm distressed by the waste of resources used to half-build that big chicken in Fitzgerald, Georgia. Sic Dr Rex LaMore on that former mayor!!

Lauren Cooper

I am so freaking hyped to listen to this episode. I love chickens and want some of my own so bad. They're so cute 🥺

Nick A

I'm all for there being a separate Smologies feed; if someone wants specifically just that, they should be able to get just that. I also love them popping up in the main feed though.

Melissa Hart

I've had chickens for years and years. They're hilarious and absolutely delightful. We bought them as babies and raised them in the bathroom under a heat lamp; they were teenagers in a cage in our living room, and wow, were they dusty. I'm stoked to listen to this episode!

Hannah Lehoia

I want chickens sooooooo bad 😫

Scott Hanley

As a retired Mailman I have experienced my share of peeping boxes and I used to prank the clerks by whistling in a peeping fashion similar to the chicks that would cause confusion and looks of concern, as if they missed a live box of chicks. They always arrived with the phone number to call and summon the recipient to pick up ASAP. Great episode. ❤️

Gregory Kirchhofer

We have five birds, the oldest is 6yo now. I've he's a great time building and re-building runs, coops, and chicken houses. it's like Lego for big kids!

Shannon Peterson Baschke

We have 10 chickens. My husband talked me in to getting 5 Red Sex Link chickens 2 years ago. Last year we got 5 Easter EGGers. I didn’t think I would like them. They are SO FUNNY!! One of the ladies yells so much. She’s the protector and hype girl of the bunch. It’s like she encourages the others when they are laying. She is the first to alert when I’m outside. Then there is Moody Broody Trudy. She’s the “mom” of the group. She snuggles with each lady and will sit on the eggs for them. She’s unassuming and in the background. All 10 ladies have such funny personalities. Our 8yr old has claimed one chicken she’s named Chickalada. Not sure how she came up with that name. Chickalada has angel wings so we know exactly which one she is. She seeks out human interactions. As someone who didn’t want them and now LOVES them, I’m excited to learn more about them. ❤️❤️

Is feeding chickens red pepper seed flakes a real thing to get deep orange to reddish yolks? I have heard that before but never been able to confirm anything.

Bill LaBranche

Great episode... makes me want to get a coop for our back yard!

Isabel Vaz

this episode is adorable aww

Michael Heiker

Absolute BIG YES for separate feed of Smologies and added Field Episodes to the Ologies Feed

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

Can't wait for episode 2! I had no idea chickens were jungle birbs. 😂 "roosters, ...how come no bawk?" Was my favorite question this week.

Cnidarian Knight

As a mail carrier, I can confirm that it is glorious whenever we get chicks in and you can hear them throughout the whole building (which some people don’t like)

Marci Smith

We live in rural Montana and kept a flock of (real free-range) chickens for over two decades (til I finally got sick of them crapping on the front porch in the winter, and basically being an all-you-can-eat buffet for local predators). One year, I decided to order a few dozen 'fancier' layer breeds (from McMurray hatchery) than what our local feed store normally offered every spring. The box of peepers arrived in the Missoula Post Office on a Sunday (we are an hour south of Missoula) and a Postal worker in that branch was worried it was too cold for them to wait until Monday to ship down to our Post Office, so called me at 6am on a Sunday and drove them in his personal car to me!! GO Postal Workers!

Love! the number party, am always looking to add to my list of existential societal threats - now can add the inevitable 35 billion Chicken rebellion against humans at No. 37.

Alie Ward

I’m so curious how most people feel to have them in the main feed — like does it feel clogged? Do people without kids listen to Smologies? Would a new listener pick a Smologies and not know the main eps are much grosser and weirder? QUESTIONS

Alie Ward

I have no idea! But birds dont taste spice! I’ve heard anything with beta carotene, like carrot peelings, contributes to orange yolks

Racheal Davis

Immediately whipped off my headphones to tell my partner that chicken eggs in Europe don’t need to be refrigerated!!! That’s so insane so me and infuriating…. I desperately want to put eggs in a little wicker basket for displaying them ✨ now every time I use an egg or eat chicken, I’m going to feel eternally grateful for their sacrifices. And hope that we can figure out how to better enrich them. Also hugeeee yes to more field trips!!!

choirqueer

Maybe just me but it does feel a bit clogged in the feed to me :) I don't have kids or listen with kids, and I don't usually want to listen to the shorter episodes. I would rather go listen to the longer swearier episodes when I want to hear them again. So for me, just as someone who's not interested in the shorter episodes, it's always a bit of a disappointment when I think a new Ologies episode has dropped and it's not actually the thing that's for me. If I did want to listen to a Smologies episode, I would rather go to a different feed to find it. Also, if I wanted to recommend Smologies to people who are its actual target audience, I feel like it would be better to be sending them somewhere that ONLY has the shorter, swear-free episodes that they're looking for -- I think they'd experience the longer episodes as clutter (or if they actually wanted both, they could easily enough subscribe to both feeds)

choirqueer

I wish I had known I needed to prepare myself emotionally to hear so much about people hurting chickens in this episode! I suppose I could have guessed if I'd thought about it. I'm vegan myself but my dog eats chicken...and, like, I'm a human who lives on planet earth so it's not like I'm not at least somewhat complicit. I'm glad the info is out there, even if it was distressing to hear! I wonder if there's like...an animal rights ology? Someone who could come on and talk about how we humans can do better by the animals we've created this whole massive industry around? I'm not sure what it would be (or who would be the ologist) but I'd be very interested if there's a way to cover that.

Scott Hanley

The spicy stuff supposedly kept chickens feed from being raided by mice, squirrels, etc. they also said.

Erin Bridges

I don't have kids but I listen to them when its a topic I particularly loved, and always share them with my 11 year old nephew to listen to! Can't lie- I do sometimes see a notification for Ologies and get sad it's a Smologies and not a whole new episode, buuuuut I love that you do them so please never stop

The Motley Lion

As a postal worker, rural delivery, I deliver chicks, baby turkey, baby geese, frogs, turtles, reptiles, insects such as spiders and scorpions, cockroaches, crickets and bees. Baby chicks can get very loud when delivering several hundred and when I cannot get ahold of a customer by phone to pick up their chicks, say..because they are Amish and don’t have a phone, I will make a special trip to deliver them.

Michelle Fox

Enthusiastic yes to separate Smologies feed! My kiddos love the Smologies episodes and I'm always having to scroll through the big list to find them.

Melissa Kane

Great episode! It made me simultaneously want to own and not own chickens.

Kasey Crouse

I would love a separate feed for Smologies!!! And more field trips :)

Ashley Sayre de Rivas

I'm really glad I listened to this before buying a chicken coop impulsively on amazon

Ashley Sayre de Rivas

The chef Dan Barber started feeding his chickens spicy red chiles and the yolks began turning a glorious red, def look up some pics, they're awesome! Not sure if they taste spicy though bc if so, game changer!

An Irish man was found dead lying in a pool of blood after he was mauled by a vicious chicken, according to reports. Jasper Kraus, of Killahornia, was killed by a brutal Brahma chicken in April 28, 2022, according to a recent inquest in Ballaghaderreen, the Irish Examiner reported.

Jaclyn and her cat Phil

Popping back in now that I’ve listened to the full pod…love it! (Also love the secret, 100% here for a separate smologies feed and more field trips!)

Red Kite

I just really love chickens! My hens are such fun pets, I’m excited to hear all of the weird things! But are there “home remedies” for certain illnesses that are genuine? Like, I know Epsom salt works for bumblefoot. But are there others that actually work for other illness? Are there some that are just total flim-flam?!

The Motley Lion

Store bought coops are really flimsy, but cute.

Kristen Butler

YES PLEASE more field trip episodes!

Kristen Butler

Also I just read in Rachel Feltman’s (of The Weirdest Thing I Learned this Week) book that, yes, only the left ovary works at a time, and if it fails, the right ovary can take over BUT the right ovary can also become a teste (is that the right singular of testes??) and there have been reports of former hens who have started making chicken sperm!!

Ted Vician

I don’t mind the Smologies episodes in the main feed. I just remove them when they appear. I see the advantage the other way: Smologies listeners would get a cleaner feed. Yes to more field trips!

Charlotte Espeland

So excited to see chickens! I haven’t listened just yet, but a little 🤔 about a fairly new/small scale keeper. Doesn’t mean she’s not an expert but not well regarded in the community I’m in. Will listen and reflect!

Anastasia Doherty

I'm actually, truly nervous to listen to this episode because I have wanted chickens since I made friends with one at age 7 or 8 (named her jelly bean) and I really shouldn't get them. I think this episode is just going to feed my desire and make my unrequited love worse!

Christine Marrese

The aside about the chickens living on the side of the LA freeway reminded me of a short story by Terry Pratchett. It’s called Hollywood Chickens and is in his “A Blink of the Screen” collection. It’s starts with the same event of the truck carrying chickens crashing, but then goes on to explore how they get to the other side. It’s such a fun story and he’s so good that I assumed he’d invented or exaggerated the idea. And then I heard it on the podcast and it was like something magical coming to life!

Malorie Albee

As someone who got chased and attacked by a chicken as a child, I take issue with the way chickens were represented as harmless! They will peck and bite and claw you!! The ending to the story is a happy one, though--we ate the chicken (it was my grandma's).

TheChartreuseFairy

Oh I agree with you Malorie! We used to have chickens and roosters, and one of the roosters attacked me multiple times when I was pregnant, just jumping up at me and using his claws. When the baby was born, we invited all the neigbours to some lovely rooster soup :-)

Lauren Cooper

Broiler chickens only being 6-8 weeks old literally blew my mind. I'll never look at a rotisserie at Costco the same way again

Lauren Cooper

Also I vote yes for smologies on their own feed!
