Sooooo, if you heard the Urban Rodentolgy episode about sewer rats with the charming and lovely Dr. Bobby Corrigan, get ready for scallops. He emailed me a few months back to say he met a scallop expert who I MUST interview. So I'm nervous and excited.

Leave all your scallop-related questions below and we'll have a shell of a time. Let me know if I've never said your name before (that still makes you a first-time question asker!)

Bring it on.

Comments

Lauren Cooper

What's up with all their little eyeballs?

Samantha Heinicke

Why do their light sensing organs look iridescent? They're ssooo pretty. 😍

Amy Albert-Teather

How well can a scallop see with all those eyes? (First time asker)

Elisè Noszko

what makes their shell look like that!!!!!!!

Kayla Pilcher

Can they move around the ocean floor by kind of...hopping around? Or is that a movie thing

Christian Krupp

What’s the best mnemonic device for me to differentiate scallops and shallots in my mind? Where did the word “scallop” come from? Do you as an expert eat scallops or avoid them because you’re too emotionally attached?

Talia Dunyak

Do they really flap flap around the ocean?

RJ Doidge

WHYYYY are they the oceanic marshmallow? Also! A friends mom is allergic to only scallops and her mom’s sister is allergic to nothing but scallops; how?!

Tomas Van Duijne

First timer! How long can scallops live and what animals are clever enough to get in to them? Love the show, Dad ward! Tom from Ballarat, Australia!

Evan Davis

How fast can those guys go?

Ellen Skelton

How sustainable are scallops as food? And are there practices that make them more sustainable like farming?

Justin Daggett

Is there an explanation for the similarity in flavor and texture between scallop meat and shark meat? Am I the only one who thinks about this?

Mykenzie King

OMG🤠 I grew up in a small town on the west coast of Florida (Crystal River) that goes nuts the first week in July when Scallop season opens. I always wondered about their migration and what “scallop season” really means.

Felix Lasselle

What is the scientific reason for wrapping scallops with bacon being the tastiest thing on the planet?

LZ

Lauren beat me to it. 😊 With so many eyes, how does their vision compare to ours? Like, do they have an optic nerve? Or many? And if so, where does it go? Do they even have a brain to interpret what they see? Sorry. Been hanging onto these related questions for a decade, since I was first introduced to scallop eyes in Newfoundland…

Jennasis

Do you prefer all of your lace to be scalloped?

Claire Netto

what makes scallops unique from other bivalves?

LZ

I’m a first X q asker.

E-Veh-Lease Sanchez

How fattening are they for us? Are they a sustainable seafood? What do they look like not cooked lol?

Doug Paice

Why are they tastiest bivalve, so sweet and tender? Also, a friend once told me you have to cook them for either a very short time or they go tough, but that if you cook them longer they go tender again. Is that flim flam?

Jennasis

Best shell variety that I can Google?

Jadine Lannon

This! I always feel bad eating scallops because it's just the adductor muscle and that feels wasteful :(

Laurel

C is the same round shape as a scallop, while h is long and skinny (comparably) like a bunch of shallots.

E-Veh-Lease Sanchez

How and what do they eat? Sorry for the rapid fire questions! Every time I hit submit I think of something else!

Paige Moreth

SCALLop or SCOLLop? I recently moved to the East Coast of Canada and the locals say it the second way, which I never heard before in central Canada! (First time question asker!)

Mushroom Morgan

I once did a snorkeling trip where the captain of our little boat grabbed a scallop, pried it open, and ate it raw like a sea otter. How traumatic of an ending was that for the scallop?

Timmy H.

Should we all be switching over to eating scallops for the environment?

Laurel

How/when did scallop shells become the generally agreed upon choice for mermaid bras?

Christine Wenzel

How old are they as a species? But also how old can they, as individual scallops, get?

Christine Wenzel

Like other folks too I'm also curious on how sustainable they are/can be

Scott Hanley

Must hear the dry pack vs wet pack debate/explanation, and how about frozen? Do they have any flavor after freezing? So much about scallop consumption how about quirky habits in the wild? What makes a scallop tick? Etc. I’ve heard my name said once and it made me forever shy. Thank you Dadward. And I’d like to have a chat about Hermes handbags to dispel some flim flam.

Laura Springer

How okay for the environment is it to eat scallops?

Jessie Pearce

FTQA! :) Do scallops have nervous system and feelings? Do they have a sense of safety or any self defense tactics?

Cian verbridge

What are the ganglia and how do they control everything. I know the ganglia are not a true brain but is it something similar in terms of it being a bundle neurons, that control bio functions.

Jess Loeffler

What sorts of depths do they live at? How deep can they live?

Connor they them

How are they affected by climate change? As filter feeders how are micro plastics and chemicals in the ocean affecting them? Are they harvested by dredging? What's the most ethical/sustainable way to harvest them? Is anyone doing this? How many species are there? What colors do they come in? How big can they get? How old can they get? Are there fresh water scallops? Are there scallops that live around oceanic extremes i.e. the poles, hydrothermal vents, the Mariana trench, etc...?

Erin Knapp

How do their shells form? And I suppose a question to proceed that is how do they reproduce? I am genuinely intrigued by their anatomy please tell me more! (First time question asker)

Sam Burnett

First time asker. How contaminated are scallops with microplastics, pesticides, heavy metals, etc.? Are they safe to eat, or should consumers avoid them? How have humans affected their ecosystems and how bad do they have it? Do they have tiny little microbiomes? Are there invasive scallop species? Does the rise in ocean temperature and ocean acidification affect them?

The Project Project

How come they have eyes, but just such a wee l'il brain? Do they just wanna see things, but not haveta think 'bout 'em?

Cian verbridge

Their eyes have mirrors what? Please explain how that works.

Elven Eleven

I want to know all about their many eyes! How do they see/perceive? How do they process all the data? Do they process it all in one central place, or do they have some sort of distributed network? Do the eyes have touch sensitivity, are they useful for perception of the world around them when there is little to no light? I will stop asking questions now 😬

Cian verbridge

Does the calcium and other minerals that make up their shells come from the sea water it’s self. Like when sea water is absorbed and then the kidney filters out salts. Then does ocean acidification affect their shells in a significant way.

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

Here in the Chesapeake at least, baby scallops hide in seagrass beds, which are declining world wide and getting gunked up with plastic bits. Is this a big problem for scallops or are they unbothered? I know there are lots of different kinds that probably live differently!

BeckytheSassySeagrassScientist

I love finding ancient fossil scallop shells at eroding sand cliffs areas, but I don"t see like ancient mussels or snails so much Why so many ancient scallop shells? Were they the pretty fluted lords of the ancient bivalve filled oceans?

Devin McPeek

Where in the ocean do they live and what niche do they fill? Who do they eat and who eats them?

Lazer Introlegator

(Never said my name before) Is it true that scallops can't close their shell completely? If yes, how does that affect their life strategies compared to other bivalves?

Doctor (almost!) Elder

So do the ridges in the shells serve a purpose? Why don’t clams or oysters have them? Why are they so delicious?

Adam T. Berns

FTQA: Is there any difference between the tiny "bay" scallops, the larger " sea" scallops, and the giant "diver" scallops, or is it similar to littleneck/cherrystone/quahog clams where it's the same species but different names based on size/age?

Average_pi

Do scallops have family's and feelings and stuff like that

Jennasis

Oohhh yes scalloped potatoes are soooo good. With a nommmm cream sauce...

Heather Horton Whedon

Do they have “personalities?” How sentient are they? Do they exhibit any apparent social structure? Is there a scallop pecking order? Have there been any documented cases of scallop bullying? Back when I ate meat many years ago I had a scallop and there was a small crunchy bit in it and that was it, I was done with scallops (and all meat for that matter). No regurgitations. ✌🏻

fullmetalknee

Omg bay scallop teeny blue eyes out here looking like biblically accurate angels 😍😂

Gordon Haas

Please talk about the scallop's many beautiful tiny blue eyes and how, when those eyes see a Sea Star, the scallop "claps" its shells together to escape being eaten by using Jet Propulsion. ( here's1 of several YouTube videos: https://youtu.be/45IdcMearfU ) {You can tell Dr. Corrigan I grew up on Kauai, the home waters of Pecten langfordi, a.k.a. The Hawaiian Sunrise Shell.]

Katie Hultman

Why are scallops found in so many works of art and religious symbolism? When were scallops discovered? What is a group of scallops called? Have you seen the Magic School Bus episode where the kids get turned into scallops? It really gives me a hankerin' for sucking plankton through a straw.

Taylor Faulkner

FTQA: I’m allergic to shellfish. What is it about scallops and other kinds of shellfish that want to kill me?

fullmetalknee

Also are/can scallop shells be used like clam or oyster shells by climate history scientists and archaelogists for super precise carbon dating? Do they take up calcium carbonate in the same ways? Ex. The Dirt Podcast had Christine Bassett on who talked about her research using ancient Arctic middens.

Jakin Yang

Why do we eat such a small part of them?

Chase Hadley

First time question asker and here to ask the obvious: WHY DO THEY HAVE SO MANY EYES??

Tina Hoang

Scallops close shut so tight, so it seems like they would be well protected against predators, so why do they flap around and swim/fly? Is it to hunt?

Allie Brown

Do all bivalves move like scallops?

Allegra Favila

What is the first recorded scallop recipe? When did we start eating those guys?

Emily Krieger

yeah, what Petr said! i remember collecting scallops as a kid and looking for their turquoise "eye chains" down below in murky, plant-filled water. what is an eye chain?? how many eyes are in one? do they operate both independently AND as a whole? do other animals have them? thank you!

Zed Shirogane

How are the scallops doing? I’ve been hearing a lot about how certain invertebrates are being hurt by invasive species, damming of rivers, changing of water/climate parameters, etc. Are there any blaring issues the scallops are facing currently that we can assist with?

Emily Krieger

daaaang good question on the ridges!

Jordan Rossi

FTQA: when we go scalloping in the Gulf of Mexico we occasionally find a scallop with an orange shell - sometimes only half the shell is orange! The rest we find are grey-ish. Why are some orange?

Corey

They have EYES!!!!

Katie Hultman

Wait, I thought they couldn't shut all the way! I need to know the answer now too.

Katie Hultman

This comment is blowing my mind.

Erin Gunderson

Please ask this question ^^ as a fisheries biologist, I am embarrassed to say I don't know. Please help?

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Why are they?? What makes a scallop versus a clam? How do you know if you have a clam shell or a scallop shell? And how do their differences affect how people cook them and what flavors they have? 2) How do they move and where do they move around to? 3) When they glue themselves to a substrate, how do they make glue, how is it secreted, how good is the glue, and can they unstick themselves? 4) How do scallops communicate with each other? With other ocean life? 5) Do scallops fart? 6) Are scallops adapting to climate change? Are they affected by other human effects on their habitats? 7) With all those eyes, can they build images of the world in their tiny scallop brains or are they more light/motion sensing and trigger reflexes for motion? 8) How big is the biggest scallop? Can they grow bigger if properly cared for in captivity? Do aquariums ever have scallop exhibits? 9) How does scallop reproduction and baby scallops work? Are they nekkid tiny floating blobs before they can make a shell? 10) What does scallop field research look like? Where do you get to go and how hard is it to grab specimens? Do you take them back to a lab and keep them in lab habitats?

Larn Arn

It’s my understanding that it takes over 10 years for scallops to be the size that people consider good for harvesting as food - this makes me sad. Is this true? I’m generally curious about the ethics of eating/harvesting scallops.

Nicole Kleinman

Why are they considered fancy food? Have they always been fine dining?

Kevin Glover

Every single one of these questions needs an answer.

Petr Kubik

Like a couple hundred of them!

Skylar

FTQA! Scallops vs clams vs mussels vs oysters - what’s the difference? And which do you prefer? (Scallops are superior imo)

Kevin Glover

Why do raw scallops (hotate) taste so sweet and delicious and all other bivalves taste like low tide smells?

Lee Horton

How'd did it come to pass that they're in every ocean? Did they use their jet propulsion and squirt themselves all the way? How long does it take for a scallop to cross an ocean? How far can they go with a single thrust? What's thrusting? How? So many questions!

Lee Horton

Also, how are they doing? Cool to eat them? (Please say yes)

Deacon Raid

Alie Ward, please join the Wild Green Memes for Ecology Fiends Facebook group. You will love it. Scallops were the subject of a meme about them having 200 eyes but not being able to see why kids loved Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but a significant typo made it much sillier.

Fiorelily

Please tell us why scallops aren't fully sessile (okay, so I wanted to sneak sessile into a sentence). Also, since barnacles and mussels are mostly sessile and passively filter food from the water, how does a scallop feed? Do they just bury their tushies in the sand and eat like a clam with siphons sucking up water like a miniature fire hose in reverse?

Alexandre Catulle

Do scallops clean the water their in? Do they make pearls? $.$

Cassafrass

Why did I suddenly become allergic to them at age 25??? My heart weeps.

Erin Gunderson

How does life differ for a bivalve that can't shut completely versus one that can "clam" up? (I had to.)

Alex

Heck yeah, bring on the sea critter episodes!! I understand scallops have some 200 or so eyes lining the edges of their shells—seems like a lot of information for a small nervous system. How do they integrate and react to all this visual input? Also, chuffed to learn that scallops can actually propel themselves through water!! I thought this was just a myth I’d internalized from my SpongeBob-viewing days!

Olivier Calas

Why aren’t scallops sold with their corals (the delicious red appendice) in the US?

Renee Quekel

Just want to know if he’s every tried mushroom scallops lol

Nick A

Why are they called scallops?

Naomi Jane

Why do fancy restaurants always get rid of the coral bit? I remember it being the tastiest part, like the yolk of an egg?

geo.sassie

Why do they have so many eyes?? Are they watching my feet when I paddle in the water?? How do they work/process all that information and what does it look like to them? I saw pictures once and it's haunted me ever since 💀

Magdalena Castillo

First time question asker! Do they have brains? Are there any industrial applications to this animal? What kind of benefits does studying them have?

Ella Whaanga

What?!?! 200?? eyes?, I second this question

Specs Owl

Are they farmed or wild caught, or both? And how sustainable is it to do either of those? And is it ska-lops or skaw-lops?

EdNoGG

As someone who’s allergic to shellfish I’m going to ask you the left field questions. How old is the modern day scallop? When did they evolve? Relatives? When did humans begin eating these suckers up?

Asha Dermer

Hi, first time question asker :) I completely love how they bounce through the water like Pac-Man when they’re startled, are they the only creature that behaves like that? And is that their main defence/escape?

Sonja S

Are scallops sold to the restaurant trade treated with a preservative that might be an allergen? I ask because I never had a reaction to seafood until I ate scallops in my late teens. At first, it appeared to be food poisoning, but the second time it happened, I broke out in hives. Later, in my twenties, I sampled a New Zealand Green scallop with no adverse reaction. So, I wonder if fresh scallops are adulterated in the US.

Matt Hirschl

Enthusiastic question asker: Are all scallops a circular shape or are there more fun fun shapes?

Jillian Shepard

First time question asker and I have so many questions! Are scallops sustainable to eat? Why are they considered a delicacy and why are they so expensive? What is the best way to cook scallops at home? What is the ACTUAL correct way to pronounce scallops? I’ve heard some people say it with a harder A like in “ask” and others say the A more like in “all.” What’s up with that? Thank you!!

Judith Wessel

When I was a little girl in the 1950's my dad insisted that the tiny bay scallops were the only ones worth eating - and that the larger ocean scallops were really made by punching holes in the wings of skates. Bay scallops are definitely delicious, but is it true about the skate wings?

Jesse Hurlburt

Eyes???? What is up with all of those eyes? Have they always had them? What role do scallops play in the advancement of fields like medicine? I've been discussing biomimicry with my students, have we taken any ideas or concepts from the scallop that we are using today?

Kate Tildes

Actually, the skate wings thing can be true. I live on Cape Cod and one of my best friends, a fisherman, said this does happen.

Kate Tildes

Depends on where you're from!

Diana Deacon

First time question! Just what makes scallops so damn delicious? Are there specific chemicals involved?

AlyssaMalyssa

FTQA, YES THE EYES!! They’re so gorgeous and powerful and made of living mirrors?! How even?! And why?

AlyssaMalyssa

200 really cool telescope eyes! I would also like to know how they process and why they need so much information in the deep dark desert!

Paul MacQueen “justsayinmrmac” Biologist

I’m interested in the allergic reaction I have with just scallops - I’ve read it could be the Maillard reaction from heat or a specific myofibril in the tissue and 2nd ? Is regarding scallop vision in the low light of the deep.

Beatrice Lesser

My first request and I hope this question is ok. The two times I cooked scallops, I intended to sauté them but when I added them to my frying pan, they threw off significant water and instead of sautéing, they boiled. I poured off the water but they were ruined! I’m sure they were frozen on the boat but how do I deal with this? They were no frozen when I bought them and I didn’t freeze them. Thanks!

Judy Lawler

First time question…The larger, and more frequently seen on menus scallops I’ve been told are actually eel. Any truth to this?

Alex W

FTQA, and I must ask: BUT CAN THEY WHY?!

Kaitlin Westphal

Hey how do we get scallops commercially? I know someone who use to dive for scallops and they would scuba dive pretty deep into the cold new england water. But I'm assuming there is a very different method to get the scallops I buy from the grocery store.

Ashley Sayre de Rivas

Are bay scallops a different type of scallop than sea scallops or are they just lil babies?

Ashley Sayre de Rivas

Try looking for "dry pack" scallops, but drying really REALLY well with paper towels should help 😊

ConnieConnieBoBonnie

I have so many questions! Is it possible to cultivate scallops or are they only harvested in the wild? What are the challenges of growing scallops commercially? Are we over harvesting them in the wild like we are a lot of other seafood? Are there times of year one should not eat scallops? Are there any interesting myths or legends about scallops in cultures around the world? Has anyone had a scallop-based deity? Do you eat scallops or does it feel wrong since you study them? If you do eat them, what is your favorite way to prepare them?

Julia Vollmer

Are they considered shellfish? I have a shellfish allergy and I have stayed away from most seafood out of caution, but do they fall into that class?

Julia Vollmer

Where do they fall in the ocean ecosystem? What is their niche?

Julia Vollmer

What is your favorite way to prepare scallops..that's if you eat them of course!

Abby Grieb

How many different species of scallop are there? What makes them different from a clam? How big can they get? And why are they so delicious?

Traveler Gates

What did scallops evolve from? Like why are they like that?

MyShellSpicer

I heard scallops are amazing at reproducing and cleaning the water so are a relatively sustainable ocean creature to eat--is this flim-flam or should I continue enjoying eating these tasty morsels without feeling like I'm ruining the ocean ecosystem? Are there more and less sustainable ways of farming/harvesting scallops? Thanks!! (Also my name is pronounced (Dr.) mɪ'ʃɛl əl'is 'spɑɪsɚ and you're my fav <3<3 <3).

Jessica C

When scallops are flying through water, how do they direct them self? How do they even know what direction is? How do?? - from my husband Tim, we are first time question askers!

Emily

First time question asker! How well do scallops see? Why are their eyes so blue and beady?

Mercedes Maitland (Lead editor, Ologies)

I have gained more knowledge about scallops just reading through these questions than I had in my brain before. I didn't know I needed to know what the heck scallops are up to.

Samuel Pate

Hi Alie. I’m not the biggest fan of pan seared scallops, but I do enjoy a buttery, well browned and quartered morsel on occasion. My wife and I recently tried a new Mediterranean restaurant in Austin (Graci) and scallops with mashed potatoes was on the menu for $28. I thought - OK - i’ll

The Joyful Spitfire

First time question asker here! I saw Squirrelbeer23’s question about eyes and googled it. MISTAKE OMG. How are these creatures an animal and not just the newest monster of my nightmares? Also - 200 itty bitty blue eyes seems like it would suck to get glasses. Why are they blue eyes and not another color?

Samuel Pate

…..get the scallops and eat two or three of them and take the leftover few home for another meal. My plate included two small perfectly seared scallops on a buttery bed of garlic mashed potatoes - everything was delicious. Question: What is the correct number of scallops that should be served to the discriminating diner?

Sarah Meaden

In your opinion, what is the best unit of measurement scallops should be sold in? Pounds, number of scallops? I'm clearly thinking of Joel Mann on the Judge John Hodgman podcast and his "gallon of scallops".

Mercedes Maitland (Lead editor, Ologies)

Ooooh good question. I wonder if they have a similar culinary history to lobster. I do know they show up in a lot of archaeological middens (trash heaps) though

Kyla Kelly

I know that the part we eat is called the adductor muscle. Why is it SOOOO large compared to other shellfish. Also, why don't we eat the other part of the scallop like we do for oysters?

Kyla Kelly

Also, lets talk HABs (harmful algal blooms). How susceptible are scallops to accumulating algal toxins compared to other shellfish. P.S. Alie, pls slide into my DMs for a phycology episode @kylakelly13 on twitter

Madeline Moison

First time question asker. How do they develop from tiny little scallop eggs to fill grown adults? How do their shells form as they grow?

Underwater Corvid

How deep do they live? And how shallow? Do they have a depth range/temperature? Does it fluctuate with seasons? Does it affect their taste? I had a diver in Maine say the best way to eat them was fresh during a dive while still underwater. Thoughts?

Mo

First time question asker. How are the two shells connected to each other and why does only one side open and close? Do they have a little muscle hinge? I mean, they are attached to the body, so I guess they are sandwiched by their shells and the body is holding them together. But then why aren't they round and/or able to open their shells all the way around. Does it have to do with their body structure where some parts need more 'support'?

Mark Hewlette

I noticed someone else asked the same question but I'll pile on - why don't we eat the rest of the scallop? It seems we only eat a portion (adductor muscle?)unlike oysters clams and other shelled creatures. These guys can actually swim? Seems their shells vary quite a bit - I assume these are different species? Can you tell us about the variety of shell differences? I think I saw some scallop shells in Australia that were flat, smooth and roundish. Thank you!

Chris Whitman

From an anthropology perspective, what culture(s) first started using scallops for food, and/or first started using their shells for jewelry?

Chris Love

As a chef I have always been curious about this: why is it that we as a species tend to eat only the inductor muscle of a scallop? Am I completely misguided in this thought? As a food source we look to oysters, mussels, and clams as something that we consume all of the creature.

Milan Ilnyckyj

Are they related to shipworms (which inspired the tunneling shield used to make the first ever underwater tunnel under the Thames)? Have there been other technological offshoots from bivalves? Can the cement they use to stick to rocks be used medically or dentally?

Mary Long

Why do scallops have a sweeter taste than oysters?

Findlay Munro

How do scallops breed? As an animal I assume is anchored in place during their adult life, do they release mobile gametes that find each other? Are scallops (and other sessile molluscs) prone to inbreeding if they can only find and mate with those in their immediate surroundings? At what age does a scallop become sexually mature? So many sexual scallop questions!

Valerie Bertha

Do scallops change their sex like oysters? And if so, what prompts them?

The Aerial Mapper

First time question asker! What is the difference between oysters and scallops? How and when did scallops evolve?

Colby Evans

FTQA. Do they make sounds? Is there another mechanism they use for communication like smell to find a mate?

Lee Wang

FTQA: Are these the ones with eyes and the feet? Can we actually see them walking in real time (i.e. not in time lapse)?

Esohn

Just- how do they move?

Heather M

Just today I was reading that, unlike most bivalves, scallops have eyes...lots and lots of eyes. And really complex eyes. Would love to learn more about how they came to have them and how they use them.

Michael Wilbur

Do they help filter and clean water like oysters? And if so, how do they do that? And where do the toxins end up?

Hannah Boyd

What's up with their eyes? I've heard they have like a million eyes.

Hannah Boyd

Why do scallops taste so good? When did we figure out we could eat them?

Mark Schurmann

Why don’t we eat the whole thing like clams or oysters?

Marika Hambrook

That’s crazy! What are they using all those eyes for?!

Sharika Elahi

Where do most of the scallops we eat come from? Are there commercial scallop harvesting or farming operations concentrated in any one place, or is it all over? Curious about what the scallop industry is like

Amanda Smith

FTQA: Sea scallops versus bay scallops… Are they genetically different, or is their huge size difference a product of their environment? Any weird differences we should know about?

Savannah

How do scallops and other bivalves cope with acidifying oceans?

Olivia

im a first time question asker: what happens to a scallop that cracks its shell? does it continue to live after being injured

Caitlin Fitz Gerald

OK, so it's not a question per se, but I absolutely needed to share this 2001 Australian hiphop song about scallops that my friend and I have been sort of obsessed with for nearly a quarter of a century: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yKY32G-zE To get to the truly dynamite chorus with the rather surprising pronunciation of the word 'scallops' you can skip to 1:30.

Caitlin Fitz Gerald

This is an actual question, sort of a variant on the pop culture question often asked: scallop shells appear in so many works of art, crests, etc. as both symbols and just decoration. Does the expert have a favorite use of scallop shells in art or historical crests, etc.?

Eric Purviance

First time with a question. When diving off piers in the Pacific, we used to eat scallops raw underwater. Can you still eat raw scallops anywhere? Thanks Alie, cheers!

Pidgey koto

Animal Crossing joke question: Does an otter ever come up to the researcher and ask if they can have the scallop they're holding? But for real, do they run into otters? (1st time)

Pidgey koto

Also, why do some of them have giant hairs while other scilia are tiny? Would the be considered eyelashes and a mustache?

Nathan Marion

What is the researcher’s favourite way to eat scallops?

Chelsea Evans

Do scallops have any way of communicating with each other?

Carole Gabrielson

First-time QA: Can scallops produce pearls? How do they differ from pearls from oysters? How can you tell which bi-valve created the pearl? Are they just as valuable as an oyster's pearls?

Marianne Thomas

Why do they have sex? Do all bivalves have sex? It just seems so... unnecessary? Maybe I just answered my own question... Also not a question but my dog's favourite toy is a scallop shell he likes to scratch like he's the world's most annoying DJ & it's hilarious, adorable, & means I will never know peace. I hope for their sanity the expert does not have a scallop loving pet

Katie Stalder

FTQA - What is the best nickname for scallops and why is it Marshmallows of the Sea?!

Justin Schilling

Are scallops amenable to aquaculture, as oysters and clams are to varying degrees? If so, is anyone farming scallops?

curly fry

What is the deal with their weird little teeth thingys

curly fry

How do you tell real scallops from fake scallops?

curly fry

Is it ethical to eat them? Aka (are they endangered, caught in inhumane ways that interfere with ocean habitats, ect.)

Courtney Leftwich

What other ocean creatures eat scallops and how?
