They have some great new info in there about where ticks tend to be found and how to avoid them getting a nibble!

This is helpful im camping right now :)

My field season starts in two weeks: perfect timing! Every year I have played these episodes for the new field biologists I train since these were first aired, and I will continue to do so. What a gift—thank you!

Kari Henke

I listened to these episodes shortly after getting Lyme in 2019! Can’t wait to hear the updates and would also love to hear some research on Southern tick-associated rash illness

Adam T. Berns

Any push to bring back the Lyme disease vaccine they used to have for people that was discontinued (for humans) , allegedly for not being profitable enough, despite being highly effective?

Alie Ward

YAAAY! I wanted to smash them into one episode and add updates for this very reason! Please pass them on to whomever could use them.

Alie Ward

I am so sorry you got Lyme! How were you feeling then and how long did it take to recover (hoping that you have...)

Alie Ward

There is some new info on vaccinating some hosts, which we added into this re-release!

Kimberly Butts

I just came here to say that I giggled like a school girl when I discovered the mash up of two of my fav podcasts happened recently. DADWARD and RADIOLAB!!!! 💙

Linda Walz

I listened to this and squirmed all day long, thinking of ticks in crevices!

Nick Nolan

I grew up in upstate NY, and i have had lyme disese many times. It sucks and i cant wate for a vaccine. If one is developed will it be less effective for me or would you think my exposure could help? Also thank you Alie for such an amazeing podcast. I cant tell you how much i love every episode

Charlotte Fjelkegård

I can usually find it in my heart to love all kinds of weird and wonderful critters. But ticks and lyme disease make it hard. :( Usually I get one or two ticks each year thanks to all the roe deer* passing through the garden but so far I've been spared from getting lyme disese. Still, the the itching is brutal! (Roe deer = tick taxi.)

Marie

I work with parasites and insects and love them but ticks can literally go where the sun dont shine and i hate then and fear them with all of me. I have a stress reaction to them

Scott Hanley

I’m sending this to all my foes. Thank you for that suggestion. ❤️

EdNoGG

I’m from Connecticut, and I’ve always found it so fascinating there a disease first discovered in place I’ve beach at for many years. Makes you think.

Mercedes Maitland (Lead editor, Ologies)

Also I grew up one town over from Powassan and had never heard of Powassan disease until Ologies. So I suppose the town is doing a great PR job on that one.

Mary Concannnon

Tell me all about that crazy disease were you become allergic to meat after getting bitten by a tick!! It’s pretty common in the St. Louis region where I live.

Cindy K

Thank you so much for this! New-ish patron, after my 19yo daughter got me clued in to your podcast!

Katie King

Great info! I know that there are some citizen science research programs where you can submit pictures of any ticks you find and technicians will tell you what species it is (helpful to let you know which diseases may be associated with it). I'm not sure the program name in the US, but in Canada we have eTick.

As a gal that has Alpha Gal - I'm always worried when the discussion around tickbourne diseases and illnesses that Lyme gets the full spotlight. There are slews of people that can no longer consume any mammalian products, thanks to a tick bite. Jello? Nope. Cheese? Nope. Pork BBQ? Nope. Let's get the word out about Alpha Gal and how quickly it is spreading and how poor the diagnoses are if the victim or their healthcare professionals aren't familiar with it.

Between Dumplings

Alpha-gal is quite dangerous as the onset can be delayed. The Lone Star tick carries it (named for the large star ⭐️ shape on the tick’s back). It causes one to have anaphylaxis when eating meat.

Between Dumplings

So sorry! Yes, the delayed onset is baffling and also the “I’ve always eaten steak and never had allergic reaction ..• seldom do you hear “have you been hiking recently?” Next.

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

No cheese? Omg I hope life gives you something cool to make up for it! Like, always having flawless hair or always finding close parking.

Kpelliss

Dang! I left my Crevices t-shirt in Baja.

Milan Ilnyckyj

I can't listen to a whole episode like this, but I'd love if someone can summarize the techniques (specific chemical repellants included) to keep these motorforkers off as much as can be humanly managed

Between Dumplings

Lone Star Tick / alpha-gal is more Widespread. They think the warming climate increases their habitat.

Sam Bringman

Had to listen to Ticks by brad paisley after this episode

Re: gender neutral version of sugar mamma Glucose Guardian. Your welcome. ;)

Alie, when you talked about Ukraine towards the end of the episode, you said "the Ukraine" instead of just "Ukraine". If Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union, "the Ukraine" would be correct.

Just came here to say that guineafowl are 63x better than chickens at eating ticks (and controlling chiggers). Of course they are 63x louder, as well. I love my guineas sooo much.
