We did it. Y’all, Pectinidology with Dr. Sam Lynch is live and it’s all about SCALLOPS. What are these beautiful bivalves and why do we wear their bones as bras? Why do they have so many eyes? How are their populations doing? And a little section from chef Miles Thompson on how to harvest & cook them (with a skip-ahead warning for vegetarians.)

Did you listen? Anyone live near a scallop habitat? Also there is a TMI secret all about the last few weeks that I almost cut but decided to leave in because one person’s mental/health stuff can sometimes help another and hopefully it does.

Okay enjoy and thank you for being here, Patrons. You make the show what it is.

Ps: Oh and a new Smologies this week! We are gearing up to make a new podcast feed just for Smologies, with weekly releases, so they’ll no longer be in the Ologies feed for the listeners that don’t partake in the G-rated re-cuts. I worry every day that it annoys non-Smologies listeners to have them pop up, and hopefully this will please everyone. Always love your thoughts on that.

Pectinidology (SCALLOPS) with Dr. Samantha Lynch - alie ward

They clap. They swim. They have dozens of eyes and 2 million babies. They are scallops. Pectinidologist Dr. Samantha Lynch climbs aboard to share stories of theft on the brackish seas, gossip about scallops vs. oysters, ponderings on Disney bras, months without Rs, bay scallops, sea scallops, filter

Is it true that many scallops sold at restaurants are stingray wings chopped up by a cookie cutter?

Donoiw

I already had some scallops on order for my aquarium (well, little clams but they don't know that). A few filter feeders for my little ecosystem seemed like a good idea. As always, Thanks Dad Ward. I hope the "brain zaps" are gone and food commercials don't make you want to cry.

Kate Tildes

I live on Cape Cod and we have scallops!

Alie Ward

Hi there — the episode is live (we did the call for questions about a month ago) but we DO address this in the episode!

Alie Ward

Okay buuuut: how do you pronounce them?

Donoiw

*HolyShit. Dad Ward spoke to you. Play it cool, play it cool* "You too" ...😑

Rik

It has no arrrrrss so scallops go un mangled!

Alie Ward

what is that from and why didn't we use it as a drop

JENN 'Benthopelagic squirrel' ALVAREZ

Just finished listening while on my way to my doc apt. Loved it! I don't eat scallops so I skipped over the cooking part (plus my adhd wishes me not to cook as does the local fire department😝) I hope your electric meat computer gets less wonky soon (medically speaking) and put on your lotion! ILY dad Ward! Happy early father's day! ❤️❤️❤️

Nick A

I want a bucket of garlic fries

Kate Tildes

Yes. I grew up in Ohio, spent time during summer on Cape, so I actually pronounce it like Cape Codders.

Doug Paice

So, just discovered that American English and Australian English pronounce Scallops differently (the first few minutes were a struggle, but then I got used to it). We say it as though it's "scollops". Wondering if that's an Australianism, or UK? Also do you also pronounce the "a" as "a" with potato scallops and/or scalloped potatoes?

Ashlin

Sorry not sorry I have to jump in here with this very important question about scallops: but can they why? EDIT: I just realised this episode is already out but I live in hope that this is answered! 🤣

Scott Hanley

Scallop, here in the US, for both bivalves and potatoes, rhymes with gallops.

Emmalee Jones

Omg when you started talking about the scallops wearing bows I was (mentally) yelling “Alice In Wonderland!!” and I’m SO glad someone finally pointed it out. That little cartoon-within-a-cartoon was Watership Down-level traumatising as a child

Duane Hook

Mortified first-time question-asker fail. Thanks Dad!

As a gal who isn’t a big fan of seafood/shellfish, I loved this episode! And thank you for the secret. Biggest virtual hug coming your way to my favourite PodDad 🤍

This was spect(inodology)actular! Thank you so much for including the content warning about the part with the chef, I was able to skip that and enjoy the episode. Also, I did a little extracurricular investigation and learned that scallops have religious significance to Christians, which was news to me as a Jew!

Hankie Mundane

True story: I waited on George Lucas in the early 2000’s in SF and he ordered the ‘scollops’ rather than scallops.

Alie Ward

I DID ask this and Sam had no idea what I was talking about so I cut that part

Alie Ward

Thank you so much for listening, friend

Alie Ward

Is he a New Englander? Brb, off to Google

I thoroughly enjoyed your educational discussion with Dr. Lynch on this topic. However, I was confused by her treatment of titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide as metallic materials. Those are oxides with very different electronic structures compared to say, metallic silver nanoparticles, though they all may be impactful to biological processes. Sorry to be nit picky but as a materials scientist I should speak up!

My teen and tween and I loved this episode! I'm glad to hear that they are more sustainable to eat than other fish! I largely have up fish after Ayanna's episode. But... now after learning scallops have eyes (!!), I don't WANT to eat them anymore! 😭

Daniel J McDonald

I loved all of the talk about scallops, which are so strange and wonderful. But the most moving part of the show for me was when your guest described the joy and wonder of being the sole human privy to a timeless, natural event. I know this feeling well but have not had words for it before, and it was such a joy to hear it expressed with such simple precision and palpable feeling.

Marcus Hollyer

I will never look at scallops the same way and will be whipping out the "scallops swim, oysters stay put" factoid at parties (I'm a hoot)

Holden A. Goose

I watched the video of a swimming scallop on the instagram and.. I will never be the same again.

Max G

Another example of scallops in media that wasn’t discussed is the episode of SpongeBob where he and Patrick adopt a baby scallop and it poops so much that the diapers require heavy machinery 💩 https://youtu.be/FmwgvGisWlY

Kate Tildes

I'm honored you included my thoughts! ♥️

Kate Tildes

AND you pronounced my name correctly! Thanks Dad!

In an aside Alie mentioned Glen Keane and a "need to do an episode" on aphantasia. I recommend contacting Dr. John Medina who is deep into brain science and an engaging speaker and person. (wondrium.com/john-medina; youtu.be/ELOXxwyRN74; substack.com/@johnmedina)

Alieeee!!! In re. sodium(?) tripolyphosphate and the scary stuff it’s used in… Water is used in SO MANY awful things, but I’m drinking a refreshing glass right now!!! 🤓
