Okay, the thrilling and spooky conclusion of what it’s like to be a witch, with author and witch Fio Gede Parma. This conclusion is wall-to-wall Patreon questions, and we cover the witch trials, plague facts, wardrobe, movie trivia, some bonkers hallucinogenic facts, celebrity witches, the ins-and-outs of breathwork physiology, sexy witches, and more.

I know these two episodes were a bit different than our usual, but I was aiming for inclusion of an actual witch’s lived experience and faith-based beliefs, so I hope it provides a window into the culture of folks who have been historically misrepresented and persecuted.

Discuss below, and get ready for a return to format with a very academic look at a tasty topic next week.

How was I supposed to ask questions as intelligent as that guest was? "Witch" was misleading in a way. Great listen! I was not expecting to care so much.

Gregor

This was a fabulous pair of episodes, treating thoughtfully and intelligently with a topic that's too often sensationalized and difficult to find solid information about. I'm looking for Fio Gede Parma's book now!

Margaret Downs

Totally wouldn't have guessed I'd be interested, but I listened anyway, and the lead in to their "best thing" nearly made me cry and was a needed reminder to find things to be in awe of.

Ashley Green

These 2 episodes are now in my top favorite episodes!! What a fascinating topic. I learned so much about witches that I never knew. I think it is very interesting the intersections between witches and feminism.

MissChris

Absolutely fascinating couple of episodes. Thank you!

Maria Armero

These two episodes were fun and the amount of positivity within them really warmed my heart. Thank you Fio and Alie.

Lindsay Thomas

These may not have been standard 'sciencey' episodes, but I listen to this podcast to learn and I learned a lot from Fio. Amazing guest, amazing episodes. Keep up the good work! 😊

Patent Plastics

I’m sorry if you got a hard time from the masses on this episode. I’m a PhD in microbiology and cell biology and an atheist but I learned a lot from them. It’s always fun to talk to an expert in something.

Iso partee

I immediately went and bought the Spiral dance book!!

OneHappyPuppy

Thanks for always making me think!

Kathryn Knopinski

So good! You found the perfect guest and I need to re-listen approximately 3 more times.

Gaelle Gralnek

Alie, you find the absolute BEST guests and topics -- haven't listened to this one yet, but I'm looking forward to it and know I'll learn a bunch of new information that I will feel compelled to share with my friends. Thanks for being so freaking awesome, PodDad!

noahmplant

I loove learning witch history, super cool to have someone in the community being a voice for people who never got to tell their stories, great episodes!

Ashlee Dent

This one is definitely a relistener. A lot to soak in here. What I’m taking from it right now is a reminder to “listen to nature” and I’ve been hunting for a way to get back in touch with my spiritual side. I think that can also apply in social situations when I’m feeling anxious as a reminder to tune into my body (bc I am you are of course, nature.) thank you for interviewing a delightful and fun loving human, and the laughs during both episodes were contagious!

Dylan V

Not what I expected from an episode of Ologies, but scientists need to question their assumptions, and this definitely had me doing that xD

James Nance

Loved this. Thanks for being an advocate for diversity and inclusion!

Meg Kelly

This!! I thought the same thing, it reminded of me the power in grounding ourselves. We love breath work hahahah

Margot Louis

There’s so much of this world we don’t understand. I feel scientists are often too quick to dismiss something that can’t be explained or tested with science. We develop experiments to try to test the validity of such things that seem magical and come to conclusions that it must be flimflam, because it’s existence can’t be proven with science. But I love learning about this kind of stuff! Just because it seems unexplainable doesn’t mean it’s not real. I absolutely adored Fio and loved this episode. Thank you Alie!

Manuela

Loved this series! I'm a non-practicing scientist and have been interested in Witches and Witchcraft since I was a 'wee one.' I love having the space for both things and after recently listening to the 'Dark Matter' episode, I'm 10000000% sure there's space for it all. Really, really, loved hearing from Fio. <3

Melissa Croce

Petition to get merch that says “Just a Ghost in the Dark Matter Universe” I would rock that so hard. (Anyway, loved part two just as much as part one!!)

Sarah

Despite having dabbled in the witchy world as a teenager, I’m now a staunch atheist so I was a little dubious of these episodes at first. However, upon listening I was so incredibly impressed and inspired by how you navigated this topic so respectfully, wisely and in such a well-rounded manner! I learned so much and loved these episodes as I have all Ologies episodes. You truly are a wizard, Alie <3

Mike Matteson (Inkdependence)

Alie, I was really disappointed in these episodes. Please challenge your guest when they make absolutely wild claims.

Stephanie Schmid-Falcon

I enjoyed these episodes. I’ve read a lot about witchcraft from the Witches Vs Patriarchy subreddit as well as others. You all who are scientists and who found this interesting might check out the SASS Witches subreddit as well. I consider myself an atheist but I want to point out that learning about different faiths and their practices can still be interesting, and that even people who don’t practice a religion or believe in deities probably still put faith into *some* things and believe them without proof. I used to teach Theory of Knowledge in the International Baccalaureate Program (and I was an IB student back in the day), and that particular course lists faith as a way of knowing, right alongside language, reasoning, and senses (it also lists intuition and emotion).

Shawn

These were my least favorite episodes since gemology. Still a fan though. Hope your shows going forward are actually science.

Hannah Gorrie

As a slutty asexual, I feel seen!

Britt Carp

Please ignore the negative feedback! I’m not sure why people feel entitled to decide what is and isn’t “real”. Doesn’t all scientific knowledge start out as somewhat unbelievable? I’m in strong support of more metaphysical episodes!

Tiane Scott

Not only was this seasonally appropriate, but also a fascinating lesson on !!one specific witch's!! perspective and practice, who is also well-versed in the history of witches, and in relationship with other witches as well. Not to mention they were charming and even-keeled as hell. Can't really imagine a better person for the job. It also doesn't charge ur spotify or w/e account to stop the episode or not listen altogether if it's not your vibe ❤️

Halle M.

I loved these episodes. In my lived experience, science and religion and faith not only coexist, but complement each other. Thank you for always finding the best people to interview. My own viewpoints have been diversified by listening to Ologies over the years, and I like to think I’m a bit better off because of that. ❤️

Molly Rupp

I really, really loved these episodes. A main purpose of ologies is to broaden our understanding of the world through exploring how remarkable and absolutely WILD the universe is. As much as we as humans like to think we're able to tell what's "real" and what's not, the reality is we each, in our limited, individualized understanding of the world, can never truly know the full extent of the wonders we live in each day. Episodes like this really bring that to the forefront. Learning about experiences like Fio's, especially in situations like this where it's not as popular of an opinion, is invaluable (and just downright fun and fascinating!).

Amanda Washington

These have been my favorite episodes yet! I love all things science and am also a very spiritual person, and I love the get both of these combined in my fave podcast! Fio was an amazing guest!! Also when you asked if dark matter is spirits I was thinking exactly that through the whole dark matter episode too!! Thanks for these awesome episodes!!

Hankie Mundane

Also, anyone looking for more witch history podcast… I plowed through bbc 13 part Witch series in Spotify. Lots of history, lore, and magic.

Jen Clinton

Alie is here to ask questions, not question someone's experience. These were fascinating episodes.

Mike Matteson (Inkdependence)

Sure. I'm not saying she should have come with a "You're bonkers, and I'm gonna attack you" vibe. But if someone says "I can raise power from the ocean" and "any witch can totally hex people for self defense" and "you see spirits literally all the time and you don't know it," then I'd have liked some sort of follow up like "What does it mean to 'raise power from the ocean/hex people?" or "If I see them all the time and *I* don't know it, then how do *you* know it and how can I come to know when it's happening?" If a scientist were to say that "the planet was lousy with flying leprechauns that we see all the time and don't know it," I'd expect a follow-up the same as when one says "caterpillars have two bright blue glow-in-the-dark dicks that they use while hanging upside down from branches." Both of these are wild claims that deserve a "Wait, tell me more about this" sort of response.

Guido

This episode was controversial because it was filled with wild claims. You can believe in them, or they can later be revealed to be true, but until you prove them, they remain wild claims.

Athena Tee

I appreciated the different point of view. I enjoyed the episode.

Max G

I’d say you achieved exactly what you set out to do with this episode, and I’m really glad that you did it ❤️ I listened to it as a religious studies episode and not a hard science, which others might find to be a helpful framework! For me personally, these were among some of my favorite episodes ever, and Fio was definitely one of my favorite Ologists.

Amber Uhlhorn

Thank you for these episodes. Loved both of them. The naysayers are missing out. Witches are amazing 😍

Clare Dean

Hmmm, a bit flim-flammy, sorry. I wonder if a 'Theology' episode might be a way of learning about people's spiritual beliefs and how religion affects human experience, but in a more analytical manner 🤷‍♀️

Maria Kumro

I loved this set of episodes! I'm just starting to re-explore my witch side, and spent this episode starting apple butter and making tea with herbs specific for me. Kitchen witchcraft is where I feel most at "home" and this was such a delightful listen that made me feel good about being a "normie" dipping a toe into witchcraft.

princenocturnal

I loved these episodes. I took a lot of notes for books and recommendations Fio gave. I'm a Witch practicing the Wiccan faith and I'm also queer / trans / non-binary. It was a delight to hear Fio talk about this topic. I've been stressed these past few weeks and listening to the podcast really sparked joy. To all who celebrate: Blessed Samhain. Don't forget to put up a protection spell!

Cat Baklarz

Loved these episodes and the intersectionality aspects!

Cat Baklarz

Stuff you missed in history class is also a good pod and they have a few witch/mediums history episodes!

Sriya Karra

Although my first-time question didn't quite make it (and that's totally okay, i completely understand <3), I just had to say this was one of my favorite episodes you've ever crafted! Your ability to offer fresh perspectives and deeper insights into the world is what makes life all the more bearable and undeniably beautiful. So, a heartfelt thank you for that!

Rachel Cannon

I gotta say, as a religious skeptic and naysayer of all things woo-woo, I was like "........" when I saw the title for this episode, but I was made a believer by the end. So thanks for being inclusive of ologists of all stripes.

Regina Kurandina

I think its so important to remember that science is not just empirical and measurable. These ideas really do stem from western ideologies. There's no one way of knowing and I love featuring someone who is living their own truth and had experience in a different science. Love this!!!
